My Book Collection (part 1)
So basically I started getting hooked with novels way back in sophomore year in high school, because my seat mate used to read a lot of novels particularly romantic Filipino pocketbooks during History classes (because really, that subject was boring asf). And because we were like 50+ in class (#publicschoolproblems), our teacher hardly ever notice. I wasn’t really a fan of the romance genre and because History rarely catches my interest, I decided to tag along and really she would let me borrow her pocket books even if I didn’t ask for it. And the next day she would repeatedly ask me if I liked it and we would continuously blab about it during break time.
Now when I was younger I wasn’t really into reading and I prefer watching TV over books (I’m seriously that lazy) and then out of the blue I randomly found a pocketbook while rummaging through my sister’s things, just a little bit of info about myself, I used to have a penchant of randomly checking my sister’s stuff out when I’m bored (we used to share a room) but I don’t take anything mind you, just looking through. I was like ten or eleven back then, and she saw me holding that book and she told me that it was good, the story plot did caught my interest so I shrugged and read it and surprisingly I fell deeply in-love with it that I read it over and over again.
When I reached high school, the time when I started to like novels even more, I would sometimes drop by the book store after school just to check some books and then something caught my eye, it was a compilation of many short horror stories of ordinary Filipino citizens who claim to have encountered supernatural stuff like ghosts, encantos, aswangs, etc. in one book, I picked one and bought it, and since I was a huge fan of scary stuff and I was getting tired of reading cliche love stories, I ended up collecting quite a handful of it. And that’s when I started collecting novels!
Me and Fat Glenda (by: Lila Perl)
This was the first novel I have read, this is actually my sister’s but she eventually gave it to me so it’s mine now hahaha! A story of an ordinary girl with a peculiar family (Sara Mayberry) who formed an unusual friendship with a fat girl who is bullied by everyone (Glenda Waite), it also tackles issues about fitting in, being one of the so-called “cool kids,” bullying (duh), and of course, boys and crushes. This is a perfect book for pre-teens and even adults, totally relatable characters, a very light story with an exciting twist. I doubt this book is still available in the stores, but if you can get a copy, go for it!
True Philippine Ghost Stories (published by: Viva Psicom)
I’m a huge, huge fan of horror stories so don’t be surprised if I have a lot of these. A compilation of stories taken from people who have experienced the unexplainable.
Haunted Crime Scenes (by: Sharon Naverra)
Basically the same as the TPGS, but it involves solving crimes of people who were murdered, their restless souls continue to haunt, seeking justice they are yearning for.
W.I.T.C.H. (July-August issue)
I don’t know who created this guys, let me know if you do. I love this comic series but sadly I wasn’t able to follow the story. It’s about 5 teenaged girls who were chosen by the oracle from another dimension and they were given powers…something like that.
13 (by: Ron Mendoza)
This has something to do with the classic Filipino horror genre (witchcraft) in a modern day society. One murder, thirteen people involved, but each and every one of the thirteen is dying in a way that one could not explain. One of my favs!
Dead Spot (by: Jose Paolo)
A group of friends decided to go on a vacation somewhere in Quezon Province, what they didn’t know was the danger lurking behind the shadows of what seemed to be a peaceful paradise, and their supposed to be fun vacation turned into a bloody battle between life and death.
Stupid is Forever and Stupid is Forevermore (by: Miriam Defensor-Santiago
Because MDS is my favorite senator–fierce, intelligent, superb woman! She is one of the very few politicians I admire the most. The books are filled with humor, her personal experiences in the senate, and of course, her famous pick-up lines.
Yamato Nadeshiko aka The Wallflower (by: Tomoko Hayakawa)
Anime is my personal drug, and Yamato Nadeshiko is one of my fav rom-com anime everrr! Unfortunately it’s really hard to find and collect mangas here in the province so it’s either I read manga online OR I watch the anime instead. Oh, yeah the two bishōnen boys are one of the main characters in the story. The red head is Ranmaru Mori and the black haired guy is Takenaga 😊 I wish I had the volume where the cover is Kyohei 😭by the way, when I watch anime, I prefer Japanese audio with English sub, do you guys prefer that too?
Other random books:
Delirium (by: Lauren Oliver)
Bought this a long time ago but I have only read the first chapter.
The Sorority: Samantha (by: Tamara Thorne)
Honestly speaking guys I didn’t know this was a rated PG (Parental Guidance) novel and a series as well so I only bought the third book 😂. But don’t worry guys, this is PG-16 for sensual content, and I was like 14 or 15 when I bought it hahahaha!
Bewitching (by: Alex Flinn)
A classic fairy tale with a modern twist, definitely must read.
Nightmares and Dreamscapes (by: Stephen King)
A compilation of short stories, I especially like the story of a couple who got stuck in a place where everything seemed like the 80’s.
Hip to be Square (by: Hope Lyda)
Summer Garden Murders (by: Ann Ripley)
What Happened to Lani Garver (by: Carol Plum-Ucci)
Haven’t read these three actually ✌🏻️
The Infinite (by: Douglas Clegg)
Ivy Martin wanted to bring an old empty mansion back to life, and a man who wanted to discover the mysteries that lurks behind the so-called “haunted house.” Something like that, I already forgot what the story is all about (sorry!)
The Blood Ballad (by: Rhett MacPherson)
A genealogist who made a shocking discovery about her family, and her grandpa’s connection with the Morgan Family Players. As she discovers and unveil the mystery of the past and present, family ties becomes deadlier.
This is only the first part of my book collection, as you can see, I don’t own any romance-related novels, (Yamato Nadeshiko isn’t counted since it’s a manga) because sometimes, romantic novels are either so damn predictable or too idealistic (take 50 Shades of Grey for example) that I just want to rip the book apart. Anyhoo, stay tuned for the second part of my book collection. Ciao!
