Major Discovery: BotW’s Adventure Log = Link’s Diary?!
SERIOUSLY.
(Spoiler Alert)
At this point, our beloved game Breath of the Wild has been out for around half a year already. If you have played the game, you are probably very familiar with the Adventure Log feature in BotW that helps you keep track of all your missions and side quests. Or else its pretty much impossible to remember if you were catching chickens for this guy or collecting weapons to show that kid who’s boss.
But here’s the thing- Have you ever thought about the Adventure Log’s origin? Who or what is helping Link keep track of his missions?
If your answer is the Sheikah Slate or the “system”, which is what I’ve always thought, I’m gonna go ahead and assume you own an European/American copy of the game. Because apparently, in the Japanese version of the game, there is evidence that shows that LINK is the one who wrote the adventure log to keep track of his own journey.
“Ok… So what?”
So Link wrote the Adventure Log. Big deal. It’s not like this is gonna change the gameplay in any way.
…True. However, Link didn’t JUST record his missions in the Adventure Log. According to the Japnese version, Link would often type up some of his own thoughts and comments on what he was doing aside from his current objectives. This could give us a deeper insight of Link’s character.
Here’s an example:
This is what shows up after you complete The Hero’s Sword quest. The content of the two versions are very similar, but notice the use of “自分” (myself) in pic 1. This is evidence that the adventure log is written by Link, who’s talking about himself in first person narrative, instead of “the system”. With that in mind, the Japanese version can be translated to:
(I) Finally retrieved the legendary Master Sword. (I) Don’t know if it’s just an illusion, but the sword itself seems to be delighted about this.
To this moment, Princess Zelda is still inside Hyrule Castle, fighting to suppress the Calamity.
She is still holding on to the faith in me, believing that I will definitely come for her…!
But with the power (that I have) now, can she really be saved (by myself)…?
You see what they did there?
The English version replaced every first person pronoun Link has used with “you”!
As someone who owns an American copy, and has never set the system language to Japanese, I was absolutely SHOCKED when I was told about this (credits at the end).
Remember how we could find diaries of NPCs all across Hyrule? Link’s was right under our noses this whole time!
Now that you know about this, does your adventure log seem a bit different from before?
(I) finished visiting all 13 of the locations in the old pictures. I remembered everything I’ve been through together with Princess Zelda.
In those memories (of mine), Princess Zelda always strived to complete the task burdened onto her…
Even if it’s just a moment sooner, (I) want to save her as quickly as possible
(I) want to see her smile again, with these eyes (of my own).
The translation on this one is just OFF. I can’t believe the English version completely omitted the last part, and replaced it with some kind of mission instruction.
Link has been fighting all this time to see Princess Zelda’s smile again with his own eyes.
…*sniff*
Not to mention those side quest logs. Once you realize that all of the entries were written by Link himself, the seemingly trivial information recorded in those suddenly opens up so many more hidden sides of Link. It basically re-introduced Link as someone with normal human emotions instead of the silent hero depicted throughout the game.
The caring Link, who was worried about a girl he only met twice for putting herself in danger:
…(I) ventured inside and found part of the Royal Guard’s Series, famous among equipment collectors.
When those were shown to Parcy, the traveler at the stable, her curiosity about it seem to be provoked more than ever (by me). (I) Hope she won’t do anything reckless…
The compassionate Link, who felt glad for other peoples’ happiness:
…
As a sign of appreciation for bringing the town together and as compensation for the work done (by me), a hefty amount of gems that were unearthed during the town’s construction were given by Hudson (to me).
(I) wish the couple could live happily ever after.
The reckless Link, who apparently felt thrilled when he managed to knock out some monsters with his new companion:
(I) captured the giant horse in Taobab Grasslands
So that’s why. It’s indeed a really big horse. It trampled whatever kind of monster in its way with ease when it galloped. That was really cool.
When it was brought back to Straia (by me), he was very surprised.
Link the foodie, who carefully noted down new recipes he learned along the way for future use:
(I) brought Kiana the goat butter and hearty blueshell snail required for cooking seafood paella. She shared some of the dish (with me) as thanks!
/////Recipe/////
The playful Link, who tried to mimic the way Gorons speak- by adding “goron” at the end of every sentence- after he passed the Test of Will and became one of the bros:
……
Ah… (I) kinda want to write down Kabetta’s Bro Motto, but there’s not enough space goron?
That’s too bad goron…
The empathetic Link, who felt nervous for the guy in this side quest, then relieved when the couple finally got together:
…and… THIS:
The last line on the left is the Japanese equivalent of What the heck…
I guess the statue is a bit too weird even for our great adventurer.
Finally, we have the entry that shows up after you complete the DLC trial:
(I) finally conquered the merciless Trial of the Sword.
……
(I believe that) Princess Zelda would be quite happy about how much I’ve improved
As we all know, Breath of the Wild is a game that focuses a lot on the freedom given to the players. Even the main story line is broken down into the form of memories, waiting for the players to find. As the players venture on into the wild, they would eventually find the information they need to learn about this world. The amazing amount of details you can find about Hyrule and its people is an important reason why BotW is so attractive.
On the contrary, the info available about our protagonist is very limited. The only piece of description that directly describes Link is in Zelda’s diary, where she points out that he is a very quiet person, and that’s it for our hero.
…NOT!!
Link had always had the most extensive character description. Right under our noses.
Nintendo got us. They got us GOOD.
But now we know.
SIX months after the game’s launch.
…Better late than never.
End.
P.S.: Fun fact about BotW Link- he seems to like the sand seal game a lot. Of all the entires about racing minigames, the sand seal game is the only one where Link wrote “(I’ll) try to get a better score next time!”
He’s so adorable I can’t //////

Disclaimer: I did not discover this.
This discovery was made by a Chinese gamer @atomaruU about a week ago. To make sure that her theory is correct, she cross referenced the English version of the game, only to discover that the language is completely emotionless and robotic. Therefore, to allow more people to see who Link REALLY is, I was asked to write this post based on the Chinese article she published.

(for ship asks!!) what’s your favorite canon moment of clerith? And how did you start shipping it? uwu
[Rubs tiny gremlin hands together] Let's goooo
I'll answer the second question first because I'm really gonna be screamin in the other one.
I got into clerith bc of a very good friend of mine, @marblechairs (I love you bro). Ranted at me about the ship before and after Remake came out to the point that my curiosity was piqued enough that I bought it. I wanted to play a FF game, but I was bored with FFXV at the time, so I figured, "eh, what the hell," and I fell HARD for FFVII-R. Not just for the ship, but the world and characters as a whole. The romance they're setting up is amazing, though. The TENDERNESS, the DEVOTION, the... AAAAAAAAAA
Ahem. Which brings me to the other question. Favorite canon moment.
Note: spoilers ahead for OG and Remake.
Undoubtedly the resolution scene between her and Cloud in chapter 14 of Remake. I'm aware it's an optional scene, but all three of the possible scenes (with Aerith, Tifa, or Barret) are canon, and, imho, the only one that is truly depicting any kind of developing romance-- I mean, ffs, it's the only time in the game where love is discussed.
He's talking to her in a dream because she's been taken from him. Taken from all of them, but him especially--at this point, he's the only one forming a plan in his head to get her back from Shinra. Aerith tries to keep things light and playful in their conversation so he won't worry, but that doesn't work:
C: Your mom's really worried, too.
A: Hmm? "Too"? So you're worried about me?
C: Of course I am.
With that, everything shifts. The rest of their interaction is heavy with emotion, and Aerith is unusually serious and calm where she is normally light and playful. Cloud, who is usually closed-off and just going along with what others want, asserts his own will and expresses his own feelings (more non verbally than in words, but that's how he always is), and it culminates in him declaring his intent to save her ("I'm coming for you.") and Aerith accepting this despite both of them being aware of the risks ("If that's what you want. Thank you.").
And within the scene itself, besides what I just went into detail about, there's one other moment within this moment that is my absolute FAVORITE exchange between them in the entire game.
A: I'm glad I met you, Cloud. I really am. I'm grateful for all the words we've shared. For all the moments and the memories. You've made me more happy than you know. And I'll always cherish what you've given me.
A: But... but whatever happens, you can't fall in love with me.
There's a pause in the dialogue. He looks away, with an almost guilty look on his face. At this point, Aerith reaches out to touch him, and when her hand does touch his face, he turns towards her and gasps slightly.
A: Even if you think you have... it's not real.
Another pause in the dialogue. She removes her hand from his face, and he quickly tries to grab her hand--but this is only a dream, and his fingers go right through her.
C: Do I get a say in all this?
This. This right here is the moment the stage is set for what this really is: a romance in the making. Aerith's warning might seem a little odd, but, to quote one of the devs (it was either Nomura or Nojima, i can't remember which): "If you know what happens to Aerith later in the [original] story, it's a line that strikes emotionally."
Aerith tells him he can't fall in love with her because she dies. This all but states that she knows she's going to die. Or at least believes she is. Really, at this point, it could go either way. It's a complete retelling, not just a remaster.
And Aerith is a Cetra, not a human. (Well. She's half human.) Her kind can sense the emotions of others, if her statements in the OG are anything to go by. (Her being a Cetra, not a normal human, is also why I believe it was actually her speaking to him in this scene, not his subconscious.) She's telling him not to fall in love with her, that it can't be real, to push him away. She believes she'll die, so, like any healer, she is trying to minimize the pain he'll go through, because she knows he is already starting to fall in love with her. She's trying to protect him.
This alone speaks volumes, but so do Cloud's words and actions. He immediately tries to grab her in an attempt to reciprocate her touch (something that takes a LOT longer for him to do in the resolution scene with Tifa--when she hugs him, he doesn't reciprocate for long enough that it feels painfully awkward). And then, his reply to her. He asks if he gets a say--either in the validity of his own feelings ("it's not real") or in whether he is allowed to love her ("you can't fall in love with me"). No matter which statement he's addressing with that question--it could also be both--it implies that he is, in fact, in love with her. That he's saying whatever feelings he has are real.
"Do I get a say in all this?" -> "What about what I want?"
For Cloud, this is huge. He's making his own will, his own feelings, known, when he's never really done that before-- especially not when it directly contradicts what someone just told him to do. He's arguing his own case.
Aerith doesn't answer his question, only telling him that it's "time to go". In other words, the dream is about to end, and he has to wake up.
And this is when he tells her he's coming to save her--which he ultimately does in the climax of Re. I just love this dream sequence very much because it lays bare exactly how he feels about her. It leaves loose ends for both of them, because of what this is obviously shaping up to be in future installments of the Remake--a slowburn romance.
The only real question now is, how will it all end?
Oh, and here's a clip of the scene for anyone who is interested:
And for anyone who wants to compare it to the other resolution scene I mentioned, here's Tifa's-- it gives a really good example of the whole reciprocation thing I talked about:
Anyway, thank you so much for this ask @weirdlyincarnate, and an extra thank you to anyone who actually read this essay and/or watched the clips!
ABOUT "HOLLOW"
Oh, holly chocobo... Some people are pushing too hard. They throw away something obvious and trying to find little details to pop up clues out of nothing. Some comments say that the credit song "Hollow" is about Zack, Tifa, even Sephiroth (this was a joke, right?)... This is really pointless. Please, just listen the lyrics.
In the beginning of the game, Cloud is lonely and lost for a long time. He didn't feel like he belonged to Avalance, too. The person that really pulls him into action is Aerith. After they met, he changed from a character who worked as mercenary for Avalance, to a person who trying to protect other people and planet voluntarily. So, yeah, "her smiling face guide his way". Not Zack's smiling face, Zack was planning a future for them as mercenaries, he didn't guide Cloud to a sacred way or someting, he didn't give a real purpose to Cloud. Not Tifa's smiling face, because she was not smiling (no, I'm not kidding. Or... maybe a little bit but just wait), she was trying to convince him, trying to remind him of his past and Tifa was sad, angry. Moreover, it cannot be said that her efforts have worked well in the beginning. These two characters might have saved and supported Cloud, but these are completely different things from "guide his way".
Since Aerith is a healer, I don't even want to touch on that "heal every wound" part. But if we think of it as spiritual wounds, someone who doesn't see the wounds cannot heal them. And Aerith is the only one who can see. Anyone who knows him can recognize the profound change in Cloud's character, but the only one who can understand reason of this is Aerith, thanks to her abilities.
Now, we came to the real important part. The person that Cloud calls out is lost, gone, and Cloud says, "If I had realized, would you still be with me?" (actually he says, "would you be in my embrace?" and for me, this is not a brotherly expression, anyway). This is extremely clear. This person is dead, and the Cloud blames himself. He says "I was blind to everything, I was a fool, I didn't really care anything. If I could act differently, could I change what happened?" Oh, come on. How can Cloud be responsible for Zack's death? And Tifa isn't even dead or lost, she is always there. Be reasonable!
We all know that there is a tragedy behind Aerith's smile. Apart from that, Aerith is one of the best knowers of the danger that the planet is facing. "Dark mysteries that lurking beneath her smile" is not only her tragedy, but also probable dark future of the planet. But while Aerith describes what might happen to the planet, the danger in the future; what Cloud really cared about was his own mess. He was empty, he was selfish, and he was living with a void that he had to fill in. And remember, this gap made him make a mistake that would cost Aerith's life. That's why the regret in Cloud is growing. So, Cloud wishes another chance, this time he will see the facts that upset Aerith (darkness, or Sephiroth, or Jenova, whatever you say), and he will do something, do anything, and never let her go.
And this is the most touching part: Cloud wishes another chance but he knows it's too late. Aerith is already gone. And there is nothing he can do against it, he has to "go on hollowing and hollow". And we saw that he was doing this for two years in AC.
Soooo, there is no doubt. The person called in this song is definitely Aerith. This is a lament from Cloud to Aerith.
And these beauties are from me :)
Old works, and i know that they are not really good, but anyway. I love this couple, so...
Here they are:
I wanted to talk about this moment a little bit because I’m fascinated with it and just this evening I figured out exactly why. So, this moment doesn’t happen in the original and it’s a clear allusion to this moment between Zack and Aerith in Crisis Core:
A lot of imagery associated with Cloud and Aerith from the original game was applied to Zack and Aerith in Crisis Core but this might be the only example of the river flowing in the other direction — and I’ve been thinking a lot about why that is, and what it says about the characters involved.
In Crisis Core Aerith compliments Zack on the beauty of his eyes and he invites her to look into them — it’s a teasing, flirtatious moment between them. In the Remake Cloud dissociates as Aerith is saying Zack’s name and Aerith leans over to ask if he’s okay, which results in her looking into his eyes and then she compliments the beauty of them. His reaction could not be further from Zack’s. He breaks eye contact and brushes the compliment off, and she is clearly sad and disappointed.
What’s fascinating about the inclusion of this moment in the Remake is that the game has chosen to depict the exact moment that Aerith realises that Cloud and Zack are in fact nothing alike — and from which point her attraction to him can no longer be attributed only to his similarity to Zack. We know from the original game that part of what drew Aerith to Cloud when they first met was that they looked alike and that he had similar mannerisms to Zack, but she was confronted with the fact that Cloud is not really like Zack at all.
Aerith: …first off, it bothered me how you looked exactly alike. Two completely different people, but look exactly the same. The way you walk, gesture… I think I must have seen him again, in you… But you’re different. Things are different.
So, in the Remake we have Aerith — who would not have forgotten this moment with Zack on their first date — consciously choosing to recreate this moment with Cloud. It could be that she recalled a flirting method that worked on her and decided to try it on Cloud but I don’t think this is it because Aerith is skilled at flirting as shown in their interactions in Sector 5 and also because she and Cloud had just been discussing Zack. I think that there is some validity to the idea that maybe she saw Cloud as someone she could play pretend with and try to recapture some of the experience of her first love — and he reacted in a way which showed that to be impossible. It may even be that Aerith has dated other SOLDIERs since Zack for this reason and used this line with some success before.
Either way, from this point it’s no longer possible to read her continued attraction to him as projection of her feelings for Zack or desire to ‘recapture’ her relationship with Zack. She knows that he and Zack are very different people. And if we are to read the Remake as a clarification of the intent of the original game (which I don’t actually think is valid) then back-applying this moment to the original game means that for the overwhelming majority of it Aerith’s romantic overtures towards Cloud had nothing to do with her feelings for Zack.

Maybe I should just give up. Honestly, it’s what I do best. Could’ve fooled me.
Hollow: an ode to Cloud’s regrets about Aerith
I’ve always felt Hollow is about Cloud’s regrets after Aerith’s fate. But after finishing the Original Final Fantasy 7 game, I realized the lyrics outright quote and reference things Cloud says about Aerith in Disks 2 & 3.
So if I was convinced before, now I just can’t see the song being about anyone nor anything else.
I’ve been posting my thoughts about it on Twitter the last few days, but I figured it was worth putting everything together in one single post to illustrate just why I feel this way. I’ll divide the post in a few parts:
What we know about the song
Where we hear the song in Remake
The name of the song
The song lyrics and its ties to the OG (and to AC)
Could the song be about multiple people? nope
I’ll illustrate each point with images from the OG and occasionally Advent Children, so beware of spoilers for both! In contrast, there are only a few spoilers from Remake, including one cut-scene from the ending and a scene from Chapter 14.
