Old Ricstar Fic Link Archive

I put up a link archive that sources to any ricstar fic not actively posted to AO3 or FFN! There's currently 90+ fics on it. These are majority fics posted from the 90s to the late 2000s on LiveJournal or X-Men Fanfic sites that are now gone. It can be found at ricshatty.neocities.org.

At the moment I've organized things by author name, but I intend to add the option to browse via fic rating (Teen, Mature, etc) in the future. It's also mobile friendly! Well, up until you get taken to wherever the fic was archived, I can't guarantee what that place looks like.

Please let me know if you find any errors, this was my first time coding something.

So now that you have read a AoA ricstar story. What are your thoughts on being able to try something similar or just the concept itself?

Although I thought the author translated Shatterstar super well, I still have 0 interest in coming up with my own idea to integrate Shatterstar. Could this change in the future? Sure. But at the moment I have no motivation for it. I do have wips that involve the AoA universe, but Shatterstar would not originate from there. Just not interested in it right now! I have too many ideas already solidly formed floating by for me to spend time fleshing out another one I don't need at the moment.

But rest assured if you are interested in seeing something involving AoA and ricstar, I've got something cooking. Slowly. Right now, aside from no matter the version, the longfic I'm working on is actually apocaric. I'd considered posting a lot of chapter 1's at once to about... 6 fics. And then letting readers say which they wanted finished first. But eh, im in the mood to post an actual long apocaric fic first. We'll see if that changes as i write.

I take back all my badmouthing of the possibility of getting shatterstar translated into the AoA universe. Just found a fic that had done it, and I'm thoroughly impressed.

completely rehauled the fanfiction tab of the ricstar website so now it matches the rest of the site! It's a liiitle wonky on mobile, but I chose ease of reading the table over squishing everything together. Should still fit most screens as long as you scroll to the side.

You can also now sort things (alphabetically) by clicking the headers! I'll have to admit I really can't do more than that, I'm horrible at javascript. If anyone better at coding than me presents me with the script for option sorting, I'd love you forever.

That's my last big update for a while. The other behemoth is going through every rictor and shatterstar comic by hand and, essentially, writing the most in-depth wiki you can find for the character bios pages. As you can image that's months worth of work, and I would like to keep at my other hobbies xD who knows when that'll be done.

Btw if I ever talk about fic ideas here, even if I say im not super interested in writing it theres like a 99% chance its on my wip list and I've still written a bit to it anyways. I just have, uh, 68 wips and would rather focus on getting one done at a time rather than just have a bunch of fics with only 1 chapter posted but then unfinished for years.

So that is to say, if you see me talking about an idea down to the planned plot/worldbuilding details that go into it, and you want to write the same idea even with all those little details I brought up, that's fine. Free game! Id personally like it if we talked about it beforehand because it'd be fun to bounce things back and forth, but fanfic is transformative and I own nothing. I mean, how many "depressing ricstar mexico roadtrip" fics are already out there? Just wanted to say Im chill with that.

However, please ask if you're going to post a request to the kinkmeme for other writers to write things Ive talked about down to the nitty-gritty details. That hurts. It feels like a "well you just weren't writing this fast enough so your planning should go to someone else." Itd be different if it was just the same trope/general ideas but all the same details I've spoken about here too is... ouch. Please please don't do that, especially since I had actually been working on that fic idea despite my "maybe, maybe not" for writing it.

Half-Yearly Fic Round-Up

Its been about 6 months since I've done one of these! Wow. Time to start again. I will be excluding my black phone fics since I'm not really into it anymore/was ever a black phone fan account.

face the music - ricstar, 10k words, mature. Shatterstar learns Rictor is alive while he's trapped in the Mojoverse.

I've posted a total of 81,390 words summarized in this post! Technically 86,905 if you count a ricstar fic I published then took down. I've certainly written a lot more than that in my unposted wips and if you add in the black phone fic (about 200k). Trust me, I have a lot more rictor and/or shatterstar fics to come in the future (about 50 fics worth if I count them all!). Thank you to the ones that read and comment as always, makes me feel loved in our small corner.

For anyone who has a Rictor and/or Shatterstar-based art or writing idea, but just can't do either of those things, I started an anonymous ricstar kink meme!

Anyone is free to submit or fill prompts. It's titled ricstar but it accepts prompts for any ship or general idea as long as it involves Rictor or Shatterstar. It also accepts both SFW and NSFW prompts. I'll get this added to the ricstar website in the upcoming update.

Hopefully there will be at least a couple prompts and fills submitted over the coming months!

Some theories on how evil ricstar could work in AoA or raised by strife.

A friend had told me that she doesn’t think ric biggest issue would be his struggles with his own family and sexuality would be an issue bc in both scenarios his family would be dead or he was taken from them at a young age. Also bc no one would care about him being gay bc those under control of either would focus on staying on top or becoming stronger bc of the whole survival of the fittest and might makes right. In AoA ric was devoted to AoA apocalypse not bc he wanted power but bc he wanted to acknowledgment. See I think deep down evil ric would be so starved for affection and love but that attitude would be seen as weakness in AoA. In strife au, he would be similar as well feeling some kind of loyalty bc the man claimed to have saved him and is helping get his revenge against cable. But ric would still have his hang ups bc there no trauma of his father death and strife twisted methods may make him feel immense guilt and shame and he has no one to talk to about this bc there mlf are just as twisted and May backstabbed him. Then there’s Star, you remember Star was basically a robot with very little social cues and closes emotion he had was battlelust and rage. But he was also desperate for help and would be willing to work with anybody who could provide him with it. Strife/ apocalypse would offer their help bc they want his skill and strength not to mention they have no qualms to killing plus mojoverse tech and magic would be too tempting to ignore. Star would be disgusted but willing to go along bc he needs their help. I think his interactions would go the same way they did in the original. Being that Star would not get along with anyone at first but find his way to gravitate towards rictor bc he seems like he doesn’t want anything from him and he is attractive to his appearance. Rictor would be on his guard bc he wouldn’t understand why this alien wants to be around him until he realizes, wow he actually listens to me and wants my opinion. Wow he actually learn my language to communicate better with me. Ric being starve for love would appreciate Star efforts and may even be more receptive and welcoming towards his clumsy advances especially if he know they are genuine. Star would also develop emotions other than rage slowly and as they get closer. Star become more supportive and even may start to see holes in strife story or AoA apocalypse methods. This would prompt him to advise ric that they are on the wrong side and may need to leave. Ric would be torn bc this guy is his only friend and someone he is developing feelings for but due old loyalty he doesn’t want to leave just yet. Ultimately it may come down to the truth coming out about his father’s death or a very violent rejection from apocalypse to change his mind. Similar to what happen in the comic when krakoa announced it was leaving earth. Bc remember this version of ric is love starve so a harsh rejection may be what snaps him out of it.

I usually operate on the assumption that even when raised in a different circumstances, Rictor is still a teenager in the 80s-90s. Him being raised by Stryfe rather than the Richters wouldn't negate the machismo of his background (in fact, I think it'd be just as prevalent under Stryfe who always has something to prove). Plus, he'd still have his most formative years with the Richters in this scenario. I think he'd still be closeted in some ways. The MLF also aren't... a purely evil group. Just look at Tempo and Dani! I hesitate to say they're all friends, but we see it mentioned one member of the groups make their grocery lists and rents videos for them! They're X-Force but misguided. I do think Julio would bottle things up, but he already bottles them up with X-Force. I don't think it'd be much different, all things considered. Different surrounding characters, same internal conflicts for Julio. Well, not all the conflicts, but some. I am interested in the idea of Julio and Star being on the MLF together, but at the moment I'm more interested in writing about just Star on the MLF first (and therefore Julio is his rival on X-Force lol).

Regarding Star on the MLF though, I agree with you that he would sooner or later would come into conflict with Stryfe's methods. But its also important to note that he dislikes turncoats. It'd definitely be a major moral conflict for Shatterstar to decide to leave the team or not. Conversely, the problem with Star in an AoA scenario is it's almost impossible to put him in that setting and not have him immediately aware of the slavery and the subhuman way non-mutants are treated by Apocalypse. It's so wrapped into the worldbuilding of that universe you simply cannot keep Shatterstar obtuse to it -- and if there's one thing Shatterstar can identify, its social injustices and slavery, the things he was just fighting in Mojoworld. An older Shatterstar forgets these things when he's on an Earth without them for too long as we see in an X-Force annual, but that kind of long-term normalcy can't be achieved in an AoA setting. He simply would not, in any scenario, last in serving Apocalypse for more than a day unless the plot gets increasingly wacky to hide it all from him (which makes no sense). Star can have odd morals at times, but he absolutely does not stand for class differences that combine with slavery and human experimentation.

I'd be interested to see if someone did try to write Star into AoA, but its just so hard for me to see how it could be feasible in a way that isnt wildly out of character. And if you do write him like that, while Rictor's AoA counterpart is also pretty "ooc" compared to his 616 self (I do see similarities -- like you said, he wants recognition so bad in AoA, it just drives him to do bad things. At times even in 616... we've almost seen it happen for the same reason like with Quicksilver), then you've just got 2 guys with Ric and Stars names and not much connection to their real characterizations. Just wouldn't be for me.

Y’know I had looked but there is no AoA Shatterstar or Longshot counterpart? So that means either they are dead, don’t exist or marvel did create them but never bothered to show them. Part of me would like to see what an evil AoA ricstar would look like. I know you had said about making an evil ricstar wip for the future where Star or Rictor were evil or on bad guys team. but I’m curious how that would work out if both rictor and Star were evil and on the same side.

The reason why Longshot and Shatterstar aren't present during AoA is because there are no variants of Mojoverse characters. It is a pocket universe relative to all others -- there can't be variants. I know since the 2000s there has been alt universes where Shatterstar and Longshot have appeared in, but it's because writers forgot about this rule. Freshly created in 1991 though, writers wouldn't have been so quick to forget that rule for Shatterstar by the time AoA was ongoing.

I think I've mentioned before the idea of writing Shatterstar ending up in AoA, but given how Shatterstar was raised in the Mojoverse, I couldn't see him ever ascribing to Apocalypse's survival of the fittest ideal. It contrasts with his core moral standings too much, and if you remove that + his Mojoworld background, you lose a lot of what makes Shatterstar Shatterstar. There's no room for translation either to explain why he wouldn't be opposed to Apocalypse. With a lot of 'reverse' AUs, I'm pretty critical about the surroundings that have caused said character to be reversed, and in this instance I can't understand how at all Shatterstar would end up evil in this instance unless you remove his Mojoverse background. You do that, then you run into a major problem of Dazzler being a player in that universe, so how do you explain his existence? Much less him being evil? Maybe I'm being too nitty-gritty, but I think it'll create a plot hole too large if you don't flesh out all these questions.

Besides, I think what makes Shatterstar interesting is he, at the end of the day, has always been morally gray. He's compelling as a hero because of his lack of care of life, but he could easily end up as a villain if he's promised the right things. Yet, as a villain, he'd likely end up like AoA Cyclops and generally end up on the 'good' side at the end. If you just make him pure evil... well, that's not Shatterstar. That's some other guy with his face and name. The fun of AUs is seeing how you translate a character's canon components to a different situation. "What does it take for a character to get to this point." And sometimes... the answer is "this cannot be done to get the character here." That's how I feel about an AoA Shatterstar.

Rictor gets leeway because he already has a canon AoA counterpart. I'd also have difficulty understanding why he'd be pro-Apocalypse in that universe if it wasn't for him canonically being a supporter. We don't have an exact 'why', but extrapolating from his extreme fear of being a mutant in 80s X-Factor, I could see how he gets molded differently. I guess. I dunno, he is very "that is not Rictor" in AoA aside from how brash and cocky he is. Par for the course, Dani is equally as unrecognizable in that universe. Gotta make do with what is 'canon' there.

Anyways all this to say I don't think I'd ever write a fic in general where they're both 'evil' or villainous in some way. It takes away too much of the drama lol. Not unless I get struck by a sudden best idea ever that jumps through all the hurdles I've set up.

Nevermind as I typed all that I had the idea of Stryfe taking young Rictor after he kills his father, and Rictor gets raised as a part of the MLF. Then Stryfe finds Star before Cable and he ends up on the MLF too... make it a "ricstar slowly gets together" xforce fic but for some reason they're on the MLF? Though my point still stands about Shatterstar: I think he'd eventually defect to X-Force if he sees Stryfe do one too many things he doesn't agree with. Probably leave with Tempo. So not a true "they're both villains" story. Might see if the idea grows on me.

Apocaric writer here: I went on a tear tonight and got over 2k written in my drafts, I'm trying to get at least one chapter sort of done so it can get posted soon-ish. Reporting to you as you're the only other person I can squee with over them. This one will be a bit of a pisser as it's not told in strictly chronological order. Tbh it's also shaping up to be RicStar endgame.

Omg i love to yap about them you are welcome in my inbox or dms whenever. And #trust i will be seated and waiting for that chapter. I loooove a bit of a confusing and angsty story so whatever you have prepared i will fully enjoy. But I cheer on your writing no matter the kind!!!

I feel so bad i haven't been able to deliver on my apocaric promise myself, every time I sit down to work on my one wip I have in mind I get distracted with something else (oops). And then on one of my bigger ideas I have, I've hit a writing plan wall and im like man... plus that story will take forever to get posted anyways due to me pre-writing most all of my work nowadays, even the super long chaptered stuff. hello i was wondering if you had a scan/picture of shatterstars character profile from the marvel ttrpg youve mentioned it a couple times and i havent been able to find a scan of the whole page anywhere for free. im on a quest for anything shatterstar-related that ive missed :P

Oh yeah here you go! Hope this pic is fine, I have really bad overhead lighting in my apartment.

Funnily enough he's one of the strongest characters in the entire book at rank 5. Stronger than rictor too. It cracks me up a little. It doesn't reflect canon super accurately though, as you can probably tell by it simply labeling him as gay and also shatterstars mutant status is debatable depending on the book he's in. And the whole "he and rictor joined Excalibur [together]".

The "weird" label never fails to make me crack up though.

Yep here's ric's! Kind of love they didnt make him completely earth-based and made half his kit "sound" (which is just vibrations). And they even gave him iron will which lines up with his anti-telepathy shtick.

The 0 mentions of his depression is weird through, you'd think they'd mention that, much less say how suicide-prone he is. But it is what it is.

That idea of 616 rictor and age of apocalypse rictor swapping places is sticking in my mind so much... I can make it apocaric AND ricstar flavored at the same time... I think i might make it my next longfic to work on
