It’s every man for himself.
Is it wrong that I'm terrified?
What’d you say, sorry?
What? Nothing. I said nothing. Just talking to myself.
Trust no one.
After months and months of cold and darkness, it was finally something verging on warm. Much like the animals that were slowly reemerging from their winter hiding places, something inside Ginny was waking up again. It was perfect walking weather, the kind of day where you left your coat inside just because you could, and basked in the warmth of the sun’s rays. She was taking advantage of it; meandering through the park.
She wasn’t thinking about much in particular, just how nice out it was, and how much she needed to find a new book to read, and how she really needed to reshelve the biography section because some schoolkids had totally trashed it. But then she saw someone under a large tree, a dark-haired boy Ginny recognized but didn’t know particularly well. He was reading Agatha Christie, and excellent choice, and… talking to the book? She bit back a laugh. “I thought I was the only one who did that.”
Isaac's attention was snapped away from his book and onto a girl standing in front of him. He immediately recognized her by her flaming red hair, which appeared even more brilliant in the light of the shining sun. She was the librarian, of course. Isaac had only talked to her on a few occasions, and each time he had made a fool of himself, but that was only average for him. He stared at her for a minute, looking quite unsure. Surely she wasn't talking to him, was she? He turned and looked to the right, thinking that perhaps she was talking to someone who had been beside him without his knowing. When he saw no one, he looked to the left. Sure enough, there was no one there either. He began to come to terms with the fact that Ginny was, in fact, speaking to him; something he would've never expected in a million years. But even after this fact became known, he was still unsure as to what exactly she was talking about. "The- the only one who...?" At first, Isaac's expression was riddled with confusion. However, the confusion soon cleared as it dawned on him that he must've been speaking his thoughts aloud. His eyes grew wide, and his mouth dropped open ever-so-slightly. "Wait, I wasn't... I wasn't saying that out loud, was I?" He asked despite the fact that he was already nearly positive of the answer. He would've been mortified, had Ginny not already admitted that she did the same thing. Even so, he was still quite embarrassed. It was a bad habit of his, and he usually never noticed it when it happened.
He’d only gone to take a brisk walk in the sunshine, clear his head after Rosemary had clouded his mind. Did he regret walking out on her, or was it just his baby he cared about, he couldn’t seem to figure out which? He was hoping that the scenery might take his mind elsewhere. He was right. He was minding his own business, getting a little lost in his burden-filled head when he heard the young boy muttering to himself underneath a large oak tree. He stood and stared at him, his lips sucked in as he suppressed the urge to laugh at the boy outright. He was happy for the escape, however childish his distraction might have been. He should have turned as after the first moment, instead of savoring the break, because the next thing he knew the boy was looking up at him. Staring at him with same quizzical glare Henry had been giving him.
Upon seeing the older boy, Isaac's expression quickly turned from thoughtful to confused. As far as he knew, his commentary had only been spoken inside his head, and it was unusual to him that someone would stop and look at him in this way when all he had been doing was reading. The silence that followed the initial eye contact between the two boys was simply unbearably awkward for Isaac, and so he took that moment to speak. "Hello there. Uh, is something the matter?" Of course, after saying his words, he came to realize that he had only increased the awkward feeling in the air. He quickly attempted to recover, however recovery wasn't really his forte. "I mean, is there a reason that you stopped here? Because, you know, I don't really know you- at least, I don't think I do- and there must be a reason for your stopping, right? People don't usually just stand in front of other people for no reason. Unless that's what's actually happening here, which is definitely possible, but a bit unlikely... Did I do something odd? Sometimes, when I'm reading, I'm so concentrated on the book that I make weird faces and things. It's usually involuntary, but it happens. At least, I've been told it happens. I've never really experienced it myself, because I'm usually too caught up in the book to even think about that kind of thing. You know?" Isaac blabbered on and on, the way he usually did in situations such as these. He found it necessary to fill silences, even if he was making the situation worse in doing so, and he typically found his words becoming more and more irrelevant as he droned on.
There was something about warm weather that was irresistible to Isaac. It had been that way for as long as he could remember. The warmth from the radiating sun always had a way of beckoning him outside, into the pleasant breeze that smelled distinctively of wildflowers and freshly-mowed grass; a smell he could only associate with Spring. On that particular delightful day, Isaac could be found under the shade of a large tree, basking in the feelings of new life all around him. His hands held the cracked spine of a worn paperback, his copy of Murder on the Orient Express. Thin, nimble fingers flipped the crisp dogeared pages as he read, his thick-rimmed glasses hiding his eyes as they flicked back and forth across the black ink. A thoughtful expression settled on his face, and he began to unknowingly murmur aloud his thoughts as he read, addressing characters in the book as if they were actually there. "I don't suppose I'd like Mr. Ratchett's face either, Poirot, but you mustn't be so rude." He chided, though his commentary was lost on the fictional characters as they continued on the way they always did.
Fair enough. Don’t worry, I’ll never accuse you of drooling again.
I love Spiderman. I’ve always been a big Marvel fan. Tell me: are you an MJ or Gwen Stacy kind of guy? And yes I’ll be judging you for your answer.
I assure you, it's much appreciated.
Oh, great. I was afraid you were going to say you preferred DC to Marvel, which would mean we can't be friends. I'm gonna have to go with Gwen. Mostly because she was the first, and I feel like she and Peter had a better connection than he does with MJ. What do you think?
I think you’re a guy I just caught drooling on the front desk. But don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.
Hey, I wasn't drooling! I might be gross, but I'm not that gross. Snoring, sure, but never drooling.
Oh, thanks. For that, you get a free comic. I'd recommend some Spiderman, you seem like a Spiderman type of girl.
Do you always sleep on the job?
Psh, what? Never. Of course not. That's really unprofessional. Who do you think I am?
I’d imagine any store would have a thriving business if they sold drugs.
…Ohh, right. I must’ve missed the turning… Thanks, man. But, um, hmmm… Do you have any copies of Deadpool or The Winter Soldier?
I'd assume so. Except maybe a rehab facility.
It's no problem. Lost people always seem to wander in here. I'm sorta used to it. Ooh, excellent choices. We have both of them around here somewhere. Are you looking for any particular issues?
C-Comics? Oh, this isn’t the pharmaceutical?
No, no it's not. Though I'm sure we'd get a hell of a lot more business if we sold drugs. The place you're looking for is a little ways down the road.
Oh! No, no, I’m good. Just browsing… you can erm— you can go back to sleep. I won’t steal anything, I promise.
Sleep? I wasn't sleeping. I was, uh, resting my head. And simultaneously closing my eyes. Not sleep, because I'm working, and obviously that would be irresponsible. Oh, you won't steal anything? That sounds like something a thief would say. How do I know you aren't a thief?
Wha-? Oh! Uh, welcome to San's Comics! Can I help you find something?
Isaac Flinn is 23 years old, and works as a comic book store owner.
well i could be angry, but you’re not worth the fight
Ever since he was young, Isaac has been a bit too nerdy for his own good. It started with his mother, an unpublished novelist, who had made the decision to substitute the usual nursery rhymes with stories from Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and the like. Growing up like this was sure to give Isaac a love for all things intelligent, turning him into one of the dorkiest kids to ever grace the town. And, as everyone knows, dorky is synonymous with uncool. This means poor Isaac had to endure quite a few bullies in his time.
Not that he really cared, though. To him, the bullies were just ignorant kids who weren’t worth his energy. Anyone with half a brain wouldn’t waste their time on teasing other kids, simply because they enjoyed reading comic books and staying up late watching Clue. Isaac simply ignored the bullies, hiding his face in his mysteries and his comics and forgetting about their harmless insults while being whisked away to the worlds of all his favorite fictional friends.
Isaac’s fictional friends didn’t just attract tormentors, though. They had a far bigger impact on him. Whether it be his comics, his novels, or even his favorite television shows- he noticed a bit of a pattern with them. In all of them, the main character was a hero, someone who made the world a better place. And that is exactly what Isaac wanted to do. He always dreamed of being a police man. He wanted to help others. He wanted to be the character in the story book that kids like him would stay up until 3 in the morning with a flashlight under the bedsheets reading about. He just didn’t have enough confidence in himself to make these dreams come true.
He dismissed himself, saying he was far too thin and lanky to do police work, or he wasn’t smart enough to solve the cases. In truth, he was just afraid. Fear has a way of getting in the way of things. So, instead, Isaac opened up his own comic book store. He loves his store, and everything about it; from the way it smells, to the way the nerdy kids take refuge in it. He hopes more than anything that the books he sells there will inspire someone to be something great. Something that he could never be.

soul mate:
Virginia Waters: Isaac has met the redhead on a few occasions while at the library where she works. He usually goes there with the intention of finding new murder mysteries to read, but he gets so nervous in her presence that he ends up asking for something he’s read so many times he knows it by heart. He doesn’t know about their connection, but he knows she’s a gorgeous girl, and that’s enough to scare him into a stuttering mess.
relationships:
Benjamin White: Isaac would definitely consider Ben one of his better friends. Mostly that means he comes into Isaac’s comic book store sometimes and they get into heated discussion about fictional characters, but, hey, a friend’s a friend, regardless of how unconventional the friendship might be.
Oliver Williams: Oliver was the cool kid. Despite being younger, and shorter, and probably significantly dumber than Isaac, he made it a personal goal during their school years to make Isaac’s life as miserable as possible. He tries to avoid Oliver now, but it’s a small town.
Isaac's fc is Dylan O'Brien and he is unavailable.
