Kiyoi's aversion to acknowledge Hira as a friend
or Kiyoi vs. the word '友達'
Introduction and UtsuKare Translations Master Post
Some of you might recognize me as that Russian translator of Utsukushii Kare books from Wattpad. I decided to revive my tumblr to compile all the links and explanations here for those of you, My Beautiful Man fans, who can't wait for official English releases of the books.
I could never keep a blog, so for now here I'll just tell how it all came about, and you can find links to all my MBM translations at the end (feel free to just skip the wall of text).

!!! SPOILERS FOR EP 5 OF UTSUKUSHII KARE !!!!

SO. This scene.
I think we all can agree that it’s heartbreaking, and I suspect most people who’ve consumed Japanese media are familiar with how final the word “sayōnara” is in Japanese.
But there’s an extra dimension to it if you’ve read the book.
At one point reasonably early into the university year - before meeting Kiyoi again - Koyama and Hira are in the Photography Club’s room with the other members of the club.
Koyama just talked Hira into having dinner together because of the vegetables his parents sent him (bonus info: Koyama’s parents are farmers, and in the book Koyama lives on his own, not with his brother. He invites Hira over to his place, not Hira’s). The commercial with Kiyoi is shown in the TV in the club, and Koyama recognizes Kiyoi. They’ve already had the conversation about a beautiful person whom Hira had taken photos of, even if Koyama still doesn’t know the name. He knows his face though: It turns out Kiyoi usually works with Koyama’s brother, and Koyama has a free magazine with Kiyoi’s face and name in it listed as an “actor”:
—————
“On the page is Kiyoi’s picture and name with the word “actor” listed next to it.
Wow. Koyama’s right.
While Hira was celebrating the tiny victory of making friends for the first time, Kiyoi has already gone even farther ahead.
The feeling in Hira’s chest is the same as it was back in high school.
Commercials and magazines.
Even though Hira really tried to avoid seeing Kiyoi, this happens. The feelings well up and out of Hira like drops of water from a tilted bottle.
,,You can have it.”
Hira lifts his head in surprise: ,,I can’t. It’s your brother’s, isn’t it?”
,,It’s just a free magazine. And anyway, you really seem to like this Kiyoi guy.”
Koyama laughs teasingly. Somehow it’s really hard to tell him that Kiyoi is that person.
Instead Hira brushes it off with a vague denial, and they’re interrupted by another first year: ,,Guys, we’re going out for a barbecue. Are you coming?”
,,Ah, no, we’re having vegetable teppanyaki,” Koyama answers, and the others grumble something about herbivores.
,,Okay, just remember to lock up then.”
,,Sure, we will, see you,” Koyama and Hira wave at the others. ,,Farewell,” Hira says.
After the others leave, Koyama turns his head to Hira and catches his eyes.
,,What?”
,,I noticed it before as well, but you have a funny way of saying bye. Usually people don’t really say “farewell”, do they? Normally it’s “bye” or “see you”, right? But you never say that.”
Koyama asks if he has something against the words, and the memory of Kiyoi forces itself onto Hira’s mind.
,,Well, see you.”
The cold words that felt like Hira was being thrown away, and the kiss that felt like a knife to his chest, telling him it’s over.
The memory hurt enough that maybe Hira had just subconsciously been avoiding those words.
,,I don’t have a reason per say, but “bye” and “see you” feel too final and too sad.”
Koyama looks puzzled at the way Hira makes it sound like he’s simply stating a common fact.
,,If you ask me, I think “farewell” sounds a lot sadder, though,” Koyama says. ,,”Bye” and “See you” are just short versions of “see you tomorrow” or “see you later”. Those mean that we’ll definitely see one another again.”
————
Knowing how the writers of the show have taken a lot of the important lines directly (word by word) from the book, I couldn’t help but think about this when I watched this scene :C
Tl;dr: Koyama’s choice of words makes it very clear that the friendship is over.
I’m glad they remained friends! Also, I feel like in the show Koyama and Hira really are just close friends with Koyama having a crush but in the translated novels there was more to their relationship: “Before, he and Koyama had been more than friends but not quite boyfriends. Kiyoi's existence had kept them from dating properly.”
Hira really could have ended up with Koyama which is kind of sad because Kiyoi on the other hand never got close to anyone like this and even states through the first two novels how he could never be with anyone but Hira. He even says in the warehouse fiasco when he thinks Hira has been stabbed how, “I'll share you with someone else, so just stay by my side.”
There was a cut out scene in the original script that takes from these lines in the novel where Kiyoi tells Hira he doesn’t have to understand him/he doesn’t have to understand Hira and he doesn’t care if Hira doesn’t want to take his photo anymore/wants to take someone else’s photo.
This really highlights how Hira is the one with the power in their relationship and part of that power is that he could have moved on from Kiyoi but I don’t think Kiyoi could have done the same or it would have taken him an eternity to do so.
Kiyoi and Koyama: SMASH App Bonus Clip [ENG SUB]
I got three requests to sub this today alone, so here you are😂
Translator's note below because I chose to localize part of their conversation.
TRANSLATORS NOTE UNDER THE CUT
I think this might very well have been when Koyama finds out about them living together because in the first episode of Season 2 he asks Hira if he is able to see Kiyoi since he’s so busy. Also I’ve never seen anyone point this out in my deep dive into this fandom but the sly look on Hira’s face when Koyama asks him this is 100% Hira thinking about the night before when Kiyoi was being “cute.”
I love the interactions between these two and wish we had gotten more because it really does show how Kiyoi is just as insecure in his relationship with Hira as Hira is with him or else Hira’s continued interactions with Koyama wouldn’t bother him as much as they do. He even gets all pouty when he finds out Koyama is helping Hira find a job. Plus, Koyama messing with Kiyoi is hilarious. I think eventually these two could be friends…that’s a long eventually though.

gagaoolala subs (official) versus mine (fan)
Neither is more or less correct than the other.
(except for my broken English but that’s not the point)
Yes, they are completely different.
But they are both correct. How, you ask?
Well, hello and welcome to a long-ass rant about why I think it’s important to give a shit as a translator.
DISCLAIMER: I’m not native English speaker, I’m not a professional subtitler (technically), and my subtitles are FAR from perfect. In some instances, Gagaoolala serves better quality translations when we’re talking in terms of delivering a meaning from one language to another. I could write a whole ass essay on this as it is a matter of translation theories.
With that being said,
1. I think part of the reason our subtitles are wildly different is that Gagaoolala obviously gives their translators the script without the actual video and audio.
How do I know?
This ^^^
If the translator had been listening to the audio, they would never have gotten Hira’s name wrong - but Hira’s name can be read as “Taira” (Google suggests Taira Kaima the baseball player as an example), so if you were to just read the script you would have no way of knowing the pronunciation used in the show.
This would also probably be why they can release English subs so fast while I take days to finish mine.
2. The major reason I am adding my subtitles to this series is that I love the imagery Hira uses when he speaks and how some of his best lines are taken directly from the novel. Obviously this makes me want to keep as close to the original wording and imagery as possible - but if you read the above scene about Kiyoi’s influence on Hira, I honestly think Gagaoolala’s subs make it much easier to understand what Hira is actually saying.
However, IMO it takes away from his character.
The dirty stream he’s talking about is referencing back to the rubber duck from episode 1:
Novel version-Hira refers back to Captain Duck a lot by saying things like “I must be like the curly lashed Captain Duck floating along the dirty manmade river” to tell himself to calm down enough to be able to talk without stammering.
You don’t need to know all this to watch the series, and if you haven’t read the book, you probably wouldn’t know at all - and I don’t think Gagaoolala’s translator has. I have though, and I think these images and sentences are a vital part of showing who Hira is and adds a lot of depth to his character. Especially because the series is mostly carried by his monologues. That’s why, even if it’s probably harder to understand, I want my subtitles to be closer to the original Japanese.
Like this scene from episode 4. My translation (right) is translating exactly what he says, but if you get the image, you can’t really say that Gagaoolala’s translations are wrong… I may just be a sappy simp, but I’m a sucker for stuff like this and was sad to see it gone.
The image Hira paints of Koyama becomes much more vivid and warm than Gagaoolala’s subs make them out to be. According to Gagaoolala, he’s just a nice guy, right? And the way Hira sees people is different from how most see them, so I think the description is important to keep.
It’s like when your teacher asks you to read a book and write a paper on it. Gagaoolala’s the student who analyzed and rephrased but didn’t like the book. I’m the kid who was sobbing at 1AM and made my paper 10 pages longer than it had to be just because it’s such a good book.
I hope that if you watch the show using my subtitles, you’ll love it just as much as me.
TL;DR: GagaOOlala didn’t translate wrong, they just don’t care about the story as much as I do.
Your translations are why I fell in love with their story. It gave both characters especially Hira so much more complexity. Thank you for your beautiful translations.
No pressure—I feel like you’ve been getting some kind of pressure-y asks and I definitely don’t want to be one of those people—but if you have the time and inclination, could you translate the episode summary for Utsukushii Kare season 2 episode 4 given here? I know there are tons of things like this you could translate but I feel like with the amount of suspense folks are in after episode 3 this would be maybe the most helpful thing possible. I can’t be the only person who’s a bit freaked out about what’ll happen next, right?

Hi <3 Thank you for the nice ask! I really enjoy the asks, and usually I blame language barriers if some things come off a certain way, so I hope it doesn't discourage people from reaching out to me.
Here's the translation!!
Summary of the last episode: Kiyoi just wants to be in a regular relationship, but finds himself unable to communicate his feelings to Hira, who lives in his own special world. Hurt by Hira's insensitive words, Kiyoi initially thought that breaking up was for the better... and yet he finds himself back in Hira's house. And then the both of them receive an invitation to a High school reunion. Everyone meets for the first time in a long while. The narrow world of high school is slightly changed, and Shirota brings with him a surprising announcement. At the same time, Hira has lost both the photography competition and isn't succeeding in job hunting, so Koyama recommends for him to contact the photographer Noguchi Hiromi. "This King thing, it's nonsense. I don't want this kind of title. I just want something much more average..."
Wait does Kiyoi ever say this in the third or fourth episode? “This King thing, it’s nonsense. I don’t want this kind of title. I just want something much more average…” This sounds like something he said in the last episode of the first season in the classroom scene. It’s also really close to the translation of that same scene in the first book except they aren’t in a classroom. It’s an alley.
Lollipopsub: Utsukushii Kare bonusclip
I got a request to add subtitles to this little bonus clip with Kiyoi and Hira.
It’s based on the side story “Moon Age: 14” at the end of the novel, but it’s really just a cute little clip of Hira and the ever so gorgeous Kiyoi.
The original clip has Japanese captions in black boxes, so sorry if it looks a little rough but I placed the English on top of it as best I could.
Enjoy!!
This is basically a mini rendition of the first episode of season 2. I didn’t realize it was meant to be a side story because in the English translation of the novel it’s Chapter 4 not a side story. Also I love how close Kiyoi gets to Hira’s face when he makes that cow comment. lol Plus them holding hands 🥹. I’m also pretty sure that the shirt Hira ends up wearing is something Kiyoi wears in the second season but I think he has the white version which means they have a couples outfit. 😏
I see, he learned from Kiyoi how to deal with affection
-
they have indeed slight Hira & Kiyoi vibes
(to be fair it is a bit creepy but so was Hira lol)
Japan keeps feeding us with the "quiet neurodivergent coded weirdo (affectionate) x emotionally constipated popular guy" kind of ships. I am delighted.
there’s this genre of Japanese BL boys where they ask their partner an innocent sincere “what are we?” and it always kills me
Please watch "My Beautiful man", Kiyoi is so Kacchan-coded (and Hira sometimes is very Deku-coded)
It's the vibes.

The second photo captures the dynamic of their relationship from Kiyoi’s POV so well. Hira doesn’t notice how Kiyoi longs for him.
Hira’s face in the first photo captures his intensity so well when he thinks he needs to protect Kiyoi.
Yusei and Riku really captured their characters well in this photoshoot.
