TRIBUTE TO ALHAGI SWAEBOU CONATEH In Memoriam My very earliest memories of being #Gambian and growing up #Gambian are due to Alhagi Swaebou Conateh and his family. On/around 1978/1979 my family relocated from Brussels where my father, the late #AKNjie had been stationed for some time while working for The Gambia Government’s Foreign Service. My mother, brother, myself and at the time my youngest sister Aji Bintou Njie-Sowe relocated to The Gambia ahead of my father. It was while living at Dippa Kunda that I first:  Went to “Dara” and had to be responsible for writing my Koranic lessons and each week cleaning my tablet, “Aah-loo-wah” with water and lemons to get it clean for the following week’s lesson;  Walked in the evenings to get “Chereh” from Mam Katy for dinner;  Had my first accident because I wanted hot beignet and ran from “Kerr Gu Mak” or Dukereh Kunda across a busy street to get to my mother who would surely give me beignet;  Watched as Papa Swaebou worked tirelessly to wean my sister Aji Bintou off her pacifier;  Got registered for school at Methodist Primary; I could go on and on but the shared experiences are too numerous to recount and list. My Dad’s friendship with Papa Swaebou began before our family was even a thought and has stood the test of time. Two men from very diverse backgrounds became friends with a common goal of contributing significantly to the development of The Gambia: Both men studied in the US with Swaebou going to Kansas and my father to Boston. I will leave others to extol the academic, professional and other exceptional achievements of these great man. What I know is that their friendship was a classic example of ties that bind which can meet and #exceed bloodline family ties and that my family is living testament to this. When we moved to The Gambia, The Conateh family shared everything they had. There was no differentiation between Alf’'s children or Swaebou's children. I cannot recall now how long we all lived together but based on my childhood memories, it was surely for a long and extremely happy time. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mr. René Carayol at his book signing event last night. To say that I was blown away is an understatement. I will not speak to that which is beyond me, namely his eloquence, intelligence and obvious passion. What I will speak to is his ability to motivate and inspire. In the space of an evening, this is what moved me the most. I walked in not knowing really what to expect but just prepared to support #OneOfOurOwn. For you see, he is #Gambian and as he puts it, the #SonOfImmigrants. His story is not unique, some elements of his life ring true for most of us in the diaspora; for most of us who left home voluntarily or involuntarily in search of a better future not for ourselves but for our children. As such, it is inevitable that his story(ies) will leave a mark on us. It goes beyond just us though, to a larger extent, Rene will leave his mark on everyone he comes in contact with. I urge all my friends, family, young or old to find a way to meet Mr. René Carayol and hear him speak. It could be a face to face or virtual meeting. Google him, find him on YouTube and above all, get his book “SPIKE” which is available on Amazon. Let us all find a way to focus on our strengths, amplify them and discover the hidden greatness in all of us. My goal now is to finish reading this book, have my children and their friends do the same and hopefully empower the next generation which the strength and confidence to become the next great leaders.
