I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mr. René Carayol at his book signing event last night. To say that I was blown away is an understatement. I will not speak to that which is beyond me, namely his eloquence, intelligence and obvious passion. What I will speak to is his ability to motivate and inspire. In the space of an evening, this is what moved me the most. I walked in not knowing really what to expect but just prepared to support #OneOfOurOwn. For you see, he is #Gambian and as he puts it, the #SonOfImmigrants. His story is not unique, some elements of his life ring true for most of us in the diaspora; for most of us who left home voluntarily or involuntarily in search of a better future not for ourselves but for our children. As such, it is inevitable that his story(ies) will leave a mark on us. It goes beyond just us though, to a larger extent, Rene will leave his mark on everyone he comes in contact with. I urge all my friends, family, young or old to find a way to meet Mr. René Carayol and hear him speak. It could be a face to face or virtual meeting. Google him, find him on YouTube and above all, get his book “SPIKE” which is available on Amazon. Let us all find a way to focus on our strengths, amplify them and discover the hidden greatness in all of us. My goal now is to finish reading this book, have my children and their friends do the same and hopefully empower the next generation which the strength and confidence to become the next great leaders.
