Modern day vampire but its some dude who lives on the country side. Not as some ominous old man but like it a stereotypical country man. Like that's just Uncle Timbob, he has horses and cows and chickens on his farm. He sells eggs and milk and meat at the farmers market every Saturday with his wife. He brings his horses and ponys to the fair so they could kids and teens rides around the property. And everything Sunday he brings his kids and love to church to listen about the good lord. Even going to help out during the holidays. Hes been living in that small community for about over 200 years and all is great and beautiful.

AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS LAST ACT THOUGHTS:

Woof what can I even say, I legit just doing this by what comes to mind first, then writing it down.

I wasn’t onboard with Soma theory at first but after episode 8 it just felt like that’s where they were going, despite them all deciding that the idea of leaving was unobtainable any way. I’m glad ep 9 kinda just said it and moved on cuz at the end of the day, them being brain scans doesn’t take the humanity out of their characters.

The reveal that Jax abstracted was so abrupt like I was actually so flabbergasted I didn’t even realise it was him at first. I do have a gripe here like I would have loved to of seen him abstracting but I do understand why it was shot that way.

I didn’t register the Pomni and Ragatha hug scene first time I watched cuz I was still reeling over Jax haven abstracted but the second time I watched it made me cry. (I do think they walked away from waaaaay too long).

I do think it’s a lil weird for Pomni to call Ragatha her closest friend, like of course Ragatha has been doing her best to be there for Pomni and what not but I would have loved if they had more scenes together that were the awkward ones so I could be more happy about Pomni saying that.

That fucking parallel with Pomni looking up at abstracted Jax the same way Kinger looked up at Abstracted Queenie… oooh the funnybunny girl in me oooo.

That entire sequence inside Jax’s mindscape was just amazing, how he feels about everyone and if they abstracted. I can’t lie the Gangle one makes me uncomfortable in all the right ways like Jax get a job and stay away from her.

I knew from the get go that Jax fucked up his relationship with Ribbit, that entire confession which if you aren’t dense or in denial that Jax is closeted trans fem/genderfluid which ever floats your boat (that rabbit is not cis tho), tells you everything about why Jax is the the way (s)he is. But deciding after Ribbit needed to be punished because they knew his vulnerability was insane but exactly what someone like Jax was going to do, it was insanely hard to watch but it was perfect.

Loved Ribbit and Kaufmo btw omg they were wonderful.

The streetlight. The fucking streetlight man, I wasn’t crying at this point yet, it wasn’t until Jax said “you weren’t supposed to love me” I started crying. Then he said “I don’t wanna go” and I started bawling.

The way he said “I hate you”, that was the most unhateful way I’ve ever heard it said. He really loved her, and I see it either platonically/romantically, love is such a beautiful thing I just wish Jax could have let that love from others in.

ISN’T SHE LOVELY, ISN’T SHE BEAUTIFUL.

Gangle not being able to cry initially when Jax abstracted was absolutely beautiful for her character. Considering this person had borderline tortured her for the duration of her time at the circus, she has every right to even be happy that Jax can no longer hurt her. But then later when it sets in that this is it and Jax is no longer around and can’t hurt her, she finally cries. It’s so complex and nuanced GOD.

Caine coming back had me and my theatre yelling “WHAT”, but I frigging loved that scene and haven’t seen a lot of other theatre people talking about it. I just love his epiphany of his selfishness and the letting go of the anger he had. Though it did feel a tad rushed, I feel like he needed to stew in his feelings for longer but they only had an hour so I get it

Using the shapes he first ever responded with to get back to the circus was amazing omg, absolutely loved that sequence. I’m glad that he gets to be happy, I would have felt bad if died without ever learning WHY the way he treated the others was bad and him redeeming himself so he could be on equal footing with the humans.

Some part of me kinda wishes that we didn’t get to see what they looked like as humans cuz I loved seeing people interpretations for them, but I’m not gonna pretend seeing and hearing what they’re up to as humans didn’t also make me cry. I’m so happy they’re all in the places they wanted to reach and some version of Jax is out there finding himself.

Such a bittersweet but hopeful ass ending, I’m so glad they all have control of the circus and are making it a place they can all call home

The credits were SOOOO cute omg, my fav was defo them back at the beach and you see Kinger and Caine doing some father son fishing.

ABSTRAGEDY FUCKING SEX SCENE WE FUCKING WIN.

My biggest complaint of the series is that I wish it was longer (so we can explore characters like Ragatha and Zooble), I think if that’s the complaint I have, it speaks to how good the series was.

Eridians and human myths

Eridians find out about human myths, legends,and tales through the portable earth thinking machine or through Grace.

Think about it, they find the human body weird and funky, imagine learning about stories of the humans suddenly coming alive after death, or a virus or disease that rots and distorts the body and mind, causing the vessel to become very violent and aggressive. Attacking other people with the goal of feasting on their flesh.

Imagine them finding out about creatures and monsters hidden in forests and mountains, they way that can shift their form into something resembling easy prey, or mimicking a predator. The stories and legends of animals that look for too wrong to be normal, too large, too off, too human. Learning of Uncanny Valley, and the theory of how, in the far past, people had encountered a predator so fierce and horrifying that the entire species had to develop a 7th sense just to detect it.

I think we should talk about about the cannibal aspect at the end of PHM.

Grace returning to earth after living on Erid for a long while, his lifespan increased because there ain't no WAY Rocky was gonna let him die, and frankly neither was the rest of Erid. So they(Grace, and Rocky and co.) show up on Earth again with a renovated Hail Mary all shiny and new and better, Earth is surprised, sure but is more then welcoming to the beings that saved their lives. They are treated like the best thing to ever happen to Earth. Because they are. And when it comes to trying human food for the first time in a few lifespans, it tastes off for some reason. It doesn't taste as he remembered.

But hey! Its been so long that maybe it changed over the years, or with the close call ice age that happened, the lack of livestock had a hand in it.

Who knows! Certainly not the fact that Grace was living off of meat and plants made with his own tissue for so long that his body adapted to it and now regular food isn't processed as well, to the point of making him sick. That can't be it that's crazy. Even if the very smell of burnt human flesh is enough to arouse his hunger for something familiar. Not that! Definitely not, absolutely not, he was just a little hungery after not having true food in a hot minute that he needs to get used to it. (A me-burger sound really good right now) Even if its been a bit and hes still getting nauseous over the smell and after taste of chicken and beef and plants and fruits. Its fine though.

Reading posts about Ryland and his Eridian classes and had this thought:

Ryland's first class is about to graduate from "primary" education, and they're all headed to specialization. Some will come back to study with him at a graduate level, essentially, but most need their secondary education with their peers as a focus.

It's also common that they all started acquiring "human" nicknames as they were in his class. Almost immediately on Day 1, they scrambled home to tell parents about Teacher Grace and the cool things he showed off. What they have been nicknamed and what the meanings are.

They're his first class, and he wants to sends them off well.

After trying to figure out what to do, he gets an idea from Eridian culture combined with some Earth classics. He recruits Rocky and gets to work.

On the last day of class, the students show up to find thread and little bowls of beads all about. Eridian letters carved into the surface of some, English letters in others. Stars, moons, mathematical symbols, and more.

Ryland explains the concept of friendship bracelets. He knows Eridians have special jewelry often as part of their culture (courtship, marriage, birth, major life events) and wanted to give them a human version of it. He made sure that each get a packet with their human names as beads, but he leaves the rest to them.

The class adores it, and they make Teacher Grace make one with them. They pick out the Eridian letters for his name and he adds a "year 1" to the necklace. Everyone leaves the class with the coveted gifts.

It becomes tradition. Every class that graduates makes a Charm Necklace with, at minimum, their Human Nicknames on the strands. Ryland makes a new one each year, with later years bringing chips from molted carapaces as beads for Ryland to add.

(When Ryland passes, all of his students come to his memorial wearing their necklaces, tracing out worn and new beads with reverence and love.)

(It continues to be tradition, old students stepping in where Ryland left off. Students who never knew Ryland still find Nicknames along the way, and they make their necklaces as their predecessors had.)

(And, years on, when humans and Eridians bridge the gap of space, humans are a little surprised to see the envoy wearing a necklace with a human word on it. The Eridians have a more advanced version of the translator, thanks to continued work, but, they explain, it was a tradition. Those of Ryland's class and beyond created these necklaces, and they wear them now in honor of him as they meet more of his species.)

(And then, at the end of the talks, once humans and Eridians make their bond official, the Eridians offer necklace and bead supplies and packs of Eridian letters. Just as Grace taught them before, as a token of friendship and care, so, too, do the Eridians do now - bestowing their new friends with Eridian names, carrying them in the form of Friendship Necklaces.)

(And the humans, well, they think it's a bit childish, but, really, it seems to fit the legendary Captain Doctor Ryland Grace. Plus, best not to piss off their new friends, so friendship bracelet making it is.)

thinking about a very specific scenario of a grace with no video logs, with no xenonite failure, who comes back to earth as rocky comes back to erid, heart full but missing a very distinct piece. ten, twenty years go by, and grace is not malnourished nor does he look even half his age, but there's a deepset something in his eyes that has nothing to do with stratt's actions being revealed or the press or adjusting to earth again. about earth getting news of a ship coming down, whose atmosphere is fundamentally different now and causes trouble for that ship. damages sustained on that ship. a red light in the sky. suspected eridian contact as confirmed by dr ryland grace. thank you tom, anna temple here and we're live at nasa's makeshift landing pad, ready to receive, watching- oh, my- a row of officials that cannot pin down ryland grace this time as he, live on air, tears apart every country's anxiety of eridians by ripping from the crowd and jumping the fence into the launching area. a camera pan that judders from dr grace sprinting, the most energetic he's been in years, to a brown eridian kareening towards him in a xenonite suit. prepared to catch ryland's tackle and embrace him properly, there on the green grass, for the very first time. first contact.

I've read a lot of fics and posts about Rocky imitating some of Grace's body language or phrases, but I haven't seen nearly ENOUGH about Grace being the one to copy Rocky.

Grace tapping or stomping twice to signal a question.

Grace doing the jazz hands.

Grace doing that thing when Rocky is counting that he uses his fingers (even if Grace isn't actually counting with them, he picks up the gesture)

Give me Grace being a weirdo and walking on all fours like Rocky. Rocky thinks it's hilarious how slow he is like that.

Give me Grace subconsciously copying random noises Rocky makes (not the words, but his equivalents to "ooohhh"s and "ahhhh"s and "hmmmm"s) because if there's something I've noticed about humans, it's that if we spend long enough with someone, we start mimicking each other. Hell, even with animals it happens! You've ever noticed that cat owners have entire meow-ing conversations with their cats? With dogs it happens too. Or that when parrots do their bobbing dances, a lot of us start copying that? And their chirping too. I like that a lot. I'd like to see Grace doing that.

I love love LOVE a platonic relationship between Rocky and Grace where neither of them are normal about each other.

They’re best friends but by both Earth and Eridian standards everyone is like “Oh wow, they’re… close-”

Like little to no cares about privacy around each other because, well, fuck you aren’t getting much of that on a spaceship for multiple years now are you?

Wherever one goes there’s a 50% chance the other will be there too.

Whenever Grace talks to another Eridian he uses some sort of portable instrument to communicate but with Rocky they just speak in two separate languages at each other. It’s like seeing someone speak to someone in only Chinese and the other person only responds back in English.

Would be funny if Eridians aren’t very touchy but Rocky is basically clingy as fuck when it comes to Grace. Always tugging on his pants like a toddler to get his attention and stuff.

Grace just using Rocky in either his ball, enclosure or his xenonite suit as a backrest while he’s grading or doing work or something, Rocky fully absorbed in his own thing. Sitting as close together as physically possible while having zero interaction with each other. Parallel play at it’s best.

These two come in a pair. Do not separate.

All of this and more, fully platonically, people wonder if they’re the world’s first weird inter solar system couple and if they’re in some weird polycule with Adrian but no, they’re just like that.

It’s just Rocky and the human he adopted as a permanent part of his family that he will spend every possible second of the rest of his short life with because he won’t be here forever and he’s not going to waste any of his time for the world.

Also Adrian still loves Rocky and isn’t quite as close to Grace as he is but is also very fond of the weird awkward alien their mate brought home because Grace is Rocky’s family and that makes Grace Adrian’s family too.

of course grace is delighted! but it'd be very funny if rocky had just. a massively specific regional accent. and now grace has it too. all the eridians from that area are like OMG THE ALIEN IS ONE OF US - we're adopting it. that's an honorary member of the clan. listen to it. it might as well have grown up here.

...actually i'm gonna do it. fuck it. rocky is space scottish. to me. he's mine now, i'm taking him out to look at the kelpies and the falkirk wheel and climb up ben ledi. he can go fishing in a loch. and now grace's eridian accent is their equivalent of scots. he says stuff to adrian's family (posh motherfuckers) and theyre like 'i think it's trying to communicate with us..?' meanwhile adrian, well used to rocky's accent by now, is like 'it's giving you a compliment. be nice to my spouse's alien, please.'

(adrian is like the dad who doesn't want a cat. theyre like this is my spouse rocky and rocky's... alien friend.. and then like two months later rocky comes in and adrian is letting grace sleep on top of them. he was cold, I couldn't just let him shiver, and rockys like no no beloved you're so right, and secretly rubbing his claws together like yesss just let it happen, grace will win all of erid over at this rate..)

i like when eridians describe grace in other-worldly, incorporeal, eldritch ways. that he's beautiful and terrifying at the same time. a horror you can't look away from because you don't want to miss a thing.

you can never get a clear listen to him. his primary sense node is covered in "hair" and the part that isn't is hidden by two crystals that refract sound waves in a pleasing but disorienting way. he covers his body in billowy cloth at all times. not snug and sensible and unobstructive like eridian coverings, but loose and layered, draped and flowing.

the most clear part of him are his internal organs. because yes, the alien's carapace isn't sound-proof. his single heart beats insistingly in his core, his lungs exchanging gas constantly, his long digestive tract always bubbling and contracting. his thorax is packed impossibly tight and it's all moving and singing.

and it shouldn't be possible, with how fragile he is, for that internal pressure to maintain. how does the thin membrane of his external organ (another horror that sends eridians reeling) keep it all contained? his "skin" is so easily pierced, cut, bruised, burnt, how does he not split open under his own mass?

when savior rocky first arrived home and described the environmental needs of his alien, the scientists thought he'd made a mistake in his frantic panic to get everything out. it isn't possible this being lives at such low atmospheric pressure, at half the gravity, and in a gas that's nearly double the weight of ammonia. in a gas so dangerous, so caustic. and if it does then how is it obligately terrestrial like rocky claims? shouldn't it fly or float instead? (and then to see it in the water, learning that it can float or sink at will.)

and this alien has come bearing gifts that will not only save your species but launch it into impossible heights of technological and intellectual advancement. he has discovered the solution to astrophage and bred it to thrive on threeworld and translated his instructions into eridian. he has given your people the complete sum of his people's knowledge, advanced in ways the eridians can't believe and behind in ways that seem ludicrous. and he has given his life for your people to have these things.

he knows how your solar system was formed. he knows how the universe started.

his name means beautiful and generous and relieving.

the eridians experiencing cosmic bliss.

be not afraid.

Project Hail Mary where everything is the same but the first memory that comes to Grace isn't reading about the Pertova Line while waiting for a check at 7 in the morning, just finishing up breakfast before work(chap.1) but instead, its the meeting with Stratt telling him that he will board Hail Mary(end of chap.23)
