Rey dreams of a great, dark beast, hunting her through a shadowed forest. Its eyes are red and it knows her, is waiting for her. She dreams of water, gray waves stretching as far as the eye can see. And she dreams of Ben. His eyes glow red and she calls him a monster.
Yes, he says. Yes, I am.
She wakes to find the bed empty beside her. One of Benās hairs is on the pillow where he lay and she picks it up, rubbing it between her fingers as she peers at it in the dim light. She carefully places it back on the pillow, like a piece of him sheās keeping safe. The sun has gone down and the room is gray and dull, the colours leached out of the quilt at the end of the bed and the corners filled with shadows.
She gets up, showers, and changes into a big sweatshirt and fresh underwear. Sheās tying up her wet hair into a messy bun on her head as she walks into the living room when she sees him. Ben is sitting in a chair by the window facing her, the last light of sunset illuminating him. She makes a small startled sound and stops, freezing in place.
His eyes are black holes, but she can feel them on her. Her neck prickles.Ā
āI couldnāt leave,ā he says, his deep voice breaking the hush of the room.
A primal fear sends her heart racing. When she doesnāt reply, he adds, āNot until I knew you were okay.ā
āIām okay,ā she says automatically. Itās true, maybe.
He doesnāt move.
She dares a step closer. The gloom has an almost physical feel to it, like she has to push through shadows to get to him.
āBen,ā she says.
He straightens in his seat, puts his hands on the armrests like heās going to push himself up to stand.
Iām fine, she should say. You can go. The words are on the tip of her tongue. She opens her mouth. Sending him away now seems the right thing, the only thing to do.
They both jump at the beep of his tracker. It must be nine oāclock. Curfew time.
The sound seems to bring them both back to life. He stands up, the chair scraping across the wooden floor behind him.
She takes a deep breath and the crawling chill on her spine dissipates.Ā
āCan I kiss you goodnight?ā he asks, in front of her now.
In response, she reaches up, stands on her tip-toes to pull him down to her. Their mouths meet and he tastes so good, so warm, like everything sheās ever wanted. Dangerous.
āFuck,ā he mutters when they pull apart.
She could go with him, it occurs to her. He had asked her once before and she had run. She didnāt think he would ask again, but she knows heāll say yes if she asks him.
āGoodnight,ā she says instead. Maybe another time. The words echo in her skull like she said them out loud. āIāll see you tomorrow,ā she offers.

So I donāt usually (when I say usually I mean never) comment on the stories I read, one of those silent reader types. However I discovered your Summer Heat story and had to say how amazing it is. I canāt explain it in words. I hope one day you update it because itās truly amazing and special. Though as someone who use to write fan fiction I understand that things happen and its hard to update or continue for one reason or another. But this story is so wonderfully written fantastic job! ā¤ļø

Summer Heat was one of the first fics reviewed on the podcast. It is so wonderful, the world building is just amazing, the characters are brilliantly written and it is an ABO that will leave you wanting to know more about the genre. Even if it doesnāt come back, @isharan has given us an amazing gift in this fic. If you havenāt already gotten into it, even if you arenāt into ABO, Summer Heat will pull you in. You will become enthralled with this fic and you will love it.

So is Cary Island real, but Cary's Island (how it's written in your fic) fictional? And the dog's name is Bear. And it's Canada.
Hahaha okay so what happened is I was trying to think of a story to recreate for the Rewritten Reylo anthology last year. My friend joked that I should use the Marian Engel novel, Bear, and I was like l m a ooooooooā¦ā¦..WAIT.Ā
(Sidenote: I learned about Bear from some Tumblr post then got it out from the library and sent the umā¦.relevant parts to friends so they could share the horror. Yes, this is what being my friend is like. So thatās how my friend knew about the novel.)
I got to thinking about how I could remake the story for Reylo. Kylo had to be the bear ofc so I was trying to think how he could be in this isolated place and kind of not able to leave, while Rey could come to him. And then *poof* the idea was born of alpha!Ben being an outcast and Rey coming for the summer and getting to know him etc.Ā
The setting is real! My grandfather and his friend built cottages beside each other on a lake in Ontario and thatās where itās set. :) There was no road access to the cottages until after I was born, so they had to bring everything over by boat. I changed the name of the lake and called the island at the entrance to the bay Cary Island (from the novel). Everything is real from the swamps to the islands to the directions of the waves when it rains.Ā
