"I spent my teenage years studying Islam full time in a Darul Uloom. During this period, I faced a really difficult inner-struggle. On one hand, I really wanted to understand Islam properly and practice it well. On the other hand, I was a teenager and wanted to have fun. Reflecting back on this period, one major obstacle that made life difficult for me as a practicing teenager was the unrealistic expectations of others. It seems like our ummah has an all-or-nothing attitude towards practicing Islam, and when we see a young person practicing Islam, we immediately pick on his/her faults to remind them they aren't perfect. Because of this societal pressure, many young people choose not to practice Islam at all, knowing that whatever they do, society will still see the bad in them. As a teenager, I would study Islam day and night, but in between all the studies and Salah, I would play PlayStation, watch TV, read novels and comic books. Yet I did all of this in complete secret knowing that I was expected to be perfect. I never committed a major sin during this period, yet would often feel like a major sinner for even the slightest slip-up, due to society's expectations of perfection. Reflecting back on this period as a young adult, I believe we really need to change our expectations of others. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not expect perfection from his companions, especially the young ones. It is well known that among the young companions, there were times when the Prophet (peace be upon him) caught them looking at members of the opposite gender, talking about things they shouldn't talk about and one even asked for permission to commit zina. The prophet (peace be upon him) was very gentle in his guidance of these youth because he understood human nature well. We even find many narrations of the young sahaba playing and having fun, yet the Prophet (peace be upon him) would allow it because he understood the needs of people that age. Even today, as an adult, I still feel this societal pressure to be perfect. Knowing that everything I post or share on Facebook is being judged by people who expect perfection from their teachers. (or their enemies) The position has changed, but the expectations remain the same. This attitude has created an environment of hostility and fakeness. We pretend to be something we are not in order to meet the expectations of others. My advice to everybody is to stop expecting perfection. Don't expect perfection from converts, shaykhs, your spouse, your children, your role models or your teens. It doesn't exist. Guide gently, give space to grow and relax, and be a role model to others. That is the Sunnah method of dealing with people. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised the Du'aat among the Sahaba: "Make things easy for the people and do not make things difficult for them. Give them good news and do not chase them away," Today, we do the opposite." - Ustadh Abu Muawiyah Ismail Kamdar
When you continue to fake and live out who you are truly not, you will experience internal conflicts in life. So, try to stop faking it and live the life you were created to fulfil (your fitrah). Rediscover your fitrah, your core values and return to your authentic and true self. Your authentic self, the true you, requires that you align and make congruent your self image, stature, values, religious beliefs, goals, behaviour, fitrah, and public image. Find ways to regain the drive, passion, excitement, and confidence locked inside waiting for you to live it, with Allah swt guidance insha'Allah.

In follow up of the 'Lessons from the 4 Greatest Women' I've started a new three part series on the Life of Aisha - May Allah be pleased with her.

She was the beloved wife of the Prophet peace be upon Him.
The daughter of the first Khalifah Abu Bakr As Siddiq.
She was a Muhaddiathat – memorising 2,210 Ahadith, bringing her in third place out of all the companions who memorised hadith.
She was a Hafiza and Faqeeha – her legal opinions were sought out by prominent sahabas.
Let us discover the greatness of Aisha ...
Part 1
One of the distinct qualities that made Aisha the great woman she was and excel above other women was her profound knowledge.
This is what the Prophet peace be upon Him had to say regarding this matter:
‘Learn a portion of your religion from this red head lady’
Abu Musa Ash’ari said: Whenever the Sahabas of Rasulullah peace be upon Him had doubts about anything they referred it to Aisha and always found the answer with her’ – Ibn Sa’d
Every successful person be they Muslim or not, had a yearning to read and learn. A desire to never stop educating themselves; be it thrpugh life experiences, universities, books, lectures and self reflection.
If you desire greatness, if you want success, you must begin here. Begin with the books your reading, the courses your attending. What you read will influence your life more than anything else.
In regards to Aisha, she gained her education by living with the Prophet peace be upon Him. Unlike most of the male Sahabas, Aisha had a unique perspective of observing the Prophet peace be upon Him during his private, secluded times at home. Thus, she was able to narrate the Sunnah habits of sleeping, entering the house and so forth. Mu’awiyah said: I have never seen a speaker as well spoken, as eloquent and as intelligent as Aisha’ – Ibn S’ad
Urwa said: I have not seen a woman as knowledgeable in medicine, Fiqh and poetry as Aisha’ – Tabraani What can we learn from these statements?
To pursue a variety of passions.
Have many things to talk about but few to master in.
With Aisha she was not only knowledgeable in Islamic matters but other beneficial subjects.
Mastering one subject is not enough.
Your goal should be to become a well rounded woman.
A woman who is intelligent, smart and confident. A woman who can hold interesting conversations and not be afraid to share her passion with the world.
Like Aisha, whenever you are given the opportunity to learn something, take it to your advantage.When Aisha would hear about people’s illness and their treatments, she would memorize them. That’s how she became proficient in medicine.
Action Steps: 1. Begin building your personal library: choose one book on Islam or Non Fiction and dedicate a specific time to read every day (even 10 minutes) 2. Expand your passions: What makes you excited and feel alive? Is it photography, art, cooking, swimming? Whatever the activity - schedule some time to nurture your soul. Make yourself happy.
