My local comic shop says your magazine was discontinued? Is that true?
not at all.
ISLAND went on a break for a few months but started again monthly after #7
how many pages for the habitat tp?
It’ll be 96 pages - time constraints are limiting the version that comes out in ‘island’ to about 80 pages, but i’ll be adding in a couple pages for pacing purposes and a little bit of developmental sketchbook stuff
(pictured above - a bit of the cover for said trade paperback)
Evolution of ANCESTOR
Matt Sheean and I had been working out the idea for Ancestor for awhile before Brandon Graham asked if we could do something for Island. Towards the end of 2013 we put together a pitch for Ancestor as a mini-series. Here are the first three pages from that -
Nothing happened with the pitch, but by the time it was decided that Ancestor would be serialized in the pages of Island, Matt and I knew we’d be re-writing and redrawing what was done for the pitch. These pages changed significantly: • It went from three pages to five. I mean, we were gonna get a page rate, why condense things?? Really though, this sequence was the most personal and insightful sequence for the main character in the first chapter, so we wanted it to really resonate, and that required a bit more real estate. • We changed the way the ‘title’ was displayed, partially because of how we wanted the subsequent chapters to be titled. We wanted to make it more minimal right off the bat, to visually indicate the beginning of our story in the pages of many other stories inside the anthology. • We had a firmer grasp on how we would depict The Service, so we ditched the more metaphorical ‘brain opening’ up idea and went with something we would depict more consistently through out the series.
Of course there were all kinds of smaller changes too, take a look at the finished pages:

The gutters for Ancestor part two (in Island 5, out today!!) get progressively darker as the situation in the story escalates.
Preview of part two of ANCESTOR by Matt Sheean and Malachi Ward. For Island #5, out in one week (Dec. 23).
These are a couple of the shots from the 4 page fashion spread I ( @boysfantasy ) did for Issue 5 of Island. IT*S COMING OUT SOON! YEAAH! The backgrounds are just photos from vacations and stuff, and the clothes are.. kinda based on real life. I think huhu
JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS: Chapter 2 of Habitat (my space-cannibal epic) will run in Issue #5 of Island Magazine (out dec 23rd)! Ask for it by name!

the first inks for habitat chapter 3, in island #8
@mattsheean and I did the cover for Island #7, which will include part 3 of Ancestor. The lineup is real good in this issue:
ISLAND #7 STORY / ART: BRANDON GRAHAM, LIN VISEL, MATT SHEEAN, MALACHI WARD, & MICHAEL DEFORGE FEBRUARY 17 / 112 PAGES / FC / T+ / $7.99 The ongoing oversized comics magazine continues with the third chapter of MATT SHEEAN and MALACHI WARD’s “Ancestor,” and introduces new stories by MICHAEL DEFORGE(Lose, Ant Colony) and LIN VISEL (Slipshine).
The second chapter of Ancestor Matt Sheean and I did for Island #5 is like the most suspenseful comic we’ve ever made.
Is the cover of chapter 2 of Habitat traditional or digital art? Looks traditional to me but sometimes it is hard to tell.
All the art for habitat starts with traditional ink and pen, but is colored digitally like so:
Inks
A file i made in 2010 thats a bunch of layered inkwash textures gets dropped on there
A layer mask gets applied to that and i erase and render away where the light falls, to define the shape more
that gets zapped with a brown gradient map and some blues for the shadows
some colors on there
and some extra effects! Done. (there are like a million more microsteps then what is shown here but thats the basic procedure i’ve been using)
