My finished story boards for my film
Chet Faker - Cigarettes and Chocolate. Here is one of the Tracks from the Newcomer Chet Faker all rights belongs to him ! Mix of Indie and Minimal
The music I used in the background of my video is âcigarettes and chocolateâ by Chet Faker
Making the Perfect sandwich My first attempt at a short film for college and I'm very pleased with it. I edited this on iMovie.
This is the camera I used to shoot my short film as it is able to capture film and audio. It is a canon 1100D, a relatively affordable body but still manages some great things. The lens is my own 18-55mm standard lens.
This is a Quik Pod DSLR/POV MONOPOD which has many positive and negatives features over a regular tripod. It is much lighter and much more excess-able, allowing you to transport it easily when shooting on location. Unfortunately though, it is not a stable piece of equipment compared to a traditional trip-pod. Although it is not as dense as a tripod the camera shake is reduced significantly with a monopod.

When researching DSLR short films I became interested in the different equipment that can be used to enhance your film so that will be what the next few posts will be dedicated to. This above photo is of an on camera microphone with has a specially made microphone which fits the DSLR camera incredibly well. The audio on the camera itself is not of a high standard, meaning if you want the best quality sound an on camera microphone is the best option.Â

Me starting to draw a story board for my own film
Nikon D600 on set of âDaddy Dayâ short film shoot. Photo by Eric Scherbarth (relating to research video- 3)
Research video 3- 'Daddy Day' The third video I have chosen is 'Daddy Day' created by Eric Scherbarth revolving around him looking after his son, a toddler. This short film was given a honourable mention award at the Nikon Everyday Cinema Contest, proving its critical acclaim. This film surrounds a small boy being left in the room with an iron while his father takes a phone call. The slow motion in which the boy moves towards the appliance builds suspense and creates a slightly terrifying mood. Although, in contrast, the ambient music playing in the background adds a slight comedic twist, calming the viewer down. The film was shot with a Nikon DSLR, a tripod with a fluid head, either an f/2.8 or an f/1.4 lens and a 1Ă1 LED lite panel to add something extra to the toddlers eyes. What i find, arguably, most interesting about Scherbarths approach is its simplicity. It is possible to create beautiful films without the abundant use of expensive equipment and extensive crew members. 'Daddy Day' was made with just his wife and two friends for help in his apartment. Another thing i find intriguing about this film is a technique at (00:24) when it changes from the fathers perspective to the sons.
Le Miroir | Behind the scene (relating to my second research film posted below)
Research Video 2- âLe Miroirâ
The second video i have chosen, âLe Miroirâ is by the french filmmakers Ramon and Pedro and was produced by Xavier Derigo and Isabelle Pasini. The short film shows the life of a man, louis, from childhood right through to his elder years. This is achieved through many innovative, creative and intriguing ideas. The actors playing Louis are placed in front of a bathroom mirror and a variety of things, such as, toothbrushes, glasses, pictures and several more to distract us from the reflection, allowing the character to age seamlessly. What I find most interesting about this video is that is from the perspective of Louis, as if we are looking through his eyes, a technique i had rarely seen before. I also find it incredibly clever that the objects used help us determine his age, for example he has braces and a teenager and false teeth as an old man. This film is filled with differing compositions and lighting ideas, right from the very start when the light switch is being turned on, as if it is ourselves doing it (0:15). Each scene had to be filmed in two parts, the first being from Louisâs perspective, the second of Louisâs face so the reflection could be achieved. These pieces had to be perfectly timed for the editing process to work, a hard, time consuming task. This video also came along with backstage footage, which educated me in the vast amount work involved in film production. There is casting, set design and makeup before the filming can begin. The Backstage footage will be placed above this post.
Research video 1- The Camera (short film / original score) My following posts will be relating to my moving image project at college. Firstly, we were asked to find at least three example of short films that were filmed on a DSLR camera. My first choice was this video, which was made by filmmaker, Peter Lewis. It features a deserted holiday home, situated on the beachfront. It tells the story of a young girl, who finds a mysterious polaroid camera in a trunk in the house but the story isn't that simple. The camera manages to capture a boy, a boy who isn't is the room. This almost spooky video is incredibly impressive to me as it was Lewis's first finished film, beside some experimental, unmemorable things he tried in his teen years. He decided to go forward with this project after the death of an admired filmmaker of his Emily Pow, who this video is dedicated to, as he was tired of living in fear of criticism. To shot this film, lewis used a Canon Rebel EOS 550D T2i, with the lens Canon 50mm 1.4 and Tamron 28-200mm. Additionally the editing and color grading was done on final cut pro x and sound design, foley and original Score were completed on Logic Pro 9. What also makes this film impressive is that, even as a first attempt, it was still taken to a variety of film festivals and featured in PBS digital studios top 5 no budget short films and short of the week. Personally, i love the simplicity of the final product, it has an eerie finish created by straightforward compositions and natural lighting. This shows anyone has the ability to make some as beautiful as this.
