it was nearing midnight and vanessa had decided that she deserved to take a little trip to town. she used her phone’s flashlight to light her path as she neared the exit of the camp, slowing down as she started to hear noises behind her. she whipped around to determine the source and nearly jumped when the flashlight landed right on someone’s face. “ jeez! ” once realizing that she had just run into another student, she put a hand to her chest in relief and lowered the light. “ give a girl a warning next time. ” // @hollisopens

isla’s urge to escape the dreariness of camp was absolutely overwhelming so she found herself packing a few items in her mini backpack before tiptoeing out of her cabin and making her way towards the exit right beside it. the phone charger, wallet, and snacks she carries in her bag rattle against one another rather loudly as she steps on the crunchy grass. being too preoccupied with trying to keep her bag as still as possible she doesn’t realize the other student walking ahead of her. with the sudden bright led flashlight shining in her face isla shrieks and jumps back, nearly falling to the ground. “ fuck― ” she gasps audibly, her hand immediately rising to cup her mouth out of fear that someone heard them. “ i’m so sorry, i-i didn’t see you at all. i’m usually really good about being careful, but my piece of shit bag was being too loud for my liking and i got distracted... ”

“ PLEASE , don’t remind me , ” she says with a slight furrow of her brows as she stares pointedly at roo with an icy coldness. the soccer ball rolling off the tips of isla’s fingers as she drops it carelessly after having her suggestion be rejected. only a few moments after , isla’s cheeks flush intensely while her facial muscles tense up in a flicker of irritation at his undoing of her towel. she keeps her frustration in check despite feeling the dampness of her hair fall past her shoulders and to her bare upper back deciding to let him keep what he stole in order to preserve the semblance of peace between them. “ that’s RICH , ” she scoffs in disbelief , “ the only progress that occurred this past weekend was me getting PROGRESSIVELY wasted. ” clearly it would take a lot more than him kindly pushing her towards a forbidden recreational activity at camp for any kind of friendship to bloom between the pair and isla’s attitude was making sure he knew that. “ regardless , i’m sure i would’ve found out about it ONE WAY or another— ” cutting herself off to jump back into the shower stall for a brief moment to dress herself in a casual oversized t-shirt and shorts.

“ right — ” ayla says. she knows about ticks, living in new england for almost half of her life and all, but she doesn’t bother sharing this information with isla. she does, begrudgingly, have a point considering ayla’s the one who just got bitten by one. “ — thanks. i’d hate to have to deal with it later. ” she knows isla doesn’t like her too much, though nothing’s ever been said outright, just a campaign of micro-agressions that made ayla purse her lips. she didn’t like people NOT liking her, unless it was on her own terms, but she supposes in this case there’s very little to be done about it. it’s not like she’s going to stop being friends with roo so his ex might like her a fraction more, and RUMORS take on a life of their own, no matter how many protests there are. “ here — ” she bends to collect the other girl’s sketchbook and banana, hand outstretched as she offers them. her laptop is carefully balanced along her upturned forearm, the screen still lit up with the last photo she’d been working on, which is —as fate would have it— of roo ( a beautiful capture if she does say so herself, and not just because of the subject ). focus returns to isla instead, her tone polite. “ found anything worthwhile to capture ?? ”

“ thanks — ” she says begrudgingly, welcoming her items back into her possession. her eyes quickly glancing over the laptop perched in ayla’s arms, wincing at the photograph she had openly been editing. although isla didn’t want to acknowledge any of ayla’s work, she had to admit the photo the girl had snapped of roo was stunning. of course he looked phenomenal, it was difficult for him to ever look bad in a photo, but ayla’s shot went beyond that. despite not specializing in photography isla could tell the set up was GOLDEN. “ yeah, actually — ” she says hesitantly, deciding to give into the conversation ayla was attempting to engage her in. the very least isla could do was maintain SOME civility with the girl she barely knew. “ i was actually headed to the dock now, to spend some time sketching... i see you’ve been busy working — ” nodding towards her laptop and the image that graced the screen. “ that’s a great photo. truly. you did a great job capturing his essence. ”

rashad shoved the rest of his items into his bag before turning around to face isla. eyebrow raised at the heartbreaking comment, his eyes just barely caught glimpses of unfinished and finished works alike as isla flipped through her notebook. his interest was definitely piqued. as someone who wasn’t much of an artist himself, he held an appreciation for those with creative capacities. “ a reyes original will always be better than whatever they’ve got in the cafeteria. ” with that, he accepted the drawing and let out an impressed whistle as he examined it. he wasn’t sure what exactly he had expected to be on the page, but it hadn’t been this. the person depicted in the drawing was definitely him, though he couldn’t tell which specific moment it had been based on. “ this is cold. ” even rashad’s amateur eyes could appreciate the detail and effort that had clearly been put into the illustration. “ you’re gonna have stuff hanging in the museums someday, so maybe i could end up being the next mona lisa. ” the second hald of his statement was a joke, but he really believed she could be a big name in art one day. he finally looked away from the drawing to make eye contact with isla. “ thank you for this, for real. how long did it take? ”

rashad’s reaction was better than anything isla had expected, which quickly lead to her face flushing with warmth instantaneously. knowing he appreciated her work meant everything to the amateur artist especially after dedicating so many hours into getting every single feature of his as perfectly as possible. “ maybe, but definitely not because of my art. with a face like yours i’m surprised they haven’t trashed the mona lisa and asked you to stand in her place instead ! ” she says flirtatiously, nudging him playfully for his previous comment. although isla tried to brush off his compliment as nothing more than some off-handed joke, her heart raced at his belief in her. there was nothing she wanted more in the world than to create a name for herself in the art community and whether or not he meant what he said, isla is determined to see that goal through. “ no need to thank me, y’know i love doing this, ” offering rashad a sincere smile. “ ―oh, not too long. just a few hours, maybe days . . . honestly it all starts to blend together, really. ” her shoulders rising and falling as she answers carelessly. truth be told isla rarely kept track of how long it would take her to finish pieces as detailed as this one, her organizational skills lacking tremendously. “ anyway, besides giving you that, i wanted to ask if you were down to hangout today ? the boredom is getting to me and i thought ‘ who better to get me out of this funk than rashad ? ’ ”

“ god — could it get any HOTTER ?? ” ayla brushes back still-damp hair from her face, her dip in the cool waters of lake powell more a distant memory despite the fact it’s barely been twenty minutes. wyoming had absolutely no right to get so freaking HOT. she’d entertain another dip in the lake, but she’s intent on finishing her editing before nightfall and so remains sitting in the grass, her back against some large boulder and laptop perched across her thighs. of course, then is the moment some bug decides to take a bit out of her leg, sending her to stand up with a yelp, laptop precariously held one-handed as she tries to twist around to try to see the back of her legs. “ — it’s not still on me is it ?? ”

isla’s arms swing beside her with a banana and sketchpad in each of her hands as she heads excitedly toward the dock. she’s intent on spending a peaceful and solitary couple of hours enjoying the beautiful scenery when she passes ayla resting against the boulder, barely taking notice of her. isla doesn’t bother acknowledging the girl up until she’s forced to by the shriek she produces. her eyes bright and laughing above tight, withholding lips in an attempt to suppress her snickering. “ hold on — ” isla smirks teasingly as she drops her items on the floor before quickly smacking the nasty tick off of ayla, relishing in her discomfort. the rumors that float around hollis regarding her ex and ayla made the athlete awfully jealous and despite her better judgement, isla simply couldn’t keep herself from disliking the girl. “ thanks to ME, no, it isn’t. you should REALLY look into carrying some kind of repellent though. didn’t anyone tell you ?? these little fuckers will eat you alive if you aren’t careful. ”

the water pressure in the men’s showers is a vast improvement of that in the women’s which often encouraged isla to utilize them over the ones designated for her gender. she often made an effort to find a time where the men’s showers were empty and free for her to use. it’s just her luck that today she’s caught with some other person joining the stall next to her. upon finishing she wraps a thick , cotton towel around her glistening , sun-kissed skin before stepping out into the changing area , jumping slightly at the familiar voice. the grip she has on the cloth tightens dramatically as she turns to face the victim , emitting a malicious chuckle at their affliction. “ NOPE , but i wish i had so i could CONGRATULATE them for a job well done. ” the corners of her lips crinkling upwards in amusement as isla bent over carefully to wrap her hair in a towel she very well could have lent to roo. showing him any sort of kindness is the last thing isla planned on doing especially after noticing the obvious annoyance in his tone. instead , the brunette walks over to the isolated soccer ball in the room and kicks it up to her hand before handing it to him with a mischievous grin , “ this should be enough to cover up anything IMPORTANT. ”

𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖𝐒 𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐊𝐘 trying to spark a conversation with isla, he knew he wasn’t exactly her person at the moment; even if at one point of time he had been her go-to choice for company; and she had been his. he’d pulled away the second things started getting more serious and he didn’t blame her for the way she felt towards him, he knew he had hurt her in the process; but he wanted to make an effort to try to be on good terms. his arms rest over his knees, he’s human and he’s a boy and can’t help the way his eyes skim over her for a beat too long, before he’s prying them away. his lips twitch at the edges, a grin threatening to appear at the sudden change of demeanour from her at the mention of alcohol which promises a pinch of mischief to their day, it comes unsurprising to him and perhaps it’s why he casually dropped it in. he lifts a bare shoulder nonchalantly , “ heard an INFAMOUS valmont is behind it , so i can only IMAGINE that it’s been done . wouldn’t be surprised if it moonshine or ABSINTHE . ” he says with a laugh and a shake of his head. had he been at training camp for football he wouldn’t even humor the idea - not being one to drink much during the season, but it’s an entirely different case, there was no upcoming season for him - not in the way he wanted, anyway.

hearing his laugh brings a smile to her lips unconsciously; a sound so familiar to her that at one point in time brought so much warmth and happiness to her life. truthfully, isla missed him terribly or at least the comfort he provided, but she’d never admit it now considering her pride wouldn’t allow it. he would’ve been her first love had he given her the chance to admit it. the thought quickly disappears at the mention of sienna, a sly roll of her eyes knowing if it involved the mischievous cheerleader it had to be true. “ if she’s taken the TIME to do this then we can’t let the opportunity SLIP past our fingers ! ” isla says as she pushes herself off the ground, dusting herself off before beginning to walk towards the cafeteria; however, stopping abruptly to turn to roo and signal him to walk with her. it’s only fair that he join since he’s the one that mentioned it in the first place. “ so you’re STUCK being the mascot for the year, huh ? i heard what happened with the football team and everything-- not gonna lie, i kind of LAUGHED when i first caught wind of it, ” she pauses, reminiscing on the joy she felt when she’d heard what her ex’s punishment was. typically isla wasn’t so cruel, but she couldn’t help it in this particular situation as she considers the universe was simply dishing out the karma she believes he rightfully deserved. “ sucks LOSING something you LOVE, doesn’t it ? ” she asks rhetorically as resentment fills her tone, clearly referencing the hurt he brought upon her way back when. isla walks beside him and keeps her distance, kicking rocks to avoid having to make any sort of eye contact.

he’d been too focused on packing his stuff away to notice the approaching footsteps behind him. the scrimmage had forced the practice to run an hour longer, but it was starting to become such a common occurrence that rashad hardly registered the extension. it had been a pretty good, intense practice, which left him in a pretty great mood. his defenses shot up at the sudden blocking of his vision, but that tension cleared once he recognized the voice. “ i’m gonna have to go with isla, ” he said without having to turn around. “ and i hope this prize is food-related. ”

with his correct guess, isla happily let her hands fall to her sides before quickly crouching down to the ground to pickup the sketchbook she had conveniently dropped moments prior. her light laughter fills the air surrounding them, laced with a hum of amusement at rashad’s hopeful wish. “ i think i’m about to break your heart, ” isla teases as she flips through the pages of her book, landing on a page she had bookmarked ahead of time in preparation for her encounter with the goalie. with the utmost care, the brunette slowly tears the page from the wired spirals it’s attached to and hands it over to him. “ might not be food, but it is my art and y’know it might be worth a lot in the future, so... you’re very welcome, ” she jokes once more, nervously tucking a stray hair behind her ear awaiting his reaction. the drawing was that of rashad in action on the field based on a still photograph one of the team’s photographers had taken of him the season before. the sophomore often helped the aspiring artist with projects and she appreciated him greatly for it, so much in fact that she’s absolutely enchanted by the young man. “ so, what do you think? ” she asks earnestly, her eyes scanning the page in his hands critically, reviewing each stroke in hopes he’d like it.

Ians eyes felt like they were permanently dry, like he couldnt blink enough to get them to no longer feel like they were burning. The groan made him smile, finally someone seemed to be in worse shape than him, and damn did it endear him to her quick. Ian took a steadying breath in and shrugged. “looks like I am going out with you next time” he joked, standing up from his desk “sadly.. I am just the nutritionist.. however.. I do have some from my personal stash?” he offered with a smirk. “you got a preference? I have advil and tylenol, I have stronger stuff too, but we wont talk about that” he gave her a knowing glance. He walked over to the cabinet that he had hidden all of his contraband. He knew that searches of the rooms could happen, but more than likely it would be a nosey roommate that stole his stash, here in his ‘office’ he would have full control of it. “what did you get yourself into last night?” he asked as his back was faced to her

The corner of her lip twitches upward ever so slightly, the pain in her head making it nearly impossible for her to adequately respond to his suggestion. At any other moment she would jump at the opportunity to befriend someone who showed an interest in the reckless lifestyle she took pleasure in. Of course, her single goal at the moment is to ease the soreness and pounding she feels so upon hearing the nameless boy offer stronger medication Isla perks up and smiles eagerly. “Oh no, let’s talk about exactly that. I feel like there are hundreds of tiny dwarfs mining away at my head in search of diamonds, so the more powerful the better,” Isla insists, dragging a chair from the corner to place right next to his desk before quickly sinking into it. She tilts her head back and closes her eyes to avoid staring into the painful fluorescent lighting, not bothering to make eye contact with the stranger. “Well, I remember spending a majority of my night over at the Turtle Pub. Think I might have scammed some guys into buying me a few drinks... Got texts this morning with photos of me dancing across the bar top, think I slipped also because I have this fat ass bruise on my hip-- check it,” she finally opens her eyes and leans up, lowering the band of her sweatpants enough that the hand sized blue and purple markings could be seen.

𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐓𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐊 to the side ( perhaps with too much ease for someone who should be faking an injury ) as isla takes the pink sharpie and audibly leaves her own artwork on the brace . there’s a swift roll of sienna’s eyes, though features are still dancing with amusement , “ listen , i’m not a nurse, i strapped it on the BEST i could. can you fix it ? i’m trying to make it look more LEGIT by getting people to sign it . isn’t that what people do to the TRAGICALLY injured ? ” she straightens up as isla pulls away slightly, sienna’s fingers ghosting over her friend’s latest work of art , “ isla , your ARTISTE . picasso is literally rolling in his grave in JEALOUSY ; this plus a photo of your foot being sold on the black market and i won’t NEED to touch my trust fund EVER again . ” she teases before her lips jut out , forming a faux pout that falls onto her features far too easily , “ i’ll make a FAKE bruise using makeup , or MAYBE i can find someone to leave a hickey on my neck — or , NEW plan entirely - what if i took some gauze and just wrapped my ankle , think i can get out of HAVING to hop around in a potato sack ? i’ll wrap your ankle too , we can say we CRASHED a golf cart . i saw crutches in the FIRST AID centre . ”

“ well , CLEARLY . unfortunately i don’t think even I can fix this . ” she keeps her glossy lips pursed together as she attempts to hold in the boisterous laughter threatening to escape her . “ oh , for sure . i tried to make the penis as GRAPHIC as humanely possible . the veins i added are what really make it look ENGORGED and i agree-- picasso WISHES his cubes looked this nice ! ” if she wasn’t going to be taken seriously before then isla definitely cemented that idea with her childish, phallic drawing . “ the hickey would be far more enjoyable an action than the crutches , BUT that would mean involving a third person in your-- well now , OUR scheme . less people means a lesser chance of getting caught and as much as i LOVE getting into trouble with you , i’m desperate to avoid this weekend’s races . potato sacks do absolutely NOTHING for my figure . ” she quips before grinning excitedly at sienna’s newest plan ; surely no one would question these two wrecking university property and getting hurt while doing so , it’s in their nature . “ alright , now THAT’S a viable plan. i see you decided to wear your thinking cap today and we’re both better for it . now let’s go find those crutches before someone who actually NEEDS them takes ‘em away from us ! ”

the sounds of charcoal pencil scribbling away on thick textured paper fill the surrounding area where isla sits as she watches the few men practicing out in the field intently. blind contour drawings fill the page as she focuses in on a particular player-- the sophomore goalie to be exact. her warm, chocolate brown eyes stay fixated on him well after they finish their scrimmage, closing her sketchbook to stand up and walk over to him as he’s packing up. isla quickly makes her way behind rashad and stands on the tips of her toes to cheekily place her hands over his eyes. “ guess who ? ” she asks in sing-song voice, a smile on her lips as she teasingly messes with him. “ answer correctly and i’ll give you a prize ! ”

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐘𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐔𝐍 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐒 sharply down his back, many would be waking up to sun burns and ungodly tan lines tomorrow. his shirt hangs over his shoulder, beginning to dry - his canoe had tipped over during the race and he was now taking a break and letting himself dry off before joining in on another race or game. while some of the volunteers opted not to join in, roo was more than eager to compete. he takes a seat on the grass, taking a lengthy sip from his water bottle, watching them set up for the next three-legged race round. he notices someone a few feet away from him , “ – having FUN yet ? ” the sarcasm is laced in his tone, though it’s teasing at best . “ heard someone SPIKED the drinks over in the cafeteria – you been over there yet ? it would EXPLAIN that last round that just HAPPENED . ”

isla truly didn’t understand why this bonding event has to occur over the entirety of the weekend. these couple of days are typically reserved for time spent away from her teammates and being forced to participate in the races didn’t sit right with her. not to mention some of the activities are physically draining and the harsh wyoming sun didn’t help in the least bit. in fact, isla is quick to remove her sweaty top to provide her body a much needed cool down. she even places the shirt against the prickly green grass to lie down on top of it while in her sports bra and shorts to rest for as long as she could manage. feeling absolutely exhausted, she doesn’t even bother looking at the person speaking to her-- not needing to anyway as the voice is beyond recognizable. “ fun is a very STRONG word for what i’m feeling right now, ” she replies monotonously, not in the best mood to be speaking with her ex. however, at his next comment isla perks up slightly and lifts up slightly to rest on her forearms, glancing up at him. “ alright if i wasn’t having fun before then i DEFINITELY will now. how confident are you with this information ? ”

“ 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐀 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐌𝐘 𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐊 ? ” a smirk littered with mirth slips onto the girl’s features like a signature. she’d raided the first aid room, sifting through band aids, gauze, rubbing alcohol and various other medical supplies in search for the neck brace that she now sported – and was very much not needed. she pushes her cherry red sunglasses into tousled dark locks as she holds up a lip gloss and pink marker , “ choose your POISON , ” she dangles both in either hand before letting out a laugh that floats around the camp to dance with the today’s soundtrack. she leans forward slightly, voice going down an octave into a loud whisper , “ does it LOOK believable ? say yes and i’ll let you have a sip from my FLASK . ”

isla giggles mischievously as she grabs the lip gloss from the girl’s hand, quickly removing the fluffy wand to swipe the clear liquid across her voluptuous pink lips. her tongue swiftly swipes across to taste the strawberry flavored glaze that now lay on her mouth, nodding her head in response to sienna’s first question. “ god, i’m PISSED i didn’t think of this first. do you have anything else on you that i can use ? ” she asks while replacing the wand into the tube of gloss to return to her friend. isla stares at her critically, her eyes scanning her neck and cringing at the half-ass job sienna did. “ as much as i want a drink right now, i would be doing you a disservice by not telling you how SHITTY this looks. ” she snatches the pink marker from sienna’s hand to pull the cap off and lean forward, resting her elbow on her shoulder to scribble all over the cheerleader’s neck. after a minute of marking it terribly, isla pulls away and laughs at her shoddy work, “ okay so maybe this isn’t one of your best ideas. girl, you’re gonna need a REAL bruise on your neck to make people believe you need this damn brace ! ”
