i've decided to put this blog onto hiatus for the time being as i haven't really had the muse over here lately. i don't want to force myself, nor do i want the people i'm writing with to have to wait endlessly for me -- if you want to drop our threads during my absence, i completely understand. i will be back ; i just need a little break!

eyes try to peer around him out of curiosity of what's so captured his attention during her absence - though her attention is quick to return to him when he speaks. "yeah?" lips quirk, satisfied with the approving look he sends her. evelyn wants to protest - insist she has groceries to put away and things to prep before they eat, but it's a lie. just another normal activity that's been ripped from them ; one she tries not to think about as she pads for him before shooting him an amused look and closing her eyes. "okay, eyes are closed. what has so drawn your attention today, hm?"

hearing this only made his jaw tick several times with irritability. "and i would assume they both stormed off in a huff, conveniently leaving their chores for everyone else to pick up and handle?" the once sickeningly sweet couple had lost their sweetness, growing toxic and manipulative to those around them in the months that had passed since they'd all crash landed. it hadn't taken long for any of them to figure out the tactics, yet they'd yet to do anything terribly drastic about it. "been cooler in the mornings the last few days. think we'll be heading into fall soon."

"what, you fancy a trip into town?" she quips, corners of her mouth turning up as she pads across the porch to stand beside him and look at the yard. there were times evelyn considered asking him if they could move. somewhere more purposefully remote. pack up all the perishables they could in some moving trucks and settling into a remote cabin on a lake or beach house along the coast. at least then, the lack of people might feel less noticeable. "besides, i actually like that bottle of wine, so it might have been a somewhat selfish act wrapped to look selfless," a chuckles escapes her as dark hues turn out to look at the yard. "thinking about starting some sort of project?"

the breath that had been trapped in her throat since that scream echoed through the woods releases at the knock at the door, tension in her shoulders disappearing as she practically slouches forward in relief. "asshole, trying to scar us like this," she mumbles to the girl beside her - the pair of them exchanging uneasy smiles as the door is opened by another.

there is a moment of silence between alex stopping the head of their friend with his foot before all hell seems to break loose. the person at the door is slamming it shut, loudly asking 'what the fuck' repeatedly as the girl beside emma is screaming bloody murder - yet all emma can manage to do is stare down wide eyed at the head, not fully believing what she's seeing. shaky steps are taken forward - fingers clawing at jack's arm as if to drag him away. "we have to call the cops," she eventually manages to choke out.

"wow. calling your best friend a charity case? that's low, even for you, callie," rae teased as she started closing up the register, checking her totals against what the computer displayed. "wait, are you serious? you actually got leyla to come out tonight? we better move fast before she changes her mind and packs it in for the night." honestly, a girl's night sounded amazing and what better way to celebrate the end of the week than with her two best friends. though rae would never admit it out loud, she secretly hoped things might become more between the three of them.

"i just call it like i see it," she quips back with a grin over her shoulder. it doesn't take long to get things organized - not when rae tended to maintain such a tidy shop as it was. laughing, her head dips into a nod. callie wouldn't blame leyla for not wanting to go out ; not when her days off seemed far and few in between and most were spent working at the bar the trio tended to frequent. "that i did. it took bribing her with the promise of going out for drunchies later. i think she specifically requested the fries from that one vendor." not that callie could blame her - they were mouthwateringly good. "alright, lets hurry then. lord knows she's already there and counting the minutes she's alone as an excuse to leave us."

snorts, head tipping back as she laughs, a soft, playfound sound laced with disbelief. "god, your delusional is so consistent, it's actually impressive." honeyed gaze returns to him, manicured fingers tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. " yeah? you really think you're gonna find someone who wants to marry you? " she's curious now, maybe even a little jealous, but she'll never admit to it. she'd rather die anyway. " are you even seeing anyone ? last time i checked, your longest commitment was to that overpriced cologne you bathe in," her manicured brows lift, daring him to push back, but her smirk is already curling like smoke at the corners of her lips.

the only one delusional here was here, but stefan hardly felt like bickering back and forth with her endlessly about it. "don't act so surprised that someone might be genuinely interested in me," he chuckles, still firmly under the belief that while they had a seemingly hate-filled relationship, no sane person would enter into their little bet without come sort of ulterior motive. "here i was thinking you stalked my social media on the regular - consider me shocked. i am seeing someone." casually. very casually. extremely casually actually. but those were the nitty gritty details he only need skate around. "seven months and counting." monica had made it more than clear she wasn't interested in anything serious. "fairly certain every time you see me, you lean in, not away, so it can't be that my taste in cologne is that bad."

knows it's a lot cause. there's nothing he can say to change her mind. he still tries, tough. "yeah," murmurs quietly. doesn't flinch as she wipes the cut, but his jaw clenches a little tighter. not from pain, but from the closeness of them, from everything he can't say. he's never been good at this, at voicing the parts of him that feel too exposed. but when it comes to her, words tend to claw their way out wether he wants them to or not. "you care," he mutters, "you see the worst in people and you still try to something good. me ? i gave up on that a long time ago."

if she weren't so close to him, she might have missed the little telltale signs of discomfort. they're enough for send softly spoken apologies dropping from her lips - ones leyla is certain he'll brush away. blowing out a breath, she takes half a step back, tilting his head so he's forced to look up at her as she continues to blot away at the little cuts and forming bruises. "i'm not better," she murmurs, brow furrowing as she looks at him. "not by a long shot. and oh please. do you know how many people would call me foolish for that? tell me that i give too much of myself to people who don't deserve it? to some its a positive, others a negative. besides, you care about people plenty."

He didn’t speak right away. The rhythm of her voice ⸻ so casual, so certain ⸻ cut through the hum of the stream and into him like a blade she didn’t know she carried. There was something about the way she said it, the quiet familiarity of it, like she had stopped bracing for his anger, like she’d learned him. He wasn’t sure when that had started to happen.

❝Then I must be losing my touch,❞ he muttered, the corners of his mouth lifting, just faintly. Not quite a smile, but the shape of one, worn and guarded.

He stepped down toward the water’s edge, slow and steady, like he was mindful not to startle the moment. His broad frame cast a long shadow over the moss and stone, and still, she didn’t flinch. Just kept scrubbing, calm and focused, as though she’d always been part of this land, as though she hadn’t been brought here in chains.

❝We finished early. Weather held longer than expected. And the others can handle what’s left without me breathing down their necks.❞ His tone was even, but the way he watched her wasn’t. There was something sharpened in his gaze ⸻ focused, intent ⸻ like he was still trying to make sense of the fact that she hadn’t run, hadn’t crumbled, hadn’t cursed him to the gods the way he’d once expected her to.

At her offer, something in his jaw ticked. His pride told him to refuse it. He didn’t need her care. Didn’t ask for softness. But there was something in the way she said it that made it difficult to ignore, the way her voice bent, not with submission, but with something steadier. Something earned. ❝No.❞ His voice was low, but sure. ❝There’s no need. Not tonight. I didn’t come looking for food.❞ A pause, heavy as iron between them. Then— ❝Just wanted to see how you were doing.❞

It wasn’t poetic. It wasn’t careful. But it was the truth. And in Caelan’s world, that was something rarer than peace.

once, ophelia had thought he moved like a predator - steps sure, silent and stalking. it was the sort of thing that had turned her spine to steel and caused muscles to bunch in anticipation. only time and familiarity had worn away at such reactions. glancing up at him from beneath her lashes to catch the ghost of a smile that threatens to curl at his lips - small as it may be - ophelia considers it a victory. satisfaction curls around her expression, impossible to hide as she shoots him a knowing look before returning to her task. "or i simply have grown so familiar with you that i've come to recognize the pattern of your footfalls," she quips back with a gentle hum.

they all suspected the weather would break at some point - darkening clouds hovering just on the horizon and creeping closer by the minute. perhaps it had been foolish to venture out to do the chores as she did, but it was next to impossible to keep herself from doing so - not when the sun shone and the warmth not hugged the day. "so you come to breath down my neck instead?" she questions, tone lilting on a tease.

not looking for food? brows furrow, curious if she's missed some gossip amongst the others about him dining elsewhere, but the thought flicker and fades at his next statement. something about it causes warmth to ooze through her veins and ophelia squirms in place. it's unfamiliar - that level of care. her mother too busy caring for the plethora of children she'd born and father uncaring about any who were not males. "i am peaceful." last article of clothing washed, she moves to ring out the excess water, standing from her crouched position. "this is a sort of freedom i was not granted at home." odd, how she'd been his captive, held within chains and she was considering herself free. "if the weather held, i thought i might swim before i returned," she admits.

A soft sound left her throat, somewhere between a hum and a breath, as she let her weight shift fully upright. Her hair was mussed, lips still pink from sleep, one bare shoulder slouched out beneath the hoodie that swallowed her frame. She blinked once at Roman, then again at Asher’s retreating back, as if his tension had left a trail she could still feel sinking into the floorboards.

❝No trouble,❞ she murmured finally, voice still honey-thick with the remnants of sleep, but steady now. ❝Bar got quiet around one.❞ Fingertips brushed absently over a fold in the hoodie sleeve, like she was grounding herself there, like fabric could account for the way the room had shifted just slightly. She stretched her legs out, knees knocking together like a kid too long curled up, toes pressing against the edge of the rug before she glanced up at Roman again.

She glanced toward the kitchen then, eyes catching the movement, the sound of the fridge opening. ❝He alright?❞ she asked, low, but not whispered. Just enough weight behind it that it didn’t sound like nothing. Just enough tenderness that it couldn’t be mistaken for anything else.

And then, quieter still, like maybe it was a secret between them: ❝You both come back in one piece. But that doesn’t always mean whole.❞ She pulled her legs up beneath her again and tucked the hoodie tighter around her frame, voice folding soft as cotton. ❝Figured I’d wait up. Just in case you didn’t want to walk into silence.❞

dark hues track after the other man as he moves through the space. others would never have spotted anything wrong - this was often just how asher was, but he and winnie? the signs and symptoms were there. releasing a sigh, his attention turns back to their girl with a quirk of his lips. lighter than he feels. "good. surprising it got quiet so early, but guess you had us out and causing trouble elsewhere," he teases softly. "he'll be fine. just a tough night - prospect caused more trouble than they were worth with a rival. had to clean up the mess and it... wasn't pleasant." usually these sorts of things didn't bother either man to this extent, but roman suspected the kid reminded asher of himself at that age.

a tick of tension loosens from his shoulders at the confirmation, another when there's two beers dangling between his digits. "you know we'd have gotten patched up before we came back if we needed," he remarks, turning on his heels to trek back in the direction of the two - offering roman the cold beverage with a nod. "didn't have to do that sweetheart. always appreciate seeing your pretty face, but i also like seeing it tucked safely away in my bed."

this couldn’t be it, could it? was she just stuck here until she passed on? was there any way to contact the outside world? would she ever see her family again? rae’s thoughts spiraled, a whirlwind of questions and dread that made it hard to focus. the male’s voice faded into the background as she got lost in her own head, panic dulling her senses. "i guess i’ll go with you since you’re already a familiar face." she still had no idea what was going on, but sticking close to someone who seemed to understand this place felt like the safest option. "i’m guessing everyone has a job to do around here? what use do you guys have for someone who owns a bookstore?"

even if he were unable to see it, aleksei knew what came next. the woman across from him would either bow to the potential of this new reality and agree to hide away somewhere until morning, or she'd resist, stay out after dark fell and no one would see her again. despite the number of times he's watched it transpire, there is still a feeling of relief when she agrees. shoulders raise into a shrug at the question - pushing his empty plate away and raising to stand. calling out his thanks to the waitress and cook alike, aleksei tilts his head back toward the front of the diner and leads the woman outside. "you're thinking two dimensionally. bookstore owner and that's it. but that comes with all sorts of skills, doesn't it? we try to find things that play on someones strengths. and hey, you could always start a book club."

it may have only been a stint of a few years, but of course dante wasn't exactly proud of his time in jail. the shady things he had gotten involved in with his club had been few; and yet it still landed him here. walking past those gates, dressed in the slacks and white dress shirt he had arrived in, dante was certain there was no one waiting for him on the other side. his eyes were down on his phone, quickly finding the contact for his older brother—the corporate type, straight arrow, the CEO his parents wished dante had become, too. only after he's pressed the call button does he look up. there's only a few cars in the parking lot, seemingly happy reunions happening beside most of them. except for one, where a woman sits on the hood of the car—alone. he's about to divert his attention when her face registers in his brain. years—it had been years since they had spoken, let alone seen each other. before dante can process that he's moved, he's standing a mere ten feet away from her. the woman a much younger and more naive version of himself thought was the love of his life. dante pulls the phone a few inches away from his ear. "what are you doing here?"

palms against the hood as she leans back slightly to bask in the creeping warmth of spring, hues watch the gates with curiosity. its been years since they've seen one another and she'd heard about his incarceration by sheer chance. perhaps it's the lingering feelings of youth that led her to dig into the reasons of why and how long - and while she'd initially had no intentions of showing up today, it had been a spur of the moment decision. zelda wasn't even sure he'd recognize her - and if someone else had been in the parking lot waiting for him, she would have gotten back in her car and driven away without a second look.

"i always was your get out of jail free card," she notes, referencing something from a long-forgotten youth. lips quirk into some semblance of a smile, hues flickering from the phone in his hand to his gaze once more. "want a ride?"
