Deviant Ollam is runs a physical security penetration testing company called The Core Group; in a flat-out amazing, riveting presentation from the 2017 Wild West Hackin’ Fest, Ollam – a master lockpicker – describes how lockpicking is a last resort for the desperate, while the wily and knowledgeable gain access by attacking doors and locks with tools that quickly and undetectably open them.

Ollam’s techniques are just laugh-out-loud fantastic to watch: from removing the pins in hinges and lifting doors away from their high-security locks to sliding cheap tools between doors or under them to turn thumb-levers, bypass latches, and turn handles. My favorite were the easy-exit sensors that can be tricked into opening a pair of doors by blowing vape smoke (or squirting water, or releasing a balloon) through the crack down their middle.

But more than anything, Ollam’s lecture reminds me of the ground truth that anyone who learns lockpicking comes to: physical security is a predatory scam in which shoddy products are passed off onto naive consumers who have no idea how unfit for purpose they are.

When locksport began, locksmiths were outraged that their long-held “secret” ways of bypassing, tricking and confounding locks had entered the public domain – they accused the information security community of putting the public at risk by publishing the weaknesses in their products (infosec geeks also get accused of this every time they point out the weaknesses in digital products, of course).

But the reality is that “bad guys” know about (and exploit) these vulnerabilities already. The only people in the dark about them are the suckers who buy them and rely on them.

So when Ollam reveals that thousands of American cop cars, fleet cars, and taxis can all be unlocked and started using a shared key that you can literally buy for a few bucks at Home Depot, or that most elevators can be bypassed with a similarly widely available key, or that most file cabinets and other small locks can be opened with a third key, or that most digital entry systems can be bypassed in seconds with a paperclip (or another common physical key), he’s doing important (and hilarious!) work.

He’s such an engaging speaker and the subject matter is nothing short of fantastic. There are a hundred heist novels in this talk alone. It’s definitely my must-watch for the week.

In addition to being pastors, my parents were both also professional teachers. My mom has a master's in education.

I still wish I wasn't homeschooled.

Like, I run into folks now who get super excited when I tell them I was homeschooled because they're thinking about homeschooling if they ever have a kid and want intel, and they get super grumpy and dismissive and defensive when I tell them how absolutely debilitating it was socially, and that it really wasn't worth it just to be a year ahead in math.

And part of that is this sense that homeschooling is an opportunity for you to customize your child. It's usually an extension of a broader fantasy that that's what parenthood is about. That you can minmax your child's stats and construct the perfect build, and the only reason everyone's all screwed up is just that nobody sat down and really micromanaged their child's education enough. Other teachers (and peers, for that matter) might steer them in directions you don't want.

Even when done well, homeschooling is about removing those outside influences so you can control their environment and prioritize your own goals for them. It's a magnet for people with narcissism and control issues as a result, it's a magnet for fundamentalists, but it's also a magnet for idealists. Sometimes it even works out great, hell, there are people who for accessibility reasons will likely be taught far better at home. But that's more a "lesser of two evils" situation.

One person cannot be smarter in every single subject than every single teacher that the kid would ever have. They can't singlehandedly replace the socialization, the networking, the mentorship, and the life experiences. And to think that they can borders on megalomania.

I want everyone to look at how The New York Times (paywall-bypass link) covered this event - specifically this sentence:

“I will no longer be complicit in genocide,” a man says in the video, echoing language that opponents of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza have used to describe the war.

Read it. Read it again. Think of all of the ways in which they could have presented his statement. Read it again.

Every single Language Arts teacher should use this sentence to teach students how to read for bias.

In case anyone is curious:

De-personification - referring to Aaron Bushnell as just "a man" in an article specifically about him and his actions.

Passive framing - he's not making a statement, he's "echoing" things other people have said, thus decreasing the impact of his statement.

Referring to people who are against the genocide in Palestine as "opponents", implying that there is an equal conflict between two parties, instead of, you know, a genocide.

Specifically naming Israel and not Palestine

Describing the genocide as a war, again implying a conflict and not a colonial state murdering civilians.

Finally, the overall tone of this sentence is one which SPECIFICALLY distances both the reader and the actions of Aaron Bushnell from the genocide in Palestine. "Have used" being past tense instead of present tense especially stands out to me, because it, again, implies something which is not currently occurring, and separates Aaron Bushnell from the category of people who are opposing the genocide in Palestine.

The media is not impartial, not any media, anywhere, ever. The key is to be able to identify any bias and decide what that tells you about the statements contained within.
