Nights at the Silver Slipper were never something that passed by quickly. After almost a year of dancing there, you had fallen into a routine. Rush in, change into your outfit and do your makeup, go on stage and perform, come back with a drink to cool your overheating body. Some of the girls you were close to and others you weren’t. But ever since Rue joined Alamo’s team, you had naturally gravitated towards her. She’d zoom through the main floor just standing by in case one of the customers needed anything. Then her eyes started drifting to you whenever it was your turn to perform. Every time you spun around the pole, you made sure to look at her with a soft and inviting smile. Your expression was different from when you looked at the patrons compared to how you gazed at Rue.
The other dancers caught on and began to tease you, insinuating that you had a soft spot for the new girl but you’d shush them away. Yet, every time Rue passed through the dressing room, you’d lock eyes. Rue never looked away and slowed her stride to flash you a half grin before she disappeared in the back office. One late night as all the dancers had left, you spotted Rue talking on her phone. Not that you were trying to eavesdrop but you overhead her sharing information about the side business that Alamo runs. When Rue walked out and saw you were still there, she had realized her cover was blown. She begged and pleaded that you not say anything, sharing that she was in a tough position being an informant for the DEA.
What Rue didn’t know was you weren’t like these other dancers who worked for Alamo with blind loyalty. Ever since two of your dancer friends disappeared without an explanation or trace, you knew that man had something to do with it. You had it out for him since then and started praying on his downfall. This was the perfect opportunity to get the ball rolling so you began to help Rue investigate.
As Rue’s investigation partner, you started paying attention long enough to know everybody's secrets. Who hid “special candy” in their lockers, who stole the other’s Mac Lipliner, and who had a habit of not minding their business. Which was exactly why you knew Magaick was becoming an issue.
"She's been watching again." You leaned against the bathroom sink, arms folded as you watched Rue through the mirror. She stood beside you in a tank and baggy jeans, a hand shoved into her pants pocket, pretending to check her phone while she listened.
"Y/n. She doesn’t know anything. Trust me." Rue said.
"I trust you." You sighed and turned to face her. “We just have to be careful.”
"Am I not discrete?" Rue stepped back and spun around for you.
You rolled your eyes. "If you call that discrete then…No." A grin tugged at the corner of Rue's mouth. Over the past few weeks, you've gotten used to these conversations. When Rue first started showing up around the Silver Slipper, she'd been quiet, awkward, and suspicious of everybody. Now, she was still awkward but she started trusting you. Even taking a step further to pull you aside and check in with you.
Rue finally slipped her phone away. "Are you okay, though?" She asked softly, taking a step closer. “Alamo’s not making you…you know?” Rue shrugged, not wanting to finish her sentence but she knew some of the other ladies were finding ways to make more cash during their shift. It’d hurt her if she knew you were too because unbeknownst to you, Rue had a thing for you.
"No, nothing like that.” You smiled at Rue’s concern and it looked like she relaxed at that. "I’m okay.” You muttered tenderly as your eyes darted between Rue’s.
"Good." She grinned then shifted on her feet. Her expression was warm. You giggled at how sweet she was on you. The sound echoed through the nearly empty bathroom. A refreshing interaction that you rarely had working at Silver Slipper. For a moment, things felt at ease then you heard a faint squeak. Barely audible beneath the distant bass thumping through the walls. Your eyes shifted toward the row of stalls as Rue kept talking, completely unaware.
"...and Alamo's already breathing down my neck because-" Another sound, like cautious movement or someone shifting their weight. Your gaze trailed down to the floor seeing a black heel drop. Instantly recognizing the foot, you knew it belonged to the nosiest dancer, Magick.
You had noticed her lingering nearby earlier. Watching you like you were sworn enemies. Trying to figure out why you and Rue spent so much time together. The problem was that Magick didn't trust Rue and unfortunately, she wasn't stupid.
Quietly staring at the stall door, Rue’s brows knitted together as she followed your gaze. "What?"
You had approximately three seconds to make a decision because suddenly you heard the unmistakable click of a stall lock. Someone preparing to come out and someone who had definitely heard enough to start asking questions. Your pulse kicked up into overdrive. Rue was still confused as to why you looked so worked up. Still standing there completely oblivious that her cover was about to be blown. So you did the first thing that came into your head. You grabbed her shirt and kissed her.
Rue froze, every muscle in her body stiffened. For half a second she looked like her brain had simply stopped functioning. Then the stall door exploded open with Magick storming out.
"Ha! I knew you bitches were snitc-" She stopped dead in her tracks staring in confusion because instead of catching two people exchanging information...She'd caught you and Rue making out beside the sinks.
You were definitely kissing Rue, meanwhile, Rue appeared to have suffered a complete neurological malfunction. Her eyes were wide and she looked seconds away from passing out. You deepened the kiss with a long hum just enough to sell it. Magick's jaw nearly hit the floor.
"Oh my God." You pulled away dramatically and wiped the corners of your mouth, putting on your best startled face. "Magick!" Rue blinked a few times trying to figure out what just happened. All she could do was stare at you looking completely dazed. "What are you doing in here?" You demanded.
Magick pointed accusingly. "I-" Her finger jabbed toward Rue. "You two were fooling around!"
Rue finally found her voice. "Wha-" Unfortunately that was all she got out.
You immediately stepped in front of her. "No we weren't."
Magick frowned and folded her arms. "I just saw you!"
"You didn’t see anything." You shrugged and tried to appear nonchalant to piss Magick off even more and it seemed to work.
"Lying ass!" She yelled and flew her hands in the air. You glanced at Rue and you regretted it because she still looked like the happiest idiot you'd ever met. A dopey grin had started spreading across her face. The sight nearly made you laugh so you quickly looked away.
"Magick…" You started firmly. "Were you spying on us?"
She paused, her eyes wandered around the room like she was embarrassed. "I was not."
"You were hiding in a bathroom stall." You pointed out. Magick’s mouth opened and closed. She couldn’t find a proper comeback to get her out of the situation. "You kicked the door open."
"I thought-" She tried to explain but you cut her off.
"You thought wrong." Magick sputtered.
Rue chose that exact moment to finally understand what had happened. You watched realization flash across her face. Everything had finally clicked into place. "Oh." Her grin somehow got bigger. "Oh." She dragged out. You shot her a warning look silently telling her to not ruin this. Rue bit the inside of her cheek. Failing miserably at hiding her smile.
Of course Magick noticed. "Wait." She pointed at Rue again. "You were going to fuck her." Magick stated with a smugged expression.
"What?" Rue's voice cracked then she glanced back at you and nervously chuckled.
"Don't play stupid. I know what I saw." She wiggled her eyebrows like she got the juiciest piece of gossip.
"I-I" Rue stuttered.
"You were!" Rue immediately tried to stop smiling which only made it worse. You pressed your lips together, fighting for your life not to laugh.
Magick threw her hands into the air. "Lo sabía!" Then she stormed out. The bathroom door slammed behind her.
Silence had engulfed the room for two long seconds then Rue looked at you. "You kissed me."
You groaned. "Please don't make this weird."
"I'm not making it weird." She raised her hands in defense but that dopey grin never left her lips
"Rue." You tried to argue.
"You kissed me." She repeated.
Huffing a breath out as you turned to look in the mirror to check your lipgloss. "I panicked. It was an accident."
"An accident?" Rue said in a teasing tone.
"Yes." Your eyes snapped to hers through the mirror.
Rue nodded thoughtfully. "Right."
"Right." You tried to recover but Rue nodded slowly. The smile stretching wider causing you to roll your eyes in response. You pointed toward the door. "Come on."
"What?"
"She’s probably telling on us." Rue looked mildly disappointed and that was somehow worse. You grabbed her wrist pulling her toward the exit. "Move…"
"Yes, ma'am." The second you stepped into the dressing room, chaos erupted. Apparently Magick had wasted absolutely no time. Every dancer in the room turned toward you then toward Rue and then back toward you.
Someone wolf-whistled, another dancer nearly fell off a chair laughing.
"I knew it!"
"You owe me twenty dollars!"
"When were you two gonna tell us?"
Rue stopped walking and you could actually see panic setting in. Which only encouraged everybody. More whistles, more cheering, and more giddy laughter.
Magick stood in the center of the room looking thoroughly pleased. "There!" She announced. Everybody looked at Rue and she looked like she wanted the earth to swallow her whole. Magick pointed dramatically, "They were doing it in the bathroom!"
The room exploded. Half the dancers cheered and the other half started shouting questions. You buried your face in your hands.
Then Rue spoke very quietly. "Ladies..." The room fell silent. You looked up. Rue rubbed the back of her neck. "She kissed me...that’s all." The reaction was immediate. The loudest whoop yet echoed through the room.
"No way!"
"Get her!"
"You got game, girl!"
You wanted to disappear. Rue looked equally horrified. Yet still wearing that stupid, adorable grin.
Magick looked unconvinced. "You kissed her?"
You pointed helplessly. "I slipped! It was an accident." Nobody believed you.
A dancer near the mirrors laughed. "Sure you did."
Another chimed in. "That's what they all say." More teasing ensued and the entire room had turned against you.
You looked toward Rue in desperation and that's when it happened. The noise around you faded. It was enough for you to notice the way Rue was looking at you. Her amusement was still there mixed with gratitude too. But there was something else now. Something neither of you had addressed directly. It dawned on you that before she'd understood why you'd kissed her, she hadn't wanted you to stop.
Your chest fluttered when Rue's smile softened. She wasn't embarrassed from being caught anymore. Neither of you spoke, you didn’t need to but the silent conversation happened anyway.
Thank you.
I know.
That was crazy.
Yeah.
You kissed me though.
I'd do it again.
Something within you stirred because the truth was simple. You would kiss her again without an excuse or hesitation. The cheering around you eventually returned. Someone tossed a beauty blender sponge across the room while another dancer demanded details. Magick gave up entirely and stalked away muttering under her breath.
Neither you nor Rue paid them much attention because even within the ridiculous disaster in the bathroom, something had changed between the two of you. It was a possibility neither of you had acknowledged before.
Rue finally glanced away at first a faint blush coloring her cheeks. You smiled despite yourself. "Still an accident?" She asked.
You laughed. "Don't push your luck, Rue." Her grin returned instantly.
The dressing room erupted again and you should’ve shied away but the look in Rue’s eyes reassured you that she wasn’t going to let this kiss be a one time thing.
