I meant to post about this days ago but every time I think about it my brain goes on the fritz. So at the end of the training montage in episode three, where Sam and Miguel kiss as they’re leaving the dojo, the part to reveal Daniel and Johnny, who pause to shake hands and fist bump. And this shot comes after a montage of scenes that specifically shows Daniel and Johnny growing closer (combining their techniques and methods of teaching; eating lunch together etc).
So is this a kind of coded message? It immediately feels like Daniel and Johnny should kiss after Sam and Miguel. But they don’t. Instead they fist bump. Like it’s a way for them to touch, safely, within the confines of their dynamic as co-senseis and friends. As an acceptable way for two grown men to touch each other. And I wouldn’t think anything of it, if it wasn’t preceded by this kiss. A kiss between Daniel’s daughter and Johnny’s quasi-son. So in this instance are Sam and Miguel stand-ins for Daniel and Johnny? Is this a way to signal to the audience that Daniel and Johnny want to kiss, or that they have kissed, or that they thought about kissing, or that they will kiss? Why show a kiss between a LaRusso and an adopted Lawrence immediately before Daniel and Johnny touch, if it’s not to symbolise something like this?

“I don’t think I will fit in with you and your friends,” Danielle says as she drapes the black dress in front of her. She already took off her bralette, as Jenny had asked. The witch costume has cups sewn in, she assured. They are big and Danielle doubts her small chest could even fill half of them. She doesn’t say it, though. “What with your whole ‘sexy’ theme.”
“I already told you the theme isn’t sexy,” Jenny admonishes as she grabs the hat she left on the bed. “I’m an ‘undead’ pop-star.”
“Just say zombie,” Danielle grumbles. She tightens her hold over the black fabric, covering more of her chest. It’s nothing Jenny hasn’t seen, but she feels vulnerable in the orange lights.
Jenny is already in costume, her makeup done. It’s not even zombie-ish, just a little bit of purple under her eyes, complimenting the messy ponytail. Her shoulders and cleavage are bare and shine temptingly. Her breasts fill the shitty red dress easily, the fabric hugging every curve of Jenny’s body all tight and nice. The belt sits on her tiny waist snugly, and her athletic legs look amazing in the black fishnets she has going. If she wasn’t going for sexy, she was failing epicly.
Danielle turns, looking at herself sideways in the mirror. She is so slim compared to Jenny. Her own waist and hips are almost the same width. There’s no way she will fill a dress the way Jenny does. Danielle is not stupid, she saw the rest of the girls’ costumes. The ‘undead’ (just say zombie!) theme barely hanging by a thread. Dutch didn’t even pretend, and bought what looked like one of those nurse dresses they sell at lingerie stores. Danielle is sure she will break all the dress code rules, and won’t even be let in the school gym. But Diana Dutch never cares. Maybe that’s her plan, so she can ditch the dance and go straight to that college party she hasn’t shut up about.
Her thoughts stop when she feels the heat of Jenny’s body besides her, her arms moving to put the witch hat over Danielle’s short hair. She’s quiet, but her eyes are all attentive to all of Danielle’s movements.
“You’re gonna look so pretty and cute,” Jenny says. Danielle hopes her red cheeks are not visible in the dim lights of the room. Her chest flutters, even when she wishes the adjective Jenny had used was hot, or sexy, or attractive. All the things Danielle thinks Jenny is.
“I’m going to stand out so bad,” Danielle groans.
“You always do,” Jenny says, and the tone of her voice is pitched a little low. She already left the hat on her hair, four bobby pins helping along the way. “You always stand out.”
Danielle looks at their joint reflection in the mirror, their opposite looks, their different physiques. Jenny’s eyes are glued to Danielle’s, and she almost shivers as she feels the feather-light touch of Jenny’s fingers, which travel slowly from her shoulders to her waist. Danielle gulps when deft fingers pinch the waistband of the striped tights she already put on. Jenny fixes them, and then her hands disappear.
Danielle turns fully to the mirror, her skinny back to Jenny. She keeps her eyes on Jenny’s through the mirror, while she moves the dress to step inside it. Danielle only breaks eye-contact when she has to look down to make sure her legs go into the skirt, but she knows Jenny is still looking as she shimmies inside her costume.
In our front yard, only a few feet from our porch stood the grandest tree in town. It was a towering, beautiful copper beech tree. And on sunny days, I lived under its branches. Its roots were a fort for my soldiers and a corral for my horses. And I was the first on my block to climb high into its upper reaches, leaving behind a world that… I didn’t care for much already. And up near the top I had the wind in my face and I had all the dreaming room that you could want…
And I’m now giggling like an idiot. You’d think with the fanfic and Tolkien obsession, I’d have a nice and rather cool pic to post. No, I am ending up with this dim bulb from Animal Crossing Pocket Camp. Does this post mean I’m a furry now?
