As Obama calls for more gun control, let’s remember that UCC is a ‘gun-free’ zone
After the horrific shooting that took place at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, President Obama, as presidents often do after National tragedies, took to the airwaves to comfort a shocked and grieving nation. But, as is so often the case with this particular president, he couldn’t help but use the opportunity to call for more gun control (oh, and to talk about himself).
But there’s one little problem with the President’s narrative: UCC, like so many other campuses across the country, had very strict gun control. In fact, it was and is a “gun-free zone”. No weapons are allowed on campus. Did this fact stop the shooter? Nope. Did it stop good people from defending themselves? Yep.
Sadly, most Americans will never be presented with this reality. Rather, they’ll be inundated with calls for gun control and outrage about whatever this week’s Confederate Flag is. Case in point: An article by the far left blog “Think Progress” has already irroneously claimed (don’t click) that it is against the law for colleges in Oregon to declare themselves “gun free.” At the time I’m writing this, it’s the first result when searching for “Gun Free Zone” on Google. The problem? It’s simply not true. Don’t believe me? I was able to find this in about 5 minutes:
That’s the official “Student Code of Conduct” for Umpqua Community College.
“The following actions…are the types of misconduct for which students may be subject to disciplinary action. Possession…of firearms…”
Then there’s the President of the College:
Now, either both the UCC student code of conduct and the President of the college are wrong about campus rules or Think Progress is.
Wouldn’t you think that an organization with as many resources as Think Progress could get it right? I suspect they could, they just didn’t want to. They have an agenda and the narrative is all that matters. The problem is that these so-called “gun-free zones” literally create victims.
Take it from US Marshall Art Roderick:
“[The gunman] probably knew that the facility was a gun free facility, [which is] an easy target for these kinds of coward individuals. They know they’re not going to get any response unless they happen to run into security or a campus police officer.”
Look, bad people will always do bad things. That’s one of the perils that necessarily comes attached to free society. Knowing this, it is utterly senseless, nay immoral, to prevent good people from doing everything in their power to protect themselves when the inevitable bad thing happens to them.
