I think there has to be a balance between protecting your children from predators online and being a controlling helicopter parent. The choice isn’t between abuse by strangers and abuse by parents.
And yeah, online predation is very common. I was predated by an adult in an AOL chat room when I was 11 years old. I kinda wish my parents were a little more strict before that happened.
We can’t pretend as if the internet poses zero risk to children. That doesn’t mean we should support draconian measures meant to restrict adult political activities under the guise of protecting children. That also doesn’t mean we should reject parents keeping a watchful eye on their general activity.
