the day two heroes were born
kakashi, obito, and rin were perfectly set up to be konoha’s version of the nagato/konan/yahiko akatsuki but we’re not ready to have that conversation
i lied, yes we are
see, team minato literally represents konoha’s major flaws:
kakashi is the child soldier. the one who received no treatment or consideration for his obviously messed up mental health and trauma even as a little kid. he had to watch his father be shunned by the village he did nothing but protect to the point of suicide, leaving kakashi an orphan at five years old. they told him his father was worthless and when he drove himself into a corner everyone just watched until he was broken and angry enough to be sent to ANBU (aka the ‘gifted child with immense trauma should kill mercilessly as therapy’ program).
obito was the orphan who was never given enough attention. he wasn’t respected by his clan or his peers, and even though he only ever tried to be helpful and keep his spirits up he was told that he wouldn’t make it as a shinobi by almost everyone. and then when he finally did find a family amongst his teammates he had it all taken away when he was dragged off and manipulated by madara. when he saw konoha for what it was and tried to do something about it he was just turned into the villain and led on a wild goose chase after whatever nonsensical concept the moon-eye plan was.
rin was the sacrifice. the “will of fire.” she committed suicide when she was 13 because she thought it would protect the village that didn’t care about her or her friends. her death had no meaning and way too many holes in the story to have any reasonable impact beyond being a plot device for kakashi and obito’s inconsistent character arcs.
the three of them highlight all of the worst things about konoha, making them the perfect candidates for starting a resistance movement like akatsuki was originally intended to be. their lives were horribly messed up by a war they didn’t start but were forced to live through as children. (not to mention the fact that by the time they’re 13, they’re all ridiculously overpowered, between the mangekyo, mokuton, chidori, and isobu, so like. protagonist material).
can you imagine a story where they looked back at their experiences and used the anger and hardships they’d endured and decided to try and make a better world for naruto’s generation? how much shit wouldn’t have happened? itachi wouldn’t have been manipulated into killing his clan, naruto and sasuke wouldn’t have been left alone as orphans in horrible situations, and literally none of shippuden would have been canon. the story could have taken a turn that acknowledged the corruption of the shinobi system as seen through the eyes of those hurt by it who wanted to do something about it instead of diving into all of that ōstutsuki/reincarnation/six paths bullshit that didn’t make sense. the opportunity was right there. goddamnit.
Happy Mean Girls day :)
