My (unwanted) thoughts on Bunny’s character as one of his 2 fans.. sorry if this is worded-weird, or doesn’t make any sense, I was kinda just writing my thoughts down. Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions on it too (please)
I see a lot of people reducing his character to him just being a ‘follower’ which makes me SO upset 😔😔 .. Especially since I’m assuming that when they call him a ‘follower’ they mean a ‘subservient, lack of independent thought’ way, and not in the ‘person who backs a leader’ way
When it’s pretty obvious one of the main reasons he idolized Barnes the way he did was because he was an authority figure powerful enough to let him do whatever he wanted, without getting him in trouble. And all Bunny had to do for that protection was be loyal to him, and help him stay in charge. His behavior, and *majority* of his actions don’t even come from a place of loyalty/fear of Barnes, or because he views Barnes as some omnipotent, god who could think for him… he simply just likes being able to do whatever he wants, without being punished for it, and Barnes just happens to be the guy letting him do that.
And, reducing his character to just him being a ‘follower’ does SUCH an injustice, as it implies that if you were to get rid of the leader (especially a corrupt one, like Barnes) the behavior stops,,, when Bunny’s lack of humanity, and sadism is shown to be self-generating, (Especially if assuming vietnam did not create his sadism, it just allowed it to grow) as he is also never seen being intimidated, or coerced by Barnes into his behavior, which leads me to believe that he would act similar regardless of if he were supporting his authority or not.
He did whatever he wanted, while very deliberately attaching himself to an authority that didn’t punish his behavior. Bunny, in the simplest wording, was an already bad person who saw an opportunity and took it.
On a very unrelated note, I will never stop pushing the Bunny and Azar (The Things They Carried) friendship!!! Which I must mention every time I talk about either of them!
I want to make sure to clarify that this is not me diminishing, or ignoring any of his very deplorable actions!!!
