Moments in Motion Study: 001 "Life is like a boxing match. Defeat is declared not when you fall, but when you refuse to stand again." When I think about what it takes to be a champion, what comes to mind is the determination and perseverance one must have to overcome the obstacles and hurdles on your path. Just like boxing, life often throws you hardships in combinations. And though you may be able to bob, weave and dodge some of them, it's always the ones that land that hit the hardest. A true champion rolls with the punches and when they go down, it's that same determination and perseverance that allows them to get up again. #momentsinmotion #film #boxing #inspiration #motivation #filmmaker #life
At First Glance: Nadia Aboulhosn
At First Glance: Nadia Aboulhosn from Derrick Woodyard on Vimeo.
At First Glance is a videos series that will feature individuals who are creative, inspiring, or that I find to be interesting or amusing. This first video features well known fashion blogger and my good friend, Nadia Aboulhosn.
I've known Nadia for a few years and we've been talking about doing a project together but haven't been able to due to our schedules, locations, etc., until now. This video is a culmination of Nadia and I hanging out for three days ranting about nonsense, making butt jokes, and eating cupcakes and stuffed crust pizza. It's actually amazing that we accomplished anything. In the midst of all of this, I was able to have a conversation with Nadia which revealed her thoughts on her personal style, body image, and self confidence. Coupled with video that we were able to film on her rooftop in New York and at a photoshoot in New Jersey, this makes for an interesting piece that peers into the eyes of an upcoming fashion icon. This is Nadia Aboulhosn at first glance.
Mic Stew: Kill Whitey. The 2nd single off of Mic Stew's "Peaceworld" album and also the second video I had the opportunity to direct for this album. Check out the video and make sure to check out the album. https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/peaceworld/id622774765
Center City Jazz Festival 2013. Founded by my good friend and amazing musician, Ernest Stuart, the Center City Jazz Fest allowed patrons to hear great music in four different venues throughout the Center City area of Philadelphia. Showcasing some of the area's most talented jazz musicians, the festival was held in four of the city's premiere downtown venues for live music; Chris' Jazz Café, Time Restaurant, Fergie's Pub, & Milkboy. Find more information regarding the festival and additional photos on http://ccjazzfest.com/
Ghostface "Twelve Reasons to Die" Tour. Ghostface Killah recently released his 10th studio album entitled "Twelve Reasons to Die" which is a concept album in collaboration with Adrien Younge and executive produced by the RZA. The album is set in Italy in the 1960s and tells the story of Tony Starks, an enforcer for the DeLuca crime family. After an affair with the boss' daughter, Tony is murdered and his body is melted into 12 vinyls that, when played resurrect him as the Ghostface Killah. Ghost performed here in Philly at The Blockley with local talent opening up for him. True to form, the performance was enthralling and animated with a re-enacting of the album's storyline, complete with narration, costume changes, and of course the onstage resurrection of the Ghostface Killah.
During the summer I helped film a few scenes for an independent action movie titled "Dark Shield". Here's a quick edit I made from the footage I shot that day. Directed by Blake Brewer with principle cinematography by my good pal Mitch Martinez, this action film should be playing in theaters soon. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2321762/
A few months ago I had the opportunity to work with Omar Rada, founder of Proof NY, a clothing company out of New York that specializes in versatile clothing that breathes, stretches, has great cuts, and is waterproof. Here's the video I directed which shows off some of the fashion and functionality behind this brand. See more at http://proofny.com/
Here's another visual I directed for Philadelphia men's bespoke tailoring company, Commonwealth Proper. Featuring their new line of ready-to-wear shirts, this video briefly describes their roots in Philadelphia. Go to http://www.commonwealthproper.com/ to see more great clothing from these guys.
The first single off of my good friend and Redbull Freestyle champ Mic Stew's album Peaceworld. I directed this video "I'm not from Brooklyn", you can expect more videos and music coming soon. Stay updated and buy the album by visiting http://micstewartmusic.com/
The Love Story is a short documentary about the new renaissance of artists and creative minds in Philadelphia. Each person featured explains why they love their craft and their opinion on the new movement of artists in the city.
