If anyone else needs to watch tv as background noise while working on homework or paperwork or whatever...why? Why do we do this?

I mean I get roughly the same amount of work done as long as I’m focused, and I don’t even watch new tv. Like I just loop series and let the seasons pass me by. so why? I kinda think I’m subconsciously keeping time, but if anyone knows a legit reason that’d be cool to know.
