Many disabled people find the process of applying for disability benefits taxing and overly complicated, because it is, 

to remedy this I propose that all who apply for disability should be entitled to a caseworker outside of social security to help with the application process, and see them through it.

I currently trying to apply for benefits for the second time, but this time I do have a social worker person who is helping me with it and it really makes it so much better and more bearable.

Also, now that I’m on the topic, the first time I tried to apply, I was rejected because a doctor I had to go to examined me for 5 minutes and then disregarded everything the experts who have been following me for several years said and told me I didn’t qualify. Also he basically caused me to have a panic attack, but because of that I couldn’t answer his questions, which obviously meant there was nothing wrong…

Am social worker and you know what, the system is all around horrible. I’ve had doctors refusing to let me in alongside the person they had to check, despite knowing I’m their case worker. I’ve seen doctors with no psychiatric qualifications decide on the fate of people with psychiatric issues. It’s awful and honestly I could not imagine doing just that full time (I just work in psychiatry so I help people apply or reapply sometimes). It’s disheartening to see the system fail at its basic functions.

Here in the UK the government has literally set rejection quotas for the companies determining who should receive disability benefits (because of course we’ve privatised it), which means even in absolutely clear-cut cases assessors have just flat-out lied in their appraisals, my SO is currently awaiting a date for a tribunal hearing on her application because the application and first appeal have both completely ignored everything she’s said, the entire system is designed to be impossible for disabled people to navigate. It’s like Catch-22 - if you actually have the capacity to get through the process in a timely fashion you’re probably not all that disabled, but if you don’t go through the process you can’t need support all that badly.

And that’s just for benefits applications, not even starting on their fit-to-work assessments which once literally declared a dead person able to work.

Oh yeah, this one company called ATOS was given the contracts for Work Capability Assessments and at least 2000 people have died as a result, it’s truly awful. They no longer have the contracts but very little has changed.

Off the top of my head the short summary is that you have to regularly go to meetings at the job centre (how do you pay for the travel? ATOS doesn’t know, ATOS doesn’t care) and if you miss one they stop your benefits immediately and say “you’re not trying, so you must be fit for work, go fuck yourself” no matter the reason.

Stories I can currently recall include 1) a person who had a heart attack on the way to the meeting and got sanctioned, 2) a person who missed their meeting because they were at a job interview and got sanctioned (but didn’t get the job), 3) a person whose next of kin received the fit-for-work letter because said person was literally on their deathbed when deemed healthy enough to work. There are so, so many more like that and this government has so much blood on its hands.
