The Langs naming Wilbur Cross, a relatively minor character in the Hatchetfield universe: Yeah so it's a pun on 'double cross' but also a parody of Randall Flagg from The Stand - but also mayyybe a Charlotte's Web reference? Because of Webby's spider motifs? And it could even be a reference to Wilbur Whately from Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror! Plus its the most extra Southern-sounding name we could think of. 'Uncle Wiley' is a play on 'Uncle Sam', but it kind of sounds like a nickname for the devil as well. Is there any intentional meaning to the fact that 'Wiley' sounds like a Bottle Imp name? Guess you'll have to wait for NMT3 to find out! Did you know there's a type of spider called a Cross Orbweaver?
