Wow! It’s none other than a plains spadefoot toad [Spea bombifrons], a nervous little amphibian native to the prairie grasslands of the mid United States. These toads are often found near farms and open fields, but also venture onto roads at night for a better vantage point in which to spot insects. Images by Matthew Gruen.

Vietnamese Mossy Frog

Literally translating to ‘Nipple Skin’, the genus Theloderma is known for their unusual, bumpy texture. The Vietnamese mossy frog, Theloderma corticale, is found in northern Vietnam and possibly in China and adjacent Laos. The combination of the Vietnamese mossy frog’s green body coloration with black spots, tubercles and spines makes them look like a clump of moss, which they spend a large portion of their time pretending to be. They have large sticky pads on their toes and a soft underbelly. This species will curl into a ball when frightened, and play dead.
