The Land of No Men: Inside Kenya’s Women-Only Village
Only women are allowed to live in These villages. Julie Bindel visits different Kenyan villages that began as a refuge for survivors of sexual violence – and discovers its inhabitants are thriving in the single-sex community,
The village Umoja was founded in 1990 by a group of 15 women who were survivors of rape by local British soldiers. Umoja’s population has now expanded to include any women escaping child marriage, FGM (female genital mutilation), domestic violence and rape – all of which are cultural norms among the Samburu.
One of the unique features of the Umoja community is that some of the more experienced residents train and educate women and girls from surrounding Samburu villages on issues such as early marriage and FGM.

What feminism is and isn’t
I recently had a rather interesting conversation about feminism. The man I was talking to is generally pretty open-minded, and when our conversation shifted to the topic of feminism, I was intrigued to hear what his views were. Upon establishing the fundament of our conversation, which would soon become a discussion, I asked him whether he considered himself a feminist. In response he just laughed and told me that he lacked the physical attribute to ever be considered a feminist. I knew exactly what he was referring to, and I was, quite frankly, in awe about this utter misperception of what feminism really is. My first instinct was to answer: “A functioning brain and the ability of human decency?”, because, as I’d later explain to him, that’s the only things you need to be a feminist. It’s a total misconception to assume that one has to be female in order to be a feminist. Hating men? Most definitely NOT what feminism is about. Feminism is about creating equality amongst males and females. Why is is called “feminism” and not “equalism” then? Well, let’s imagine a scale — even in our current time, it’s unbalanced, with men up in the air, and women closer to the bottom. The goal is for the scale to become balanced, both sides facing each other at the same height. Therefore, we simply must shift the emphasis on the group of people whose position needs to be raised (in our metaphor this group are females, hence the name FEMInism), order to create equality. Does this mean hating men? No. Does this have to be about men in general? No. It’s simply about, for once in history, shifting the focus on females in order for them to be considered equal (not worse, not better either) to males. Do you need a female reproduction system in order to support equality? No. Do you need basic human decency? I would argue that the answer is: Yes.
