3. Is Marx’s critique of religion as “the opiate of the masses” relevant to the event you attend?

Well in some aspect it kinda relates to most religions. Usually it goes by good deeds or what particular things make you a good person. Also, bad things such as not following the five pillars of Islam. So, all in all I don’t think you necessarily have to be religious to go by good deeds or pillars in this case to follow them.

4. Can you identify particular symbols unique to this religious community and determine their meaning? What do you think gives them their power and authority?

Well the two most common symbols are the calligraphy representation of the word Allah and star with the crescent symbol. I think the Quran probably gave the calligraphy the power and the authority and I know the star with crescent id associated with the ottoman Empire that has been used in the middle east dating pre-Islamic times.

5. How does power make itself evident during your visit? What power relationships do you observe?

Well I can definitely tell men has more power I couldn’t physically be there, but I facetimed my dad and I had to be covered and make a makeshift hijab to cover my hair/ head. I observe that the people together as a unit for Salat (prayer) whatever one person bowed everyone did in unison.  

6. Can you identify any ways in which globalization influences the religious beliefs and practices that you observe?

Well In terms of culturally it very much so influences the religious beliefs and practices I observed. The religion of Islam can be practiced globally. It can be even traced back to tv/ media with the actor Marshalla Ali thanking Allah for winning an Oscar.

Every relationship has a powerful dynamic. In some, you have power over another person. In others, someone has power over you or the dynamic of power may shift back and forth depending on the circumstances. 

Make a list of all the relationships and interactions you have in the course of a day: with family, friends, teachers, students, and others. Or watch a television show or movie and observe the relationships of power represented there.

1. Describe the way power is balanced in each relationship you experience or observe.

2. How is power organized? Can you see the intersections of age, gender, income, race, religion, sexuality, or citizenship?

3. What political negotiations are present in these relationships?

4. Consider how these power dynamics were established and how they might be changed.

5. To deepen your understanding of the power of the state, make a list of all the ways you encounter the state in a given day. These may be at home, at school, in the office, or on the street. Representations of the state on television and radio, as well as in newspapers or movies, all contribute to the construction of the state as concrete, real, and powerful.

6. How do these representations of the state reinforce the conception of the state as the primary institutional form through which social relations are experienced?

In the nation of Islam the ability to serve your country is deemed as protecting your country and appraisal of Allah.  “ Within it, Islamism—the belief that politics is and must be an extension of the faith—comes in many colours, from the black of al-Qaeda to the dark green of Saudi-style Wahhabism to the palest of modernising shades.” For a muslim to fight in a war sounds pretty odd to me in on off the tenants of Islam you’re not to kill.

Bill Gates

Contribution to global economy:

Gates is worth $86 billion, and plans to give away the majority of his fortune when he dies. To date, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given away more than $36.7 billion to charities around the globe.

National economy:

In a recent blog post, Gates writes, "I'm a big fan of America's investments in the health and well-being of the world's poor. Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way."

Gates' argument is founded on one central belief: the world is better off with more middle-income countries. He explains that countries with large middle-class populations are less likely to go to war, more capable of preventing global epidemics and more likely to buy American goods and services.

Gates argues that targeted aid is the best way to increase the global middle-class population and reap the benefits that go along with a wealthier and more stable globe.

Relationships to politics:

When it comes to which candidate is best prepared to tackle matters of public health, the choice is clear to Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates. But he's willing to work with whoever wins in November.

Gates, who along with his wife founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 to fight global poverty and disease, told STAT News in an interview published Friday that while his organization would "approach any administration with a positive open mind," he has more experience with both Hillary and Bill Clinton through the Clinton Foundation.

As far as Donald Trump is concerned, Gates seemed unimpressed, though he never mentioned the real estate mogul by name.

Well a lot of my folks had one marriage at a time with a minimum of 3 children up to 5 at a time. Also what I've notice there's always a set of 3 children born within a marriage, I'm the oldest of my dad and mothers children. Lastly as it gets to my parents generation there's only 3 of my family members that has more than 3 kids vs the earlier generation it's more kids being born (mainly my great grandparents) and grandparents most likely because they were baby boomers. On my fathers side there's six generations and on my mothers side there's only 5. I thought that was a fun fact. Plus my grandpa aka "pep pep" on my dads side he said they moved a lot after the way thus having a lot of children. But on my moms side it was the opposite due to the war they had enough income to leave the south even though I still have family down there with out family farms, they had a pause on having children to find better work besides farming and a home in the city's up north aka Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago.

In my maternal side of the family there's a lot of people missing like her father. All this weekend I tried my hardest to find more about him and his side and either no one didn't know. My great aunt is the family historian one my mothers side. Even though she has more information than anyone I wasn't able to speak to her she was busy all weekend. All I know is he was also from Alabama like my mom and uncle when though they are half brother and sister. And he has only my great aunt, aunt Isadora, and uncle Leslie and their children are all deceased. On my father's side it's my grandpa aka "pep pep" who is the family historian. He knew the family really well. However where it gets messed up is my gma side cause he knows of them but not as well as he used to due to a lot of them passing so he kinda lost contact with them. But my dad does know of one of my gma's sisters who had my 2nd cousins mother that's all he knew because that's all he knows that's left.

Commercials

As I was watching Spongebob I seen a good mixture of both female and male orienteted commercials. There was a commercial for a nerf gun that came up that showed little boys playing with each other. Then another commercial came on about this wonder woman doll that I think the company who makes Barbie dolls. Also there were just little girls were playing with it.

My analysis is things that are more male oriented tend to have more blues and darker colors where as the female oriented toys are pink and lighter colors with an exception of the wonder women doll because Wonder Woman wore dark colors in her debut film of this year.

To me I don't understand why we have to create a mentality that a certain color goes with a certain gender. Personally I played with WWE wrestling figures and Bratz dolls as a kid. I also loved watching basketball and still does.

In the year of 2016 the police department had managed to kill at LEAST 309 BLACK people in the U.S. Police are killing BLACK people at persistently high rates! It’s not about crime! There is no excuse for police violence! There is no accountability. And get this 30% of BLACK victims were unarmed in 2015! 13 of the 100 largest U.S. city police department kill BLACK men at higher rates than the U.S. murder rate! Do you see the pattern??? ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO LET YOUR SONS PLAY OUTSIDE TODAY BECAUSE THE OFFICERS BULLET MAY JUST HAVE HIS NAME ON IT!!!!!! So much for the land of the free!!

I AM NOT MY HAIR : What is “good hair”?

Almost every young black girl can relate to this post. Sitting in a chair or on a pillow in between your mother’s legs. With a crook in your neck and only being able to feel one of your butt cheeks as the flat iron and your scalp go to battle. Only to be smacked upside the head by the brush if you move so much as a centimeter. But the end result was always worth it, and the bonding time and exciting conversations were priceless.

In an article in The Conversation, the author states,

“But while parents across all cultures comb their children’s hair, my research during graduate school revealed how, for African-American parents, the task is uniquely layered in emotionally charged, negative stereotypes about hair.”

Black hair. It comes in many lengths, textures, curl patterns and colors. And although we all have different experiences with our hair, we all face a common enemy…the debate about GOOD HAIR.

Although the definition of good hair should be a subjective idea of what kind of hair an individual may believe is the best kind of hair to have, it has become objective and universal rule of what good hair is supposed to look like: straight or wavy. Girls with this kind of hair are often praised with remarks such as “Oh girl you got that good grain.” or “Your are soooo lucky, I wish I had god hair like that.” And although the receiver of these compliments may enjoy every last one, often people fail to realize the flaw in this racial constructed stereotype that is prominent within our own race, among our own people.

And don’t even get me started on the amount of times a dark skin girl with long straight hair has to hear people ask “What are you mixed with ?” As if genes solely from African descent are not good enough to produce healthy black hair. The time and effort one puts into their hair will reflect in the way it looks not just what is in your genetic code.

Even in the work place, a stereotype of what good hair truly is exists. If a black woman comes into work with curly hair pulled into a big “puff” as we call it, some may believe that it is unsightly, uncouth, unkempt and unprofessional. But who are they to say that my hair is not “good” enough just because it is different from anyone else? People tend to judge and don’t even understand how long the perfect puff takes to make.

This racial standard of what kind of hair should and should not be accepted needs to end. There IS no GOOD hair. All hair is beautiful if you take care of it properly. And I have personally suffered too many burns from the flat iron and hot comb to be told my hair is not good enough. Not to mention heat damage that comes along with it. I am proud of my black curly hair !

This creates separation and discrimination among the black community as well and fuels the colorism as well. Women of all kinds should be able to embrace their hair no matter what texture it is. Your hair does not define you, and no one can define good hair.
