Hungry For Love

I went a little experimental for this artwork and I wanted to capture the Duchess’ need for love. In my eyes, they see it as survival - it’s as essential as eating food. As the Duchess searches for love, they devour them bit by bit. Their horse mindlessly walks and the Duchess plucks each heart they find, it is the way of their life.

You might notice I was inspired by two paintings from the game, I like to think of it as my devotion to the game. 🥰

My thoughts on the Lucifer debate is that it makes more sense than not that 'Lucy' is a reference to Lucifer, but I also think it is worth mentioning that none of the angels/demons in sorry we're closed have the names from real biblical lore. The closest to an 'angel' name is Benedict but that's the name of a saint and something called a Benedict Angel (which is a statue and not an actual angel).

I didn't even entertain the idea that she was Lucifer until I realised her whole THING is listening in on other people's 'private' conversations and using them to manipulate others into doing her will. Then there's the serpent imagery, with her major design trait being her long tongue, obviously picking the name "Lucy" out of all the names you could possibly choose for your oc, as well as the duality of her having both a feminine and masculine body which is a common motif in satan depictions.

That last part - the split. Lucifer aside, the impression I got from Lucy is that she used to be much more powerful (an archangel/gods lover seemed to have history with her? And she even has half of their name) and now relies on jumping from vessel to vessel to survive. No other demon has this type of split except for maybe Dream Eater, but he's fighting between two of his own forms rather than taking the life of another.

I don't believe this is purely Lucy being weak. This is a demon who's been put on life support. It makes sense to me that she has been weakened by heaven or god and has been biding her time to get her strength back.

It's one of those things that's like, yeah, that's probably this worlds lucifer equivalent, but this isn't a real biblical story, and these aren't real biblical angels/demons so it doesn't really matter if she is, canonically.

after playing Lucy's route, I have some thoughts on the topic (spoilers for that route)

I've seen on steam a thread where someone argued that Duchess' real name is Lucifer. Since Lucifer is often considered "Gods favourite" before the fall. And well... lover would rather fit that. And they would be more fitting as a figure that started the Great Divide. While I have mixed feeling about that being their real name, I do think they fit the general role.

Lucy does mention that she will have to get used to Michelles name, so it's not like Lucy was their name before their current vessel. But also... man, what a name to change to...

Something I noticed about the last boss fight in Sorry we're closed

Dutchess has eyes on their hands. They're always wearing gloves, but I'm pretty sure the eyes are not there in the cutscene after the fight. Might be a left over from some scrapped attack?

EDIT: I actually searched for the cutscene after the fight again and it's there after the fight. But only on the right hand

It's not even the hand they use to activate their third eye. What does it MEAN?

Finally did Lucys ending, spoilers under the cut (if I dont mess it up)

I saw a still from a stream that kinda made me figure out what the twist of the ending will be, but it still managed to suprise me a lot. I really liked it even though it's the BAD ending.

I was suprised how badly it ends for the Dutchess too. Seeing them swear and then be actually scared was suprising.

Also, damn Robyn, I know you kinda warned me, but I didn't expect you to be an asshole about it

I find it interesting that it gives us some more idea about the issues in the Mishelle/Leslie relationship. And I'm shocked that we actually saw the real Leslie AT ALL

I've been wondering what was up with the dog statue in the crypt since I first played this game, and it turns out there's like actually a unmistakable reason he's in this place that I completely missed the first time lol.

This might've been obvious to other people but I'm just gonna put everything here so it doesn't keep knocking around my brain.

At the start of the rabbit hole I noticed this artifact looked identical to the model for the dog statue - I ended up dismissing it because didn't see any further connection until I noticed T.A.D had this to say about it:

Let's pull back a little. What we know about the dog statue is that he is trying to find his way to his former master.

This wasn't new information to me, but it did remind me to think about the relationship between dog-master, master-subordinate etc. Seeking a companion out in the afterlife.

Anyways who put this unassuming corpse with a very distinct model that is unlike any other corpse in the game here.

Laying this stuff out makes me laugh that I missed it. While playing it through, I interracted with the corpse, thinking I could loot him, and then when you don't get anything from him at all it felt very out of place.

This isn't an enemy model, obviously. In fact, it matches a certain subordinate we saw at the start of the crypt.

The male bodyguard has an identical voice to the dog statue, which wasn't an immediate tell to me because sometimes voice notes are reused in this game (even gabriella uses robyns pained voice at one point) but the female bodyguard does has the same voice note but tuned differently - the voices are definitely meant to be personal and identifiable to the characters.

The time when we see the dead body also matches up with the time that the male bodyguard is no longer in gabriella's flashbacks, and the female bodyguard is the only one left.

In the final section, we see the dog statue as nothing more than a regular dog statue - he has nothing more to say.

He's found his place by a coffin.

I would wager that this was meant to be the final resting place of Gabriella before she broke into the crypt to make her own tomb that suited her much more extravagant tastes.

Gabriella's entire motivation is to feel like she's worth more than her parents by belittling and discarding what they had. Her obsession with having the perfect pedestal to spend her everlasting life was that she wanted to feel more powerful, more beautiful, and more perfect than them. To show them, in her life aswell as her death, that she has surpassed them.

This coffin, in a small, dinky corner shoved off to the side like an afterthought, much less private than her parents' coffins, is probably another reflection of how little they truly valued her as a daughter. She doesn't get a room she gets an alcove, so gabriella gives herself an entire two-story basement instead.

My guy Nameless Male Bodyguard really did find his old masters final resting place in his afterlife. And he chose to rest next to her old one, rather than gabriella's post-duchess power fantasy coffin.

At the hotel on day 2 (after aquarium) the newspaper near the door has an article on the heartbreaker. Where they interview a few demons.

But then I was watching a playthrough, where the same article instead interviewed the Dutchess about it!

So that means that articles can have different variants on different routes. At first I assumed that I got the "random demon" because I'm doing a Lucy route now, but then I saw a livestream where they got the "random demon" version despite doing Chamuels route.

Consider this a PSA: Articles can be different between playthroughts, and it might not even be as abvious as following different routes.
