basil could still see sebastian’s dead corpse eyes staring at him from the back of the fridge in fritz’s room. they haunted him even as he was mentally debating between making stew or steaks with the leftovers of his dead body. it was this reason that he had went to kit - he needed weed to escape from the horrors and to eat the baked goods that littered his kitchen counters. knocking on the door he called out, “octupus ravioli!”

“You should always feel bad about yelling at people, it’s rude and unnecessary.” Eva sighed, rolling her eyes as it became ever more apparent that he wasn’t going to move. She saw him shift and, for a second, felt hopeful but he was just rearranging himself to get more comfortable. “You know, it would probably work. Has anyone tried that?”

“Not really, don’t feel up to that. I’ll make sure that you’re the first to know if that changes,” he said, settling in to get to work. “Hey, I have an idea! If you get attacked, you can just tell them mid-stab that he needs to chill out.”

basil had a plate full of brownies in his hands ( and several more in his kitchen but ignore that ) and needed to get rid of at least some of them. “now don’t slap me for this, but do you want some brownies?” he asked a pretty girl who he saw walking up the path. “you see i stress bake and last night was rough. so now my kitchen is covered in baked goods and i think my girlfriend might kill me. scouts honor that there’s nothing weird in them?” except for the blood from the fritz’s latest victim, but you couldn’t even taste it.

“Yes I hear you, I’m not deaf.” Eva rolled her eyes at him, he was being so dramatic.”When I said I would dump my coffee on you if you didn’t get up from my favorite spot, I was kidding…obviously.” She hadn’t been but now that he was making a scene, she had to play it off. She really did want that spot though, it was the best one on the quad. “You need to chill out.” 

“Well that’s a relief, makes me feel less bad about yelling at you,” he said, swinging his legs up as he relaxed into what was obviously the best spot in the quad. “Oh. Ha ha, funny joke,” he grinned, not quite believing that she had been joking but willing to play along. “Oh I’ll remember that line for if I ever see the director - you know the maniac that’s killing our classmates.”

    Lily couldn’t read liars but she was pretty sure he wasn’t actually fine. “ oh, yeah? ” she said in regards to the project. the corners of her lips upturned which caused dimples to appear on her cheeks. “ what subject? ” if it wasn’t for the fact that no one was behind him, she wouldn’t have made conversation ; but luckily for her, there wasn’t. he was the only person she had to converse with.

He nodded, “Yeah it’s for this food and nutrition course - super strict professor.” That was entirely a lie - although most of Basil’s stress didn’t come from this particular project, the impending due dates certainly weren’t helping. “This stupid essay though - finding sources for the information is proving nearly impossible, and we’re not allowed to just use the textbook or the class lectures - we have to find other reliable, scientific sources. And with eveything else going on,” he paused for a moment mid-ramble. “Well I don’t think I’d be wrong to say most people have been having trouble focusing, y’know?”

     when the boy said SEVEN shots, Lily couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows. “ I mean, we don’t think we sell that many at once … ” her voice had returned to her normal gentleness. she felt BAD for him ; she wished she could give him a place in the back to take a nap ( because anyone who orders seven shots surely needs a nap ) – “ but I can surely give it to you anyway. ” she offered him a smile ; giving him the espresso shots was probably a bad idea… Lily got his order together and rang him up. “ I don’t mean to sound rude or anything … but, um, are you — okay? ”

he nodded slightly, ready for the disappointment and began to emptily ramble, “yeah, that makes sense. after all every shot has 200mg of caffeine and 1400mg of coffee is enough to at least make you jittery.” he cut himself short when she said that she would do it anyways, a soft smile spreading across a tired face before it was interrupted by a yawn. “yeah, i’m fine. just a crazy long shift at work, and i have a project due at 7am.”

the night shift was BEYOND boring ; being a cashier at a cafe wasn’t her dream job. and aside from it being nearly empty & her having nothing to do, Lily had a project to finish for class. she let out a sigh while shutting her phone off. the bell above the front door went off, causing her heart to skip a beat. “ welcome ! “ her cashier voice was strong and far louder than her actual voice ( but honestly not by much ). “ what can I get you? ”

basil felt as though he hadn’t slept in months - the thought that someone out there knew about what he had done left him feeling as though he was going insane. he could almost feel the warm blood coating his hands, despite having scrubbed at the skin for almost an hour. “can i get 7 shots of an espresso?” he asked, unsure if that was even possible. “and uh, a chocolate chip muffin?” the smile on his face was somewhat strained but he didn’t want to be rude.

“We will?” Dawn moved her hands away from her face after he kissed her hands taking a deep breath she moved onto his lap nuzzling her face against his neck. Wanting to be as close to him as possible right now. A small smile formed on to her lips as he spoke he made her feel so happy even when she was in disarray. “What are you going to do?“

“Yeah,” he whispered, aware that he was making promises that he probably couldn’t keep. And yet he still pulled her close, wanting nothing more than to vanish the fear that the dirtbag director had instilled in her. “I’d kill the bastard if I could - anything to keep you safe,” he said, the last part a mere breath of words before he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

“I don’t know what’s going on okay!?” Dawn was on the verge of tears as she sat down on the side of Basil’s bed, putting her head in her hands. She wasn’t used to totally trusting anyone and she trusted Basil with her whole heart but ever so ofter she felt like it was too good to be true. That there had to be something wrong with him so she was just get so much into her own thought when he wasn’t around. “I’m just scared I’m sorry I yelled. I’m sorry“ Her voice was shaky. “I just want this whole director thing to be over.”

“We’ll figure it out together, okay?” He reassured her as he sat down next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Pressing a kiss to the closest hand, he leaned into her slightly and focused on controlling his breathing. “I know, I understand sweetheart, don’t even worry about it. I’ll do what I can alright?” he offered.

Kyle then hoisted the pizzas above his head, as if he were using them as weights. Each time his elbows bent, he let out a gorilla whoop. ❝ ALRIGHT, NUTMEG HERE WE GO !! ❞ He then gave Basil the pizzas as if they were the holy grail. ❝ A party with me is the only time. C’mon, man, let’s double pound it back, some ‘zza in one hand and a shot in the other !! ❞

Basil couldn’t help but laugh at Kyle’s antics, taking the pizza’s carefully and placing them spread out on the table. “Time to party like the world’s gonna end!” He cheered as he took a piece from the first box, holding a bottle of liquor in the other hand. “Let’s get more messed up then our minds, fuck.”

“How else could they have known, Basil? Huh?“ Dawn was way too whined up right now. The last thing she wanted was everyone to know about what she had been going through. There was no one else in the world she truest in the world more then her boyfriend but she was too scared. Too scared to be found out and too scared that karma had it’s kiss for her and he would sell her out. “I love you but you need to tell me if you did this.“

“I don’t know! But I didn’t fucking tell them, alright? Besides, it’s not like they don’t know shit about me that they definitely shouldn’t!” He was yelling know, unable to keep his emotions in check and he was struggling to keep from just snapping. “I didn’t do it, why the fuck would I? I love you, I would never do this to you,” he said.

Dill had been drinking for what seemed like the whole night when most people were spending this time with their family. He was by himself on the sofa of the frat house playing guitar. “You want to hear a sweet serenade?“ He slurred looking at the only other person in the room.

Basil should have been spending time with his family, and perhaps if their parents had made time to see him he would be. Instead, he was searching for the only member of his family that was on this deserted campus, his voice calling out as he walked into the empty frat house. “Yo Dill!” Following the sounds of distant guitar strumming, he ended up finding the other in the basement.

“Sure bro,” he grinned flopping down on the couch next to the other. Pulling a gift from his pocket, he was drawn into old memories as he paused. The family’s relationships were admittedly rocky at best and Basil didn’t know that he wanted to sir the pot - and yet it seemed that he would be given no choice. “Our parents gave this to me - and I know how you feel about the whole thing but at least don’t burn it this year.”

Basil knew - he knew their parents had secretaries and assistants pick out the gifts that they got every year, knew that there wasn’t any thought or love put in from the so-called gifters. But there was something in him that forced him to acknowledge the effort the people that worked for their parents had put in, in order to find something they genuinely thought that they might enjoy. “Just think of it as a gift from Debra - remember how she used to come to the house when we were little and watch us play in the snow? And afterwards she would welcome us back into the house with a cup of hot chocolate - tucking us into bed hours before our parents would even get back into town.”

He paused for a second, a reminiscent smile crossing his face as he thought about all of the staff that had served as a replacement family through the years. “And yeah, our parents paid for it - but she’s the one who picked it out. And Debra was always nice to us,” he said, trying aimlessly to convince his brother to give the gift a chance this year instead of looking at it so cynically.

“Oh and I got something else for you, paid with it with money from tips from the restaurant - a bunch of us kitchen guys went in together,” he said, pulling out a smaller gift. He had went out of his way to make sure that his brother would recognize that their parents had no hand in the gift - that it was just something from him with no strings attached.

“What the fuck is this, Basil?“ She yelled storming into his room before throwing her phone at him exposing the text that she had from The Director knowing about her secret. The only person she ever told was Basil a overwhelming sense of betrayal washed over her. “How could you tell someone? I thought you loved me”

“I don’t fucking know, Dawn,” he said after just barely catching the phone that was thrown at him. “What the fuck? You really think I told someone - do you even fucking know me?” He yelled throwing the phone into the soft covers of his bed as he stood up.
