It was a slow, lazy afternoon. My sofa gets lots of sun and I slipped off into my first readathon nap. This in no way was related to my second book, The Detective and the Woman: A Novel of Sherlock Holmes, as it was a terrific read, lots of suspense, and has me hankering to read author Amy Thomasâ next one! Just finished Uncle Petros and Goldbachâs Conjecture: A Novel of Mathematical Obsession by Apostolos Doxiadis. Ms. Steinem and Ms. Albright called on young women who favor Mr. Sanders over Hillary Clinton to essentially grow up and get with the program.
I guarantee Iâve done less to get dick and please men than either of these women. Bitches, please.
If my candidate doesnât win the primary, Iâm willing to vote for the winner instead in the general election, but this kind of Mean Girls bully tactic is unworthy of Ms. Albright (though, Iâm sad to say, not Ms. Steinem).
Sanders 2016.
Upon reflection, I find the core of what bothers me about this is that these two women are very far removed from the challenges todayâs feminists are facing, as well as the problems of regular voters of any age - and theyâre oblivious to it when theyâre professing to be right on top of real feminist needs.
They have been trailblazers, sure, but in their time as young women. When they were 25, there was no shortage of decent-paying careers to be sought, and cost of living was reasonable. Education was far more affordable and attainable then, especially for white people. How long has it been since either Steinem or Albright lacked money, ability to pay for medical care, formal education, or a powerful media voice and influence?
They must see Hillary and think her in the White House is âthis is the encapsulation of all weâve tried for in life.â Whereas, my sister, a Sanders supporter of 32, sees âmaybe I could finally afford to finish college and earn a degree so I can qualify for a better job someday before Iâm old. And maybe have health care that doesnât drain a significant part of my wages, too.â She hopes.
Instead, she gets told by these overprivileged yahoos, who want a token president at any cost, that sheâs doing it for dick. WOW. I donât ever want to hear Steinem shoot off her yap about âsisterhoodâ ever again, when itâs clear she knows frighteningly little of what modern feminists truly want and need.

Oh, Ms. Steinem. What happened to, âFeminism has never been about getting a job for one woman ⊠Itâs about making life more fair for women everywhereâ?
Thereâs a quote near the end of the New York Times article that resonates with me â âWhile the historic aspect of the first woman president is hugely powerful and important and would set a really powerful image for young boys and girls to look up to, she might not be the right first womanâ â though I would change âmight not beâ to âis not.âÂ
This is really dismaying. Iâm not one of the young women Steinem and Albright are criticizing, but my politics (and economic situation) align me with them, as does my feminism; I grew up in the twilight of second-wave with a mom who was very feminist, but really began to understand feminism through intersectional feminists and third-wave writers. And as someone whoâs interested in womenâs history, their remarks are only a reworking of the anti-suffragist argument, that women canât ever be trusted to vote logically or responsibly because theyâre under the sway of their hormones, illogic, a candidateâs charisma, or all of the above. Theyâre the other side of what Bernieâs more obnoxious supporters say about women who support HRC: that theyâre only supporting her because sheâs a woman.
The entire thing is upsetting as well as angering. HRC as a vocal and educated First Lady was so formative for me as a bb aesc. These arenât easy criticisms for me to make, because her political presence helped me be more assertive about myself and my beliefs when I was surrounded by jackass teenaged boys at a school that tried to tell me I wasnât as good as they were because I was a gross, illogical girl. But for me, at least as the candidates have campaigned so far, Bernie is the way to go. Iâm disappointed that those campaigning for her have forgotten what their own feminism fought forâthat, ultimately, the advancing of equality is more important than the career of an individual.
Suggesting to me that I donât know how to make studied decisions, form my own opinions, and make my own choices, is the opposite of what feminism is about.
Frederick Douglass was one of the earliest and most passionate defenders of the fledgling womenâs suffrage women, and he appeared at their rallies when many men would have died rather be seen there. When he was asked to speak in April of 1888 at a feminist rally, he began his talk with this:
âMrs. President, Ladies and Gentlemen:â I come to this platform with unusual diffidence. Although I have long been identified with the Womanâs Suffrage movement, and have often spoken in its favor, I am somewhat at a loss to know what to say on this really great and uncommon occasion, where so much has been said. When I look around on this assembly, and see the many able and eloquent women, full of the subject, ready to speak, and who only need the opportunity to impress this audience with their views and thrill them with âthoughts that breathe and words that burn,â I do not feel like taking up more than a very small space of your time and attention, and shall not. I would not, even now, presume to speak, but for the circumstance of my early connection with the cause, and of having been called upon to do so by one whose voice in this Council we all gladly obey.â âx
Steinem and Albright ought to take a page from Douglassâs book.  If you thrill to words that burn (or âBern,â as it happens), then ladies: donât let anyone shut you up.
