Damian moves into a bare, run-down apartment, deliberately avoiding Dick’s offer of a room. A fleeting, painful memory of Alfred underscores his isolation. Stephanie Brown calls to check on him, and he asks her to dig into Nika, a local gang, and Respawn using the Batcomputer.

Spotting said gang from his window, he tails them to an abandoned train depot, where he witnesses a masked group execute two of the men as a warning over failed shipments. Damian attempts to follow the killers’ car but is run off the road into an icy ditch. Soaked, phone dead, and half-frozen, he trudges home in the pre-dawn dark, cataloguing his failures but resolving to start hunting the suppliers tomorrow.

Before he can even settle in, a confrontation with an aggressive white-haired student who calls himself Respawn ignites a less-than-friendly sparing match that exposes old tensions with his former teammates and new ones with his brother.

Frustrated by the school's idealism and his own role in failing to meet it, Damian walks out and finds himself drawn back to the Crow's Nest café, where Nika patches him up for the second time and offers to join his self-appointed mission to dismantle the town's growing gang presence. As the two circle each other with guarded curiosity, Nika reveals just enough to suggest she's carrying her own hidden guilt.

Bruce, tired of a son who doesn't seem to be able to bend, sends Damian to a small town no one's ever heard of, to a quieter, more discreet Titans Academy run by Dick Grayson. No costumes. No capes. Just a second chance he never asked for. But small towns have their own secrets. Those he would have met if he'd gone have managed to find their way into Damian's life, whether he wants it or not. ------ This fic is loosely inspired by Wind Breaker and Spy x Family, and takes place a few months after the end of Teen Titans (2016-2020).

Art by the co-writer Swirl_Girl, it has nothing to do with the fic she just won’t stop sending me random sketches of Damian as a cat so I fingered I’d add one on since she doesn’t use social media all that much.

Since you mentioned that you’re accepting daminika fanfic ideas, I hope you don’t mind if I reccomend a pair.

For the first one, maybe a fluffy short where they go manga shopping in Tokyo?

Having manga as a shared aspect of their relationship is something that I find to be rather unique when it comes to them. I try to include it as much as I can in my fics since I think this should be brought to the mainstream. I’d write this myself, but fluff is definitely not my strongest suit and I’m going to be pretty low on writing time soon.

For the second, what if Damian introduced Nika to all of his pets?

I saw in your Ao3 fic that you had Damian work in an animal shelter, so why not expand on that aspect of his character? This is something that could work well as a 1-2k word short like the one you wrote, so it may be something that’s right up your alley.

I hope I’m not imposing myself by the way, with Batman and Robin on a new arc it’ll be a while before Flatline returns so it’s up to us writers to fill the content gap 😅

opinions on magical Damian

Because personally, I really like the idea of him being a magical girl able to use magic, since I like the idea of the Al Ghul family being magic.

But I'm aware some people don't like it because they want the Bat family to not have powers (except Duke), so your input would be nice
