      “ don’t, don’t! ”  shanta is not usually shrill, but her voice cuts in pitchy and urgent, with a hand fisted into carter’s sleeve, trying to hold him in place.  her leg is a mess, there’s no getting around that, but the thought of any of that gore getting on him is driving her to panic; the drops of her blood that touch the ground melt into the tiling, fizzling and corroding down into little pits on the surface.  

apologetic now for having been so sharp when he was trying to help, her expression softens around the tense set of her jaw, looking for all the world like a woman tasked with eating her own arm, raw.  the hand not clutching him presses down harder against the bloody wound, thankfully an inch off from any fatal blood vessels — getting home to the academy was going to take a herculean effort.

“ sorry.  please don’t — don’t touch it.  i don’t wanna burn your skin off, ”  and then, in attempt to lighten the mood, she adds:  “ your dad would never let me hear the end of it.  i burned his hand like this one time, and he’s still sore about it to this day.  can you just . . . can i borrow your belt?  and please, don’t tell him.  promise me, carter, you won’t tell your dad. "

knighthood would have been easier with a less charming ward.  winnifred had a particular kind of kindness that made shanta want to put a spiked, iron fence around it, so that no one and nothing could get near enough to injure it, but it also made her forget, sometimes, that she and the princess were simply not within the same circles — they were not made to be friends.

her aunt, her beloved mentor, would have found it a dereliction of duty to put the princess at risk of anything.  including, but not limited to: asking the princess to sit out in a cold hallway outside her chambers late into the night, where anyone, even the queen or a common cold, might catch her.

“ thank you for offering, though.  there’ll be plenty of time to talk tomorrow, if you wish — and yes, before you ask, i did check your chambers, as per the queen’s request.  you’re completely safe. ”

the princess is awfully small.  and oddly direct.  eva looks left and right, then offers her the tiniest little bow.

“ princess, ”  she begins, solemn and elegant.  “ that’s . . . very kind of you, but it’s quite alright.  i was just admiring the portraits here — especially this one.  bears an incredible resemblance to a regent in corona, as well as your father, ”  she had lost a diary in corona, at the hands of a particularly sneaky little thief, and she was still terribly sore about it.  “ have you ever been to corona?  as the future queen, i suppose you’ll need to foster some . . . er, bonds to the place? ”

“ do you — have anything we could put these guys into? ”  she asks, somewhat desperately, considering lifting the entire tank and just carrying it along with her.  its oblong and full of gallons of water, and korra momentarily takes her hands off the chipped glass to see if she can lift it.  her arms strain ever so slightly, but thankfully, it’s doable.  “ or, like, tape?  i — i don’t know, anything to keep the water from leaking out, or something to keep these two in water.  man, who does this to innocent little fishes?  who does this and just walks off? ”  

she directs her gaze at sae-byeok.  it’s not accusing, but questioning.  “ did you see anything? ”
