Jay-Rem endgame

Blog devoted to Starfleet Academy, though there might be occasional posts about other Treks. Okay, I honestly just made this because I became obsessed with Darem/Jay-Den.

I was rewatching episode 1, and this moment stood out to me:

It's from the bit at the end when they land in San Francisco. The shots keep fading from one into the other slowly, but this one lingers between two images the longest, and it's the only one in which the image of one character is so neatly framed in the image of another.

This show has been setting these two up from the very beginning. I think it's why this romance feels like it's the most important and profound in the show. So many little hints all across the season. Caleb and Tarima got more screen time, but they feel much shallower. Much less important. Darem and Jay-Den's romantic relationship is and I believe will remain the most important romantic relationship in the show. I think the slow burn nature is a part of it. SFA really wants to build the two of them up, because they matter so very very much.

Without spoiling it--can anyone tell me if Darem and Jay-Den interact in the first edition of the comic that just got released? Or if Darem is even in it at all?

Crushed to learn that Starfleet Academy was considering a sequel to "Living Witness" if it had been renewed for a third season. I was actually hoping that that might happen. We could've had an epic Doctor vs Doctor episode but noooooo

The cancellation of the show is a very painful blow, but that's not an excuse not to make fan content about it. On the contrary, there should be more of this content to make up for what we didn't get enough of. I will never have enough of Darem, especially in his Khionian form 🙏.

What's more star trek than having a progressive sci fi show so ahead of its time that its cancelled early despite not even having a chance to prove itself?

The hate that Starfleet Academy got felt extremely disproportionate. I get not liking it if you aren't into the college YA vibe, but it does what it set out to do very well. The acting was phenomenal, the sets and CGI beautiful, the stories interesting and often unique, and the characters were mostly compelling. Its biggest weakness, in my opinion, was the Caleb/Tarima romance, but there was far more to the show than them. It's a very, very good show. And it's absolutely Star Trek. A YA college Star Trek, but Star Trek nonetheless. I don't remember people hardcore hating on Lower Decks when it came out and saying that it wasn't Star Trek. Because regardless of the fact that Lower Decks is quite a good show, it's got far less of a Star Trek vibe than SFA.

I think the hate campaign was astroturfed. If it wasn't for that, I think there would have been far more viewers and it would have gotten a much better reception. I don't know who had it in for SFA or why, but the response was absolutely not organic. Still, it worked. A good show was canceled. A show that could have brought a whole new generation into Star Trek.

And you know, that may have been the point. Maybe it wasn't about SFA itself, but Star Trek as a franchise. Star Trek, fundamentally, is about learning to respect other cultures and seek non violent resolutions. To try to look past differences you have with others and come to peace and understanding. Which isn't a mindset that those in power want to promote right now. If the lower classes find ways to not be divided, we have a better chance at fighting against the rich. They benefit from teaching us to hate each other. And shows like Star Trek go against that.

Yes, I think that's likely what it was about.

I wonder how they're going to deal with the fact that s2 ends on an intense cliffhanger. The showrunners said that they didn't film an ending to the show just in case. I'm hoping that's a lie. It would be very fucked up to end SFA on a cliffhanger. I wish the showrunners could shop SFA around, but Paramount owns the IP, and I don't imagine they'll give it up.

Idk, the fact that the first close up shot we get of Jay-Den in his uniform with his threaded red braid visible is when he's standing in front of Darem, who's wearing a uniform with a red stripe also clearly visible, and very close to Jay-Den's braid from an audience perspective, feels super intentional. Maybe it isn't. I don't know how many things I've observed about them that seem like very subtle subtext are actually meant to be subtext, but it feels like there's a whole lot, and this is one of them. Like, Jay-Den's braid could have been threaded with any color. It could have been threaded with blue to reflect his uniform, his path in Starfleet. But no. It was threaded with a red that's almost the exact same shade as Darem's uniform, though a bit darker because his hair is mixed in. I just don't see how that's not meant to be yet another seed planted in the mind of the audience to get us to ship Jay-Rem, or at least not be surprised by it when it happens.

I swear, every time I think I've reached the end of ideas of ways the showrunners might be trying to get us to link these two in our minds, I find another

Oh, look, a tiny Jay-Rem crumb from the finale I didn't notice:

Everyone on the bridge is going about their business, trying to get the ship fixed. But Darem? Darem's head is turned in the direction of Jay-Den, who is leaving the bridge to go to medical. I suppose you could argue that it's SAM and the Doctor he's worried about, but he's not especially close to either of them, at least not more so than any other person there. Even Genesis, who I'm pretty sure considers SAM to be her best friend, isn't gazing after her as she leaves. So no, Darem isn't distracted by the departure of SAM and the Doctor, he's distracted by Jay-Den leaving. True, he isn't distracted for long, but he's still clearly unhappy that Jay-Den is going somewhere else.

Ah, my crumbs.
