He suffered, he bled, he killed, he survived. He was broken and he still chose to stand up, to keep fighting, despite of his brokenness. Was it for power, authority and control? Was it because of his ego? No. It was all about Ravka.
But. He has a demon inside him. And don't you find it ironic, that in the end Ravka's still being protected by darkness and shadows? Maybe the right decision was to let goodness control the darkness and defend and guard Ravka with all kind of dedication and wrong actions. Zoya has her own demons. She's neither gentle nor soft. She's neither kind nor sweet. Zoya is the Storm. And Nikolai is the Sturmhond. Zoya is the lightnings and fire. Nikolai is the hope and the fox's cruelty. Both of them, soldiers.
And they perfect for such a country: the King of scars, Korol Rezni, and the Dragon Queen, the Storm Witch, aren't they? Maybe it's all about being both a monster and a rescuer. Maybe Ravka needs both demons and saints.

the showrunners of shadow and bone completely fucked up zoya nazyalensky's character and i will never forgive them. it's kind of funny how quickly they had zoya switch teams and stuff because it made her seem so one dimensional??? like please bitch i could go on and on about her as a character and how her 'mean girl' facade was literally consequent of some of the most traumatic shit that's occurred within the grishaverse-- she was insecure and monopolised/manipulated by the darkling at the beginning of the trilogy and her journey from vulnerable child to manipulated child soldier to dragon queen of ravka is seriously something that shouldn't be glossed over or simplified, but here netflix is anyway, simplifying what might possibly be the most complicated and nuanced character arc of the grishaverse (sorry I'm just a zoya truther i have to express my love for her daily)
I feel like so many people just.
Missed the entire point of RoW that Zoya and Nikolai would rule Ravka together, they just had to find a way AROUND all the obstacles that were thrown at them.
It isnāt a competition between them - they work BEST in tandem.Ā
That was the whole point. Of the entire duology.Ā
Zoya becoming queen wasnāt taking Nikolaiās throne. It wasnāt a snub, it wasnāt presented in a way that deemed her theĀ ābetterā ruler.Ā
It was the solution that presented itself because of Nikolaiās arc coming to a head with his demon powers and bloodline.
He is obviously going to marry her, he will obviously rule at her side. She obviously WANTS him there, helping her.
The difference is he now has the capacity to act as Sturmhond more freely, and help Ravka in less conventional ways where, otherwise, they might be unable to act.
This is the BEST outcome for him.
Unlike a political marriage to a stranger, Nikolai is comfortable knowing his queen is handling shit on the throne while he can go off as Sturmhond and do his thing how he needs to.
This is true teamwork instead of just becoming King & Queen.Ā

For some reason iām having this weird felling that zoyalai fans are becoming more quite (but not less unhinged) soā¦
Honestly, the best way they can really spin this is by having Zoya and Nikolai grow close due to his demon problem and Nikolai developing feelings for her as a result (which is likely the route theyād go). All the while, he grows a bit distant with Alina, whether because she leaves for Shu Han or because of her newly dark powers, or her remnant feelings for Mal, or because heās trying to keep the demon a secret from her (or a combination of the 4).Ā
And then, instead of Nikolai beingĀ ātornā between two women heās āin love withā, he is more accurately torn between his sense of duty, both to the throne and to his promise to Mal about protecting Alina.Ā
While obviously wanting to be with Zoya.Ā
Zoya of the lost city. Zoya of the garden. Zoya bleeding in the snow. You are strong enough to survive the fal.
