one of the things i didn't expect to run aground of this early is coming to the realization that variable tracking will need a complete overhaul. things like personality tracking is conceptually fun but ultimately orthogonal to the kind of story i'm looking to tell, where outcomes are predicated more on what the player does or does not do, what they do or do not know, what they do or do not say etc etc. which in some ways is ostensibly more work but in other ways feels more organic to a game that's about exploration either of the world or various branching dialogue with it's characters

#one bit of umbrage i take with a lot of interactive stories is how often you can exhaust every dialogue option #NO!!! not here. sometimes you will say something and it will block you from returning to the tree #without necessarily ending the conversation #this is also why it'd only be six chapters. ain't trackin' all that for thirty chapters #it'll be big but also compact #but yeah idk it probs doesn't behoove the story to have a shyness stat that either will or will not lock you out of a romance #that doesn't make any sense? to the story? but the impressions you leave on characters based on what you say does #could see it (personality stats) being fun for flavor but one (BRIEF) conversation is already 4k words so that sounds like a lot of work

keeping to the vein of saying i'm not going to talk about a project and then talking about it anyway:

i really like the black scrawl from nier from a worldbuilding and design perspective, but don't want to use celestial script. so, i'm using enochian instead. HOWEVER, accounting for how to write all of these tattoos would be a nightmare, even i used a brush, so i'm translating what's written into binary code, and then translating that into enochian, and then turning that into a brush. which somehow isn't as much of a nightmare.

#it actually has nothing to do with any abrahamic religion at all. it's not even sci fi. but you know what it is? really fucking cool #let's introduce a double cipher to the narrative it'll be fun #it's not necessary to decode in order to understand the story but it could be an interesting easter egg for the people who want to

it's crazy how you can get stuck at the 3.2k mark on a writing project for four months, realize it's because the idea is shit, scrap it, and then blast out an entire SFF with it's own lore and most of an outline AND 3.3k's worth of a draft in like, a week. some plots really are just elaborate music videos in your head and nothing more
