I like Lilith and Nikki for many reasons, the quickest and most shallow being that they look good together (I am often an aesthetic shipper). Alongside that, their stories and themes are wonderfully contrasting in a way that I think makes them soooo interesting as a pair.
Lilith wants love. She gave up everything to be adored, to be loved, to be cherished, to be the only one that everyone sees. She’s constantly subtly manipulating every aspect of her surroundings in order to achieve that. Her personality is fake, and to a degree, everything about her is. Her name, her body, her voice… she completely abandoned her true self in the pursuit of adoration.
Then there’s Nikki, a girl who’s compassionate and so full of love and passion in what she does, who she is. She’s questioned herself, despised her weaknesses, but she keeps pushing on despite it. She practically radiates love and kindness without condition, and she truly believes in herself and the people around her. Nikki is truthful and honest, she doesn’t hide things and she does the best she can to never hurt the people she loves. Nikki is strong willed and kind in a way that contrasts so starkly with the cold world that Lilith has trapped herself in.
Lilith is surrounded by people, but she is completely alone. Everybody loves her, but there’s nobody she’s actually emotionally connected to. She wants love, but she’s much too afraid to actually have it, not after Old Hendrill’s death. So instead, she enjoys the control that comes from having people adore you, she methodically sets herself up as a person who deserves adoration. She’s so locked in her hatred and desires and she’s constantly putting on a play of who she is.
I love the idea of Nikki, as a character who loves others so much and works so hard to help everyone that she can, interacting directly with Lilith. How will she act when she meets a girl like Lilith who is impenetrable in her defense against genuine kindness? How will Lilith react to the heartfelt intentions of a girl like Nikki, who seems so strong and warm.
Maybe it boils down to the cold, reserved X warm, loving trope
