Hey, guys! How would you rewrite Lilith's/Ashley's story?

Obviously, I'd want to age her up, but I also wouldn't necessarily want to erase too much from the original story, so....

Perhaps, the beauty pageant was for 18 and 19 years olds? I still imagine it frequented by young people.

Except I would want this to have been a longer time ago than in the story, so Lilith has been a queen for longer. We could say the campaigning took an year, so she got crowned at 19, and her ruling lasted 4 years til she needs to be re-elected? Since most governmental ruling stuff last 4 years.

So she'd be... 23. Still young, but not... 16. Jeez.

this is just a tiny outline of my thoughts and useless analysis ✿

tw??: i touch upon the weird seductive relationship between Mercury and Lilith

So really Mercury was very much shrouded in mystery in both the event story and the reflection story. Every time he’s mentioned, it’s with longing or curiosity. He’s a figure of which others wish to know but cannot know, often cannot even see. In the event story, Nikki even feels disappointed by the end of the night when Mercury does not show up, even when she is the one specially chosen by the bird in the open cage to spend night at the villa. Those of whom she danced with were sad and disappointed too; it’s like Mercury’s presence is so heavy when he is never really there, bringing such an overall essence of longing over the entire ball. He has an allure that almost everyone is drawn to, including Nikki, when all she knew of him and of his relation to the mansion was from the words that others had said. There was still an attraction to him, like a compulsion. (Lilith parallels this in that she compels people to be attracted to her.)

In the reflection story, Mercury (as a young kid) keeps himself totally quiet and silent. The servant narrator notices him always but does not know him… no one in that mansion actually gets to know him except for those small moments when he reveals the things he has interest in: observing the free bird, playing the cello, and staring at the picture of the mansion’s master with the elf girl. Those in the mansion pick up on those subtle things, but Mercury himself never opens up, never speaks.

He’s clearly moved or touched or somehow inspired by seeing the bird so free in it’s cage… when Mercury overtakes the mansion, he still keeps a bird there, and allows it to be completely free and fly at its own will, and it always returns to the cage to be with him. This is quite obvious i mean this is really much of what the event story was about aha but it’s really very significant i think; it shows how he values freedom, even loves it. He, himself, felt cage and never truly free, and he does put others in cages when he closes off his emotions and puts them aside in favor of his perusing for power or whatever, but when those emotions are engaged, he holds this sweet sentiment for freedom and the strength/will of others, which is very much expressed in the way he treats the bird

Again, in his reflection story, Mercury keeps himself silent during his stay at the mansion ~ A bit like how the nightingale cannot sing in the presence of Lilith. I imagine that, for Mercury, all of his feelings and all he’s been through is just so troubling that he wants to be closed off from others. Like an inclination to be silent and say nothing at all, but everything inside him must be so tense. The nightingale, however, isn’t necessarily refusing to open up (well, it is…) but is more so watered down by Lilith’s overwhelming presence. Mercury closes himself off as a defense and to (i think…) exude just a tiny bit of cruelty; the nightingale closes up in a way to refuse the advance of Lilith and to also give up on itself a little. Both are sort of suffocated by what they have gone/are going through.

In the reflection story, we see the Nightingale eventually dying while being kept in Lilith’s captivity—really in direct opposition to how Mercury allows his own bird to fly free. I’ll mention that a bit later haha

But we also see, when the nightingale is first introduced to Lilith, that it recognizes her deception, that what she is cannot really be trusted. It watches sadly as the poet falls for her enchantment and stays with her, very much caged himself, which he does not realize until much later, and ends up leaving the nightingale behind (though the nightingale is very happy to see the poet set himself free)

The nightingale itself recognizes the lust in Lilith, and i like to think of it through the original/spiritual meaning of lust: possession and control over everything and everyone around you, a way to have power over things without anything having power over you, challenging authority to become it, etc… Lilith doesn’t go about her lust so aggressively, but that’s what it is, a desire to possess everyone and their love. That’s why she goes after Mercury so strongly, she wants to possess him, his heart; she just wants him to like her. She does this to the poet and the nightingale as well, chasing their hearts and wanting their love, and when she finds that they both loved Ashley more than they are loving her, she clings to them and traps them both in a cage, and quite literally possesses the nightingale. It’s just what she does to things that won’t love her… because she wants it so bad. She does it to Mercury; she keeps chasing the love of others as if it will make her happy, as if it will fill the emptiness within her and set her free of the endless wanting

That’s not even to mention the lustiness that’s in Mercury i mean it’s so strong in him… i feel that’s not quite how he is naturally i think he’s much more detached but he has this insanely strong desire to control so many things and that’s the lust really but it’s different with him because he’s very patient with it so it’s not very intense and not very recognizable oh but anyways…

Lilith almost seems to mourn Ashley, the girl who she was and the parts of herself she lost. I think she's always going to be comparing herself to Ashley... she has the ability to look into the mirror and look into the past and see her true self against her false self. They are different but they are the same 💔 Lilith is always going to be at odds with Ashley just as she will always love her—and mourn her, and hold sorrow for her, and try to forget her

She trapped the poet and the nightingale both in a cage in sorrow for the one she is endlessly trapped in herself… the confinement of her falseness that leaves her empty and lonely. Her own beauty (and the beautiful place she lives, and the beauty of the things around her) is caging. She gave up herself to be loved by others, and now she’s trapped. I think this is obvious… but she's so caught up in her falsity that she no longer can even attain what she desired; she is forever lonely, and she is stuck (trapped, caged) in this endless loop of striving for love without it ever being enough. Nightbane even warned her of it.

There's also this repeated dynamic that i like to think of as powerful men behind the vessel of a sweet girl (Mercury behind Ophelia, Nightbane behind Lilith, Leonid behind Nikki — also no one talks about this?? It's the same dynamic in different flavors has anyone noticed??) and looking at it through this perspective puts Mercury and Lilith at opposite sides of this duet. Do you see? Mercury is a man clearly putting a girl in a cage, Lilith is a girl who has been clearly caged by a man. But we see in their reflections that Mercury is also caged, and Lilith also does some caging of herself “cage” doesn’t feel like a word anymore lol

so aside from the weird lust and manipulation that goes on between Mercury and Lilith (I’m sorry btw, I know that topic makes a few people uncomfortable), their dynamic consists of being constrained and confined, as well as trying to constrain other (and i believe each other, too)

thinking about it through the powerful men behind the vessel of a sweet girl dynamic, it’s very interesting how Mercury, the one with power, chooses to treat his bird with sentiment and care and keep it free, while Lilith, the one very much caged, does not recognize the value in letting the nightingale go and chooses to keep it caged with her. I think it’s really interesting how Mercury goes about it far less… selfishly. There’s so much difference and also similarity between them, and they are connected through this metaphor of caging
