The Prince Is Giving a Ball!

“His Majesty has this decree, to attend the ball all one must have is an invitation and suitably fashionable attire. And the prince shall choose a woman from the ball to be his bride… that means ANYONE can be the queen!”

Ralph squinted as he tried to read the fancy font on the invitation, helped none whatsoever by his massive fingers obscuring his reading.  “Uh, let’s see, that’s...giving a ball...hmm...suitably fashionable attire...”

He had no idea who the prince was, and royal stuff wasn’t usually his scene.  Part of him had been grateful when Vanellope nixed the whole “princess” thing for the role of President instead.  But yeah, balls and formal parties weren’t exactly his idea of a great time.

Still...it had been a while since he’d gotten out.  Plus he still had that tux from Felix and Calhoun’s wedding.  Heck, maybe some of his friends got invitations too! “Ah, what the heck,” he muttered, pocketing the invitation.  “I’ll give it a shot!  Hope they don’t mind me going shoeless.”

"This can't get any worse, can it?" ((HELLO THERE :D))

Vanellope threw her hands in the air. This was worse than when kids put quarters covered with pocket lint into the machines.

“I dunno, all we need is a blackout, that’ll really get the gumball rollin’.” The big Arcade Grand Prix started an hour after close on Friday and continued throughout the weekend. Everyone would start at Sugar Rush and advance to other racing games in the arcade, with the grand finale back at Vanellope’s home game on the toughest track - Comet Confectionary.

The very Friday when Surge Protecter decided on his bimonthly maintenance of Game Central Station. That guy - always a pain in the pixels. “Why can’t he go bye an’ do this another day? It’s only one day, right Ralph?”

She gave a great cheer and shook his hand. “I knew ya wouldn’t let me down, old chum!” She looked out at the busy Station, with characters preparing for the   busy Friday evening ahead. “Look at ‘em - they are only twenty four hours away from the coolest race of the year!”

Of course, most of them wouldn’t be racing for long. Sure, they might make it through Mallow Fields, maybe even pick up seven passengers in Crazy Taxi. But half of them would be gone after Rally X, Roadblasters, and would take their honorable mention spots in the crowd while the remaining contestants rode the final celestial, candy-rock track.

Outdated, pixellated beeps signaled the arrival of the Pac Man Ghosts, always traveling in their little line. Vanellope waved to them. “Ole Ink, Blink, Pink…and Clyde. What’s up?”

Blinky moved straight up into the air, then to the right, repeating the motion twice more. Okay… “If you’re askin’ if the race is still on despite ole Blue Bother, well Ghoul Crew, you are in luck!” She had never bothered to learn their language.

Suddenly, the ghost’s knockback animation played - looking worried, the other ghosts quickly began moving away from them, looking more worried than usual.

Huh. They weren’t the best racers, but they had more of a chance than the whack-a-mole. “I wonder what spooked them?”

He looked out over the Station with her.  “We just have to get it past the starting line,” he added, turning to go find Surge Protector.  “Alright, wish me luck!”  He glanced back at her over his shoulder and gave a thumbs-up before walking away, on the lookout for that monotone fun-killer.

Soon enough, Ralph found just the guy he was looking for, eyes glued to his clipboard.  He seemed pretty absorbed in his duties, as per usual.  The wrecker shut his eyes, taking a quick, deep breath.  “Alright, here we go,” he muttered, eyes opening once more with a shake of his head.  He walked up to Surge, wearing as much of a smile as he could.  “Hey, Surge Protector-”

“I’m very busy right now.”  The reply came before he could even finish talking.  Ralph was almost taken aback by the suddenness of it, though he tried not to let it get to him.

“Yeah, I know- that’s what I wanted to see you about, actually,” he continued.  “See, I know this work always takes a really long time, so I was wondering if you might want some help this time.”

“I’ve always done this job by myself,” Surge responded, scribbling down something on the clipboard.  “It should stay that way.”

Jeez, this guy was stubborn.  “Oh, come on, it’s not like it’ll hurt you!  Worst case scenario, I’m not helpful at all and the work gets done just as if you were doing it yourself, right?”

The blue safety inspector glanced up from the writing surface at last, deadpan gaze meeting Ralph’s semi-hopeful one.  Silence between them for several seconds, then a sigh.  “Just don’t interfere with my work.”

A grin broke out on his face, coupled with a clap of his massive hands.  “Great!  You won’t regret this, I swear.  I’ll do my best.”

+ What do you love most about Vanellope and why?

“Hmmm...this is sort of a tough one, since a lot of the things I love about her can, occasionally, get on my nerves- like all that energy she’s got.  I’d say...probably the whole reason we’re friends is how shockingly understanding she can be.  Like when I was going on about how I needed that medal to start being treated like I mattered, she told me how she got where I was coming from since that’s what she was going through too.  Coincidence?  Eh...maybe, but then there was later when I found her in King Candy’s...”  He took a moment to roll his eyes at the oncoming play-on-words.  “...his fungeon, after I wrecked her kart and she ran away.  I gave it back to her good as new- thanks to Felix, of course- admitted I’d screwed up, and she forgave me, just like that.  I don’t even know if I’d have let someone who basically destroyed my dreams in front of me off that easily.  It’s a pretty amazing quality for such a clearly mature kid like her to have, and it’s probably it’s what I love most about her.”

+ Ever had a crush on anybody? What would be your ideal woman? We should hook you up with somebody, you gigantic eligible bachelor!

“O-oh, well, uh...”  No he wasn’t blushing what are you talking about?  “I mean, yeah, I guess you could say I’ve had a crush or two...” he muttered, scratching the back of his head.  “B-but they’ve never really gone anywhere.  And I swear I’ve talked about my ideal woman before...still not any more sure now than I was then.  Mostly all I can think of is somebody who can put up with me occasionally breaking stuff, has a certain appreciation for what I do...nothing major, really.”

“Aww, heheh...”  Ralph shuffled his feet, unable to help smiling at the positivity that had been sent to him.  “Thanks, really.  I’ve gotten over the whole “being seen as a bad guy” thing, but it really makes me feel better to hear that you think that way.”

+ What would you have done if there was no way to save Vanellope?

Oh god, he could hardly even bear to think about that.  “...Guess I wouldn’t have done anything.  They’d have pulled me out of Sugar Rush, I’d have gone back to my game, and things would’ve gone right back to how they were before.”

+ How are you with the ladyfolk?

“Well...not a whole lot of experience in that department over here.  I mean, I feel like I’d be okay at it, but all guys probably feel that way before starting out.  So, er, I’ll get back to you on that one, alright?”

+ What did you think of the appearance of Vanellope's car?

“Honestly, at first, I thought it was a total mess.  I mean, let’s face it- it’s got those sprinkles everywhere, and the mismatched candy things, and the...the chocolate sauce is uneven...  Basically I saw it and thought I’d just screwed up the whole thing for her.  But y’know, after she started going crazy over how much she loved it and we signed it, I started to think it wasn’t so bad.  Pretty nice, even.”

+ If you must say something pleasant about Gene, what would it be?

“Hmmm...something pleasant about Gene, huh?”  Ralph scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.  “Y’know, if you’d asked me a couple years back, I couldn’t have told you.  But I’ve started looking at things differently, and even if he was kind of a jerk to me before- okay, more than kind of- he just wanted to keep the other Nicelanders happy, and me being around them wasn’t making them happy at the time, so...he’s protective of the others.  And that’s pretty good of him to do.”

I'm not altogether certain that you're in the wrong about your role in FiFJ ... Having your home destroyed and all ...

“Oh, yeah...well, the stump isn’t really my home.  It’s just sorta supposed to be in the story for the game.  For me, it was always a comfy thing to keep around the dump, but I didn’t really live in it.  You’re right, though, there’s definitely a good reason behind me wrecking the building!  It’s just...the results of good reasons don’t always make people happy.”

“That’s the plan, ol’ pal o’ mine.”  She grinned up at him. “C’mon, just run him a dance for what, 30 minutes? 45 tops?” They had definitely done more dangerous things. How bad can making a stick in the mud almost blow his circuits be?

She pulled out a handful of candy; two licorice wands and a few chocolate kisses. “Look, you ask him if he needs help - you’re the taller stick, see - he says yes, that’s him right there - you tag along and bumble around a bit, you’re good at that.” The chocolate bits mimicked driving around a little track. “An’ in an instant we’ll be done!” Vanellope held out her hand to shake on it, much like their first meeting. “What’s the worst that can happen?”

And if Surge Protector found out about it and blew the plan? It would be a major pain, most definitely, but at least it would be entertaining.

He listened to her as she started to share her plan, not quite as optimistic as she was about it.  She made it sound so much easier than it was actually going to be.  The only way they’d be able to pull it off would be if Ralph was able to convince Surge Protector to let him help out.  Even if he ever needed any help, the Bad Guy was quite sure that he wouldn’t even be the last person he would go to, since he wouldn’t go to him for help at all!

“Oh, I dunno...he could outright say no and the plan won’t even get off the ground, he could shake me off in the middle of things and find out about the plan, someone could notice the race and go to him to tell him...”  He was counting the reasons off on his fingers as he listed them.  Still, he knew he was being a bit too pessimistic.  Finally he dropped his hands and sighed, reaching out to shake her much tinier one.  “Fine, I’ll see if I can distract Surge long enough for you to get a race in.”

"Hello! I'm calling from the Stinky Butts Society. It is my honor to announce that you have been selected to receive the Stinkiest Butt award! Congratulations!"

“Wha- hey!”  Ralph scowled for a moment, not exactly angry at whoever was on the other end of the line, but not very appreciative of the comment nonetheless.  “Who is this?  How’d you get my number?”  Just then he was struck by a rather easy conclusion.  He sighed deeply, unable to help the smile pulling at the corner of his lips before returning the phone to his ear.  “Vanellope put you up to this, didn’t she?”

Vanellope couldn’t quite remember what Ole Surge did during his checkups. As the de facto leader in her game, she received the report after he came in and inspected - the pile of them unread on her desk - but what did he really do? After all, there was only one of him….

“Dude’s gotta have a schedule. Stickler like that, he probably does -” Maybe everyone can just be one step ahead of him? 

As she thought the idea through, she pointed to the games that surrounded her and Ralph in the busy Station. “Say he starts w’ Asteroids, then goes to Bubble Blubble - dependin’ on how long it takes, we might be able to squeak out at least one race…if we had a distraction.”

“Oh yeah, he’s definitely got a schedule,” Ralph responded, giving a shrug.  “Never really took the time to learn it, but...hey, actually, I can sorta remember how things go!  I guess I kinda picked it up without even thinking about it.”  It’d take a bit of concentration, but Ralph could slowly remember the order of Surge’s routine maintenance coming back to him.

Just then the adorable princess-president shed a bit of light on why they might need to know the schedule.  He caught the idea of what she was saying immediately, giving a quick, good-natured roll of his eyes before looking down to her again.  “And lemme guess- you want me to be the distraction.”

Finally, the parrot managed to pull his head out from the stack of bricks his body had smashed into. Shaking his head, and spitting out an entire brick, Iago dropped into a messy sitting position, and practically exploded with deep, indignant rage. "I... I JUST GOT CATAPULTED FIFTY FEET INTO THE SIDE OF A BUNCHA BRICKS. If I wasn't an "Angry Bird" before, I sure as heck am now!" Realizing suddenly that he was not alone, he shot a glare at the man looming nearby. "What're YOU lookin' at...!?"

Well, this was definitely unexpected.  Here Ralph was just heading back to his shack when some red blur appeared from out of nowhere and crashed right into the bricks that made up the dump!  He hurried on over to find this loudmouthed little bird, clearly unhappy with the situation he just found himself in.  Just then he found himself being addressed by him- rather rudely, actually.  “The one who showed up all of a sudden and smashed headfirst into a mountain of bricks.  Sorry for being a bit concerned,” he responded with a bit of a scowl.  He didn’t recognize the bird, so he must’ve been new- he’d remember someone like this guy, based on the first impression he made.  “Who are you, anyway?”

“Yeah…we probably shouldn’t keep talking about that kind of stuff, kid.  We’re just gonna end up jinxing it.”  Ralph knew how much Vanellope had been looking forward to the Grand Prix- she’d hardly been talking about anything else for so long- so having it get delayed must’ve really been getting to her.  Hopefully the maintenance’d be over soon, but given how methodical Surge Protector was with that stuff, he doubted it.

“Hey, I know he could just as easily put the whole thing off, and so does he,” the wrecker answered.  “But in the thirty years I’ve known that guy I’ve never seen him give up his routine for anything- not even one time.  Wish I could help, but I don’t think there’s anything in the arcade that’d get Surge Protector to ease up for once.”
