If she calls
If she makes you laugh with videos
If she stops you from having an immediate breakdown
If she brings you up
If she holds you
If she sees your beauty
If she brings you back to life when you feel dead inside
If she shamelessly introduces you
If she values your opinion
If she loves you

The best thing about seeing previously marginalized groups claim their own space in pop culture is it often ends up showing — in the most compelling ways — how alike we all really are.
That’s my biggest takeaway from Pose, FX’s crackling new Sunday night series about drag ball culture in New York during the late 1980s. On one level, the show is a detailed exploration of how drag queens, some of whom are transgender, created their own percolating club scene when they weren’t welcome anywhere else. It’s a world filled with fashion show-style competitions, or balls, where competitors dress according to a given category and walk before a panel of judges who evaluate them on style, appearance, dance skills and authenticity.
