Numbers 21:4-9 We see the righteous judgment God brought upon God's people for murmuring. He sent fiery serpents among them, which bit or stung many to death. It is to be feared that they would not have owned the sin, if they had not felt the smart; but they were brought to repentance under the rod. And God made a wonderful provision for their relief. The Jews themselves say it was not the sight of the brazen serpent that cured; but in looking up to it, they looked up to God as the Lord that healed them. There was much gospel in this. Our Savior declared that as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of man must be lifted up, that whoever believes and is baptized, they would not perish. Compare their disease and ours. Sin bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder. Compare the application of their remedy and ours. Jon 1:4-7 Jonah was on the run, set to avoiding God and the tasks he was called to as a prophet. God sent a pursuer after Jonah- a mighty tempest. Sin brings storms and tempests into the soul, into the family, into churches and nations; it is a disquieting, disturbing thing. These storms force us to deal with the very depths of our sinfulness, that in comfort, we are oblivious to or even avoid. Because of God's great love, we are not consumed (Lamentations 3.22) and he lovingly provides OPPORTUNITIES for metanoia....mind change....repentance. For Jonah, it was a great storm, a great fish, and some great vomit....(none of which I'd call "opportunities", lol)...each provided a way out from the sin Jonah was hiding in. God always provides those opportunities for me as well. There's no use hiding, he will find me. There's no use trying to deny the truth or play stupid, for he is able to bring all things out into the light because he loves me and wants me to be more and more equipped to reflect his glory in this life. Are you on the run? Are you painfully oblivious? What opportunities is God providing right now for you?
