âThat much happening, huh?â he joked. âI canât really even imagine what youâd be like really drunk.â
âI will drink to that,â he said, raising a glass before downing most of its contents. âToo good, Iâm starting to think. You skip work one Monday morning and suddenly itâs as though the world is endinâ.â Nash chuckled. âYeah, well, I think the past few years it has taken over my life. But hopefully that will change.â Ivy was adorable, and he couldnât help but grin when she stopped herself from saying something mean about his boss. He fought the urge to tease her, but the smile on his face still gave him away.
âHearing about your life is like watching an episode of Little House on the Prairie.â It sounded somewhat peaceful though, and Nash wondered if it was easier to live like his friend, to be more focused on the world as it existed at your fingertips than such a wider scope. âBerty sounds like he takes after me.â He really enjoyed listening to Ivy talk about these things. âA garden and flowers? You have been keepinâ busy.â
Nash scrunched his nose at her. âI wasnât gonna say that. Honestly, I was thinking how kind of jealous I am of your life, actually.â Maybe his last conversation with Mariah was more truthful than he realized â maybe he was headed for a mid-life crisis. That would explain a lot of his behavior as of late. His eyes widened at her admission. âYou went skinny dipping? Okay, but the question of the hour â alone, or did you have guests?â he asked with a lifted brow.
Sighing, he took another drink, not prepared to turn the conversation back to himself. âYouâre too young to understand,â he mused jokingly. âI always thought being a lifetime bachelor would keep me young, but the more I see everyone my age settlinâ down, the more I just feel like Iâm watching my life pass me by alone, yâknow? I have great friends and Iâm always stayinâ busy, but I donât know.â He shrugged, taking a drink. âAnd thatâs why Iâm more interested in your life,â he laughed.
âI feel like drunk Ivy is what most people want sober Ivy to be,â she told him with a nod as she took a sip of her wine, âI donât overthink, and I am a lot braver.â
Ivy raised her glass, only downing half of her drink. âAnd if it was endinâ, thatâs on them,â she shrugged her shoulder, âIs that so? How come? â She noticed the grin on his face, waiting for him to say something. She can tell he wanted to, but nothing was said. That didnât change her mind from making a face at him. As if that was going to stop him from grinning.
âIâve never heard of that show, Iâm going to assume itâs a good show? â she raised an eyebrow. She made a mental note for herself to check that show out when she can. Or to look up what the show was about. What he said next made her laugh, causing her to cover her mouth with her free hand. âHe does,â she shook her head, âalways getting himself into trouble! But heâs so small and cute,â she pouted. The goat definitely believed he was the one in charge of the place with the way he prances around the farm. âWell, Iâve been told I needed to give myself some self-care, so this garden is going to be it. I just hope it works,â especially her busy schedule.Â
âHow come? â honestly, she was not expecting him to say that. Nash being jealous of her life? Ivy does not hate her life, but thereâs a part of her that feels stuck. This was not where she imagined herself to be at this point in her life. She saw herself further ahead, already having a candy store, and be settled down. Yeah, sheâs only twenty-six, but since she was young, she always assumed she had to have everything together by her mid-twenties.
âI had guests, but when they heard someone coming, they ran and accidentally took my clothes. So, that was horrifying.â
âOh, try me,â she scrunched up her nose. Ivy listened to him speak, taking everything he said in. His last comment made her laugh. He was trying to do the same she was doing by changing the topic, so they didnât have to talk about their life. âYou donât have to be a lifetime bachelor to keep yourself young. Sure, I get why it would give off that vibe since the majority of guys in their twenties have that lifestyle. But,â she pressed her lips together, âit doesnât make you stay young, as you get older. It just makes it cringy. And I say this with all the love in my heart.â Ivy repositioned herself before taking a sip of her wine. âWhat keeps you young is your child-like spirit. No matter how old you are, that spirit will keep you young. Look at us, we are ten years apart, but anyone would think youâre the twenty-six-year-old and Iâm the thirty-six-year-old, and itâs definitely not because of the lifetime bachelor lifestyle. And I get the whole watching my life pass me by, I do.âÂ
She licked her lips as she gave herself a moment to collect her thoughts before wording them. âThereâs nothing bad with wanting to settle down or wanting more than what you have now. But it has to be something you want, not something you think you should have because everyone else your age is doing it. The whole catch-up game can be addicting, but I donât want you to get yourself into something you thought you want because of everyone else. And then find out later that you didnât, and you canât take it back.â She let a moment a silent fall between before she looked over at him, âI just word vomit, sorry,â she grimaced before chuckling, âwell, we can continue talking about Barty. But talking this out ain't that bad either, especially if can help in some way.â
