Hmmm well I will put the childhood hcs first, then the adult Nagato/Pain hcs.
Nagato liked to sing a lot as a child, but he’s not very good at it. Not that he cares. You go, Nagato!
Nagato used to be somewhat disappointed with his life. He wished something big would happen to him. Then his parents were killed, and he regretted those past thoughts ever since. And sadly he ended up at the opposite end of the spectrum, weighing a lot of his personality on the sole fact that he’s special, he’s big, he’s god.
Though Nagato was always outwardly kind to everyone he met as a child, it took a lot to earn his respect. Now, it is even harder.
Nagato had acne on his forehead as a teenager, but nobody ever knew.
When Nagato was in school, kids often asked him if he was feeling ok, since he is so pale. He would always grin sheepishly and say “yes”
Nagato could tell that Yahiko and Konan liked each other way before either of them did.
He was always sensitive about his personality. He got hurt whenever people brought up his introverted nature. As he aged, he grew less timid. Kind of like being afraid of answering the phone as a kid, but totally owning it when you are an adult.
(Now getting into older Nagato/Pain hcs) He loves politics. Political nerd. Also loves philosophy and theology.
He uses a Pain body as much as possible, because he can forget his bad health and trauma.
He is also much more confident as Pain, and Konan almost forgets it’s the same person. He is also more demanding as Pain.
Nagato sometimes loses himself in Pain, and forgets who he is. Like being in a virtual reality game all the time.
Pain pays his ninja very well. He cares little about his own fortune, and wants to share success with his people. In this area, he has not lost sight of his original goal. He pays close attention to how Ame is run, with Konan’s help.
He doesn’t really realize it, but he guilt trips Konan. He regrets it, but feels this is irreparable. How could he ever even begin to apologize.
He has trouble sleeping, and will often wander around Ame as himself. This is when he grounds himself with the reality of his sins, and weighs on his life. He is a private person.
He likes animals, so he picks up exotic summon animals as he discovers them.
He loves dogs most of all! Very exciting!
Konan is his care-taker but Nagato dislikes being taken care of quite a lot, his self-destructive behavior is his own, his burden, and he hates that he has to put that on Konan of all people.
He forgets to take care of himself, and Konan is like “please eat something”.
He takes ice baths to soothe the pain he feels in day to day life.
He is a big reader in general. Will reference books often, and is a master of quotes.
Since he sings and likes poetry you’d be surprised to see that he’s actually a cheesy romantic (love poems).
He is very responsible and independent. And after his incident, he can no longer be as independent as he was. This frustrates him greatly.
His foreign politics are downright brutal, but he will do anything for his own people.
He has a long fuse when it comes to the Akatsuki’s antics and is entertained when they don’t get along. He is a bit of a troll, and will sometimes mess with them.
Nagato admires Itachi. He thinks they are like-minded people.
He also respects Kakuzu and Sasori, despite some of their ideology differences.
He thinks Deidara is very eager and finds him to be funny.
Pain respects his Akatsuki members as ninja. But he distances himself from them emotionally. He is more emotionally distant as Pain than as Nagato. (He mourns Deidara’s death in private). This is because Pain is God.
Nagato is not God. Nagato is a weak, frail human who could not save his own friend. Pain is everything he wants to be. Pain is perfect.
