Iāll Always Be There
āI canāt believe weāre this close to graduating.ā Riley exclaims, applying an extra coat of lip gloss in front of the full length mirror on the back of Mayaās door in her room.
āHopefully it can come quicker, these heels are killing my feet.ā She winced as she walked over to sit in the chair beside her best-friend, who began rambling on whether or not her white prom dress was over the top or not that impressive. This had to be the third time this week.
Maya didnāt mind prom, but she wished that it couldāve been how they always imagined it as kids. Not being so down about not having dates, and instead enjoying each-otherās company and heading back to Rileyās house to watch an episode of Gossip Girls, with a carton of ice cream until their eyes close. But she ended up being the only one left to herself tonight.
āDonāt be so down, Maya. You know Lucas doesnāt mind me dancing with you for a bit, weāre going to have fun, right?ā
She felt like openly expressing her true feelings, but the last thing she wanted to be was the party pooper for everyoneās night.
āOf course we will.ā
They shared a hug, when suddenly there was a knock on the door.
āCome in!ā Riley calls out.
The door opened and in walked the guys, all dressed up for the special occasion. Lucas was wearing a simple black tux, Zay in the same color with a dark blue vest underneath, and Farkle in a black velvet jacket.
Maya stood frozen as she caught sight of Farkle, not used to seeing him all made up. It was usually his graphic tees she was used to seeing all time, and she thought he wouldāve went out of the box this time. But his hair was perfectly styled and it made him look sorta...cute.
āYou finally made it.ā Riley beams, stepping right into Lucasās arms.
Maya smiled at the couple and stood off to the side, but didnāt miss Farkle making his way to her.
āYou look amazing.ā He tells her.
She immediately looked down at her black, strapless gown and back at him.
āYou really think so? My mom picked it out and figured itāll fit m-ā
āYou wouldāve look amazing regardless of whatever you decide to wear.ā
His words caused her to pause, her cheeks starting to grow hot and she noticed that his were becoming a flush red color. What was exactly going on here?
āAt least you think I look nice, it makes me feel a bit better about not having a date.ā She nervously laughs, rubbing her arm.
Farkle stared at him shock.
āNo one asked you?ā
Maya shakes her head. āNope.ā
āWell, you know Smackle and I decided to be friends, so I guess I never had a date either.ā
She felt bad that Farkle has been on his own a couple of months. Him and Smackle were inseparable, making it hard to believe that made the decision to give each-other much needed space. He didnāt think nothing was wrong, but he cared about Smackle and valued his friendship with her over everything else.
A few couple of weeks in, and everyone would include Farkle in their hangouts. But most of the time, Maya finds herself with him. They would have milkshakes during test weeks, eat lunch together or even just hangout at her place just because. He held a place dear in her heart.
āI guess weāre both pretty much alone tonight.ā She sighs.
āNot necessarily,ā He turned to her with his hand out, as she looked on in confusion. āIām used to having you as a partner in crime, a prom date doesnāt sound so bad either.ā
Mayaās lips broke out into a smile, holding her hand up in fondness as she took his. They instantly intertwined and it almost took her breath away, her eyes wandering down to stare at it as Farkle looked at her in admiration.
āThis feels...ā She starts to say, unable to find words.
āNice?ā He finishes for her.
She didnāt have to respond when she heard their friends āAwwingā from the other side of the room.
āOh shut up.ā Maya says jokingly.
āIām definitely taking pictures of this.ā Zay says, holding his camera up to snap one, until Riley blocked the lenses.
āLet them be, letās go you guys.ā
They all started to leave the room, Maya and Farkle following behind.
āThank you, Farkle.ā
āIāll always be there for you, not matter what it is...you know that.ā
Yeah...she definitely did.
