things you should totes not view as positive portrayals of love/romance:
the great gatsby
romeo & juliet
the phantom of the opera
snape
50 shades of grey
Ted Mosby’s pursuit of Robin from How I Met Your Mother Ross Geller’s obsession with Rachel Green on Friends
TWILIGHT
agree with everything but snape. his love was so pure
If you mean by pure, obsessive then sure. “Pure.”
The romanticism of Snape’s “love” for Lily has been a big problem for HP. Its amazing how one awful, awful man somehow becomes romantic and tragic because he carries an unhealthy torch for his childhood crush.
Think about it. A racist, classist kid falls in love with his childhood friend. He hangs out with other likeminded people, even becoming a known death eater, and uses a racial slur against his “one true love”. He tries to dictate to her to stay away from other people out of jealousy, treats her sister with disdain, and is called out by Dumbledore for being willing to let several people die so long as she’s alive. He begged the Dark Lord to have her/save her. Then - instead of doing any healthy growing or moving on - proceeds to take his emotional issues out on children. Even if we want to call this love, its deeply rooted in obsession and possession, which is toxic.
Also, add Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre to the list. While they’re classics, they do have some pretty messed up and toxic relationships. Some people think Wuthering Heights is a deeply romantic story but dear lord…
Wow. JVN spoke his truth about being abused by an older boy at his church, filling his emotional void with junk food and then drugs (meth and coke) and sex, selling his body to make money cuz he was too embarrassed to ask his mom for help, flunking out of college, relapsing after rehab twice, and finding out at 25 that he was HIV positive. His journey’s been harrowing and yet he seems like such a radiant and positive person. He’s even braver than any of us realized.
YOU’RE NEVER TOO BROKEN TO BE FIXED.
