Clark could do little more than consider the man with upturned brows, cogs turning as he struggled to remember someone who’d just implied a second meeting. Northman? Who the fuck was that? What the hell had he been mistaken for now?
"Been called a lot of things, lemme tell ya. Never heard that one though.”
He let his shoulders relax just a little, an attempt at a show of a little confidence. When you were low on the metaphorical hierarchy, you tended to learn how to present yourself as more than you actually were. It was a survival tactic in itself.
He’d considered playing it up, pretending to be whoever the hell this man was on about—but decided that’d probably be dangerous and would just end up pissing the accompanying party off.
"I honestly have no idea who you are. I don’t think we’ve ever met before. I mean, it’s possible but uh—that’s not my name.”
Russell's face contorted into a scowl at Clark's words. Was Northman really so foolish to believe so simple a ploy would work on his old enemy? No... Northman was too clever for that, and the Viking vampire would have relished the opportunity to confront Russell again. Amnesia perhaps? Russell had heard of several witches' spells that could inflict amnesia on vampires. Still, the ancient vampire stood a better chance of getting answers by prying for them.
"Let's say for argument's sake that you're not Eric Northman," Russell replied. "Who are you?"
