I really really like how Obssession emphasises the difference in the two Nikki’s by the fundamentally different ways they feel about bear.

Nikki liked bear a lot but did not love him. Not in the way he wanted her too.

She compared him to a brother. She saw him as basically family. She knew him really well and deeply cared about him as an individual.

But just not in the way bear actually cared about. There wasn’t romantic love there. She didn’t need him.

Meanwhile Freaky Nikki loves bear but she does not like him. Because he didn’t create her to like him.

She deeply deeply romantically loves him to an extreme and codependent level. She needs him to function because it’s her purpose. Her reason to even be alive. Her one job is to love bear and make him happy no matter what.

But she doesn’t actually like, know or care about him as a person. His unique quirks and interests are a box to tick at the best and an obstacle to completing her goal at worst. He ends up frustrating her because he’s not letting her just do what he made her for.

She can’t even say she likes him. Because she doesn’t. She only loves him and that’s not the same thing.

In that she mirrors how he sees the original Nikki. He loved her but he didn’t like her enough not to ruin her life. Just like Freaky Nikki doesn’t like him enough to not ruin his.

Quick thought of Obsession (2026). I don’t know how this relates to the themes of the movie:

Bear lives in his grandmother’s house. Nothing in that house is his. A lot of times, directors and set designers will litter the background with details that point to the true nature of the character. The fact that none of those things are his means we have very little insight on his personality and who he was before the events of the movie.

Secondly, when wish!Nicky tells him “I haven’t really asked you what your dreams are” he has a joke answer about being a food critic that she runs with because truly neither her nor us are ever given a real answer as to what he’s interested in, what he wants to be. Bear is almost a blank slate with no real interests apart from Nicky (who’s obsessed now??)

Third, he uses AI. IMO anyone generating images with AI has no personality anyway.

How fucking horrifying it was to watch Nikki moan so much acting like she was loving the sex so much. But she's just lifeless completely and he can't even tell. Doesn't even look. Because it doesn't matter if she's really there he just wants her body, the sound of her pleasure boosting his ego like he's doing a good job. Too many women know that feeling.

And all after she had such an awful meltdown in the restaurant and it cuts to him just trying to fuck out his stress. Act like it didn't happen. Distract himself with what he always wanted which was just the idea of her enjoying it whether or not she actually did

one thing abt bear as a character that feels So crucial is the fact that its mentioned early on that his apartment is actually his grandmothers who passed away some unspecified amount of time ago and he’s moved in (notice the furniture and decor not looking like that of a young guy)

he comes home to find his cat (his grandma’s cat??) dead because it got into his grandma’s medication which he still has for some reason, so he cleans up the vomit and the corpse (in a bin bag, not a burial despite supposedly loving that cat SO much), and then….. puts the medicine back in the cabinet???

and then he sobs about this entirely preventable thing that HE could have avoided had he just taken any kind of initiative and yknow, gotten rid of the incredibly dangerous pills for a dead woman being kept in a cabinet that doesnt close properly

because if he Had actually cared about that cat, he wouldn’t have kept that stuff lying around at all, and he wouldn’t have unceremoniously dumped its body in a bin bag outside and then act like a victim when his own actions come to bite him

and That is what his character is about

Was thinking about how fitting it is that Bear wants to be a food critic while Nikki wants to be a writer.

He wants to complain about the creations of someone else, adding nothing but despair to their lives, refusing to contribute anything helpful or new.

She wants to create something original but is stuck in an imitation of herself, forced to reenact a plot she hates.

thibking about Obsession (2026) and I also kind of feel bad for Wish Nikki...like of course what she did to Real Nikki, Sarah and Ian are awful but it doesn't seem like she had much control over herself either. Whatever she was, she was brought into existence to love Bear and only Bear more than anything else in the world, that's what he asked for. It's like she doesn't understand human connection or behavior but she knows all she wants, no needs, is to get Bear to love her back, and she can't even do that right. She seems entirely miserable throughout the film except for when Bear is good to her and that's because she's quite literally nothing without him. When you consider that without Bear she spent his entire work shift standing there unmoving waiting for him it makes sense she didn't want him to leave and went through the extremes of taping up the door to stop him. She has nothing else, nobody else, hell even Nikki's so called friends all seem to think there is something wrong with her and they don't try to help her they try to help Bear instead. Maybe they did try to talk to her and she wouldn't listen or accept any help, why? She can't do anything but want to be with Bear, no matter what. No matter how much it hurts her and everyone around her. Imagine that being your whole existence...horrifying!!!

*Minor Spoilers for Obsession 2026*

So I did go see Obsession again last night and made sure to pay extra attention to Bear’s little opening monologue when he’s practicing his love confession to Nikki.

Bear doesn’t say a single thing about Nikki as a person in his speech. He doesn’t say that he loves her kindness and how she cares for others, he doesn’t talk about how he loves her creativity or care-free spirit, he doesn’t talk about what he likes about her.

He talks about nice things she’s done for him. He talks about what she means to him. He talks about her being there for him, and how he likes how she’s treated him.

And while I won’t pretend that those things aren’t important, they are the only things Bear mentions in his big vulnerable romantic speech.

Bear’s “confession” tells us literally nothing about Nikki other than that she’s been nice to Bear in the past.

But in a subtle way, his “love confession” tells us a LOT about Bear and his actual feelings for Nikki.

He likes that she’s been nice to him. That’s it.

He likes that she’s been nice to him, and whether it was an unconscious process or not, Bear has responded to Nikki’s being nice to him by becoming obsessed and infatuated with her.

To the point that, once he’s (albeit initially unwittingly) in a position of power over her, he completely disregards her personhood and begins to feel entitled to her and her body.

That’s another layer to Obsession that I find absolutely chilling. That so often just being nice or polite to someone won’t lead to them showing you that same kindness in return, but will instead lead them to feeling entitled to you.

Bear saying that Nikki would "hate" citrine. Citrine, which is sunshine and remarkable healing. Citrine, which supports emotional well-being, stimulates clarity, and promotes creativity. A crystal which is believed to dispel negative energies. To replace them with joy and optimism. Balance. Harmony. Vitality. Everything he refused to give her.

One thing about Obsession (2026) that I enjoyed was that it almost asks you to feel empathy for the entity possessing Nikki as well as the real one. Like, obviously the things she's doing are horrific and fucked up, but I think the scene where Bear is asking her to "just be Nikki!" and she eventually just desperatly screams "I can't be Nikki!" does a really good job of showcasing the entity's inner feelings. She's been created with the sole purpose of loving this guy more than anyone else but no matter how perfect it is or how much he claims to love her, its not her that he loves, its Nikki. And any time she stops pretending to be Nikki, he reacts (albeit rightfully) with disgust and horror. She can't be Nikki because Nikki would never love Bear, and so Bear will never love her.

I see you, Rancilda-defenders. I love you, Rancilda-defenders.

But I just need to say how cool it is that it's not part of Ellas story to forgive her. A lot of people have pointed out the unapologetic revenge story but I need to put emphasis on this point. Rancilda is someone you could expect a hero to forgive. She was just following her mothers orders. She's a child. She stands up for herself in the end.

But she's not forgiven, and I love that. You can headcanon that she survives, and lives happily ever after under her favorite bridge. I do like that, too.

But it's not part of Ella's journey to forgive. She doesn't have to forgive this troll, who's wearing the skin of her murdered friend, who bullied and threatened her for what's possibly years, who held her down as her feet were sawed off, who laughed when she died.

I just think that's crucial. I just think that's awesome. Ella could have forgiven her. But it's not required of her. Her being a hero has nothing to do with her forgiving her abuse. I like that.

My favorite thing about Cinderella’s Castle is how unapologetic it is about revenge as a theme. We’ve all seen story after story about the pitfalls of revenge where characters are chastised for their anger and punished by the narrative. I love how, when asked what she truly wants Ella isn’t allowed to shy away from her feelings, no matter how ugly they might be. There’s something powerful about an eldritch god seeing someone who is actively being hurt and saying “you deserve the chance to fight for yourself and for those who have been taken from you”
