Thinking about Obsession again!!

I think one of the reasons Bear goes from liking Nikki to liking Sarah is that Bear wants someone to LIKE him. As in, have a CRUSH on him.

He hears that Sarah likes him at first, but she’s not the girl he likes. Nikki is. He wants Nikki to have a crush on him, to pine for him. He wants to be kinda unattainable to her. The idea of her being obsessed with him is inherently one-sided because it puts Bear in the position of power over her.

When Nikki starts acting weird and becoming more of a burden than a servant to Bear, he starts liking Sarah. He LOVES the idea, I think, that Sarah doesn’t know him and likes him. He wants to be desired, for someone to not know what a pathetic loser he is and want him. This is a kind of elementary-school-thinking that I think everyone who experiences romantic desire feels at some point, but Bear has never done any type of self-reflection to grow from this thinking. He’s as mature as a child trying to navigate something so much more important than he could ever realize.

If he ever wanted to pursue something real with Nikki, he would have figured out a way to get her to her father so she could visit him or something. He would try to build permanent bonds. He doesn’t want that, though. He wants a surface level girlfriend after wishing for complete devotion.

Just makes me mad thinking about how dumb he is and how he’s so completely incapable of being in a real, adult relationship.
