—“I’M SORRY FOR RUNNING OFF LIKE THAT,” you bite your lip as you awkwardly slip back into your seat, “it’s not what—um, i just panicked.”
“it’s fine,” dennis looks down at his plate for a moment as if psyching himself up to ask his next question, “that was him? um, matt?”
you nod, “that’s the first time he’s messaged me in months. it’s just this patient of mine from when i was in oregon was asking about me, that’s all.”
dennis nods back, looking slightly appeased but still shy, “right, yeah. it’s fine, and you’re allowed to still be friends with him anyway, obviously.”
you lean forward, making eye contact so intense you feel your insides turn to jelly, and you watch him swallow thickly.
“we don’t even talk, denny. and i—i’d tell you if we did,” dennis watches you frown, fiddling with your fingers, “look, if i’m totally honest matt was, like really important to me, and he was my best friend before we dated. i do miss his friendship, and i’d like to be able to not feel weird about him messaging and just text back like it’s nothing. we’re not together now, that’s all in the past. but i want you to know that i really really mean it when i say i like you, and that this changes nothing.”
dennis leans closer again, pressing a kiss to your temple, “i trust that, sunny. it’s okay. this is fresh and new and i don’t resent you for being happy to hear from him, either. we can keep taking this slow. hey, you said he grew up on a farm in the midwest - maybe we’d be friends?”
you feel warmth bloom from the spot his lips met your face, and you lift a hand up to rest on it as he smiles warmly across at you.
“that’s—you’re being so understanding,” you feel like crying now, overwhelmed by his kindness, “i think you’d really like each other, yeah. sorry, denny, that was a shit way to end our first kinda sorta date, wasn’t it?”
“end?” he smirks, waving down the waiter (in a way that totally so does not at all make you swoon at his sexy if not uncharacteristic nonchalantness), “we’ve got a whole afternoon ahead of us, pretty girl.”
in this part… dennis embarrasses himself in front of you. luckily for him, you’re too into him to care.

—“UH DENNY, I GOT YOU SOME NAPKINS,” dennis looks up from his phone to see a smirk on your face, and suddenly he wants the ground to swallow him up even more.
your teasing expression falters a little when you see the panic on his face, “it’s fine, really. i’ve done much stupider things drunk. besides, i figured it’d be me drunkenly getting way too flustered in front of you and not the other way around tonight.”
he swears the giggle you make is the sweetest sound he’s ever heard and barely catches the fact you implied that, for whatever reason, he was apparently capable of making you flustered.
“i’m so sorry, i promise i’m not normally this clumsy on a night out,” he shakes his head, taking the napkins from you and beginning to awkwardly swipe at the stain on his shirt, “thanks for getting these, you’re a life saver.”
you’re trying hard — like, really hard — not to look at the way the shirt clings to the abs you didn’t know he had, and for a moment you don’t say anything.
you don’t see trinity and victoria a few meters away giggling at the exchange (“she’s practically drooling” “they’re so obvious it’s almost adorable”)
“oh—yeah no problem, anything for you,” okay, the wine has clearly gotten to you, “i mean… wait no yeah actually, unfortunately i do mean what i just said.”
your giggle is back now, and it instils a little confidence in dennis too as he raises an eyebrow, “unfortunately?”
“unfortunately in the oh-no-why-do-i-have-a-crush-on-a-coworker way, not in the sense that it’s unfortunate it’s you,” you shrug, realising there’s no going back and noticing your heart rate pick up exponentially.
“a crush?”
“i mean, duh,” you bite your lip and feel his eyes linger on the action, “have you really not noticed that that’s what all the girls’ teasing has been about? you?”
“you’re joking?”
you notice his chest visibly deflate with relief, his lips pressed together like he can’t believe his own stupidity in not noticing his crush was reciprocated.
“no i’m not joking, denny,” you take a step closer and he’s grateful for your warmth as the cold beer stained shirt clings to his stomach, “i kinda—well—yeah, i like you.”
now his chest puffs out, proud, “oh well that’s good, because i like you too. quite a lot, actually. and i can’t believe it took me covering myself in shitty beer for this conversation to happen. like what the hell?”
“to be fair, i can believe it,” you laugh, “we’re so dumb and i thought i should ignore how i feel so have been pretending it’s not obvious. but i’m glad you spilled your drink — on which note, where have you been hiding those abs? sorry, oh my god. uh, anyway, yeah. i like you.”
saying it out loud again and knowing he feels the same makes your heart feel fuzzy, and you think it’s going to leap out of your chest when he dips his head so that your noses are practically touching and lets out a low chuckle.
“can i kiss you?”
you think you should be embarrassed by the way you whimper out a “please”, but the second his lips touch yours, everything else melts away.
you know your texts will be a mess when you wake up, but for now… all you care about is dennis whitaker and how good of a kisser he is.
