zine fests can be overstimulating and prep always means late nights and I always crash a lil after but I think I often forget about the really good moments that make me happy during the fest.
Like: watching someone genuinely engage with my work or read through a comic of mine for the first time. Watching them hit certain beats and go through the journey you invited them on. I love to see people's reactions. Sometimes they are caught by surprise, sometimes they feel seen and understood, And the most conflicting one is when they get sad. (I’m like yes, I wanted it to be sad but now you’re sad here in front of me and I feel guilty for inflicting feelings onto you!) But all these moments are little moments of connection that I really appreciate, even if they are short by nature.
sharing excitement and enthusiasm and small short bursts of connection with strangers is good and healing actually. there are people out there who think and feel and love and live like you do, and finding those people and connecting with them feels so good. No matter how niche you think you are, there will be someone out there who feels exactly the way you do. You are never alone. We overlap with people we never expect sometimes. I heard someone yell, “you’re singing the song of my soul!” At a fellow tabling artist once. There’s always something for somebody.
Getting blacklisted from trading with local fae because you've been paying for their favours with stuff like childhood dreams and the memory of your mother's smile, trading their goods for what would have otherwise been absurdly highball prices, but then they found out that the things you've given them in return are worthless because they mean nothing to you. After going no-contact with your family you just wanted to get fucking rid of all of the things that are attached to them, and if you could, you'd give your memories of them away for free on craiglist.
Normalize starting over & letting someone else love you correctly
Intimacy is not just experienced through sex. It's crying together. It's whispering late at night. It's talking about growing up and what used to scare you. It's going places that remind you of your childhood. It's feeling each other without touching. It's exchanging energy.

something about... miss retro's being a beloved part of hatchetfield but miss holloway herself not feeling any emotional connection to the town. she cares about the people she helps, of course, but she doesn't have roots. she'd leave in an instant if it wasn't for one particular person, drawing her back in.
and duke, hatchetfield native, with roots so deep he can't even fathom leaving. he loves everyone he meets and they love him back. in a town where nearly everyone is at least a little bit of an asshole (even miss holloway), duke is overwhelmingly kind and openhearted.
so holloway asks him run away with me and he simply can't.
why are you so sad?

in english we say: "I love you."
but in poetry we say: "I see you everywhere, in the stars, in the river, to me you're everything that exists; the reality of everything."
